one of the great strengths of this album that i picked up on more w/ some distance is how seamlessly so many major stars are folded into the album... it's not so much that they disappear but it's almost at times if like the entire black pop music community has come together to express its heartache at once

^^^ said that in my review. The thing is like an updated Motown revue.

Also, Timberlake is the last thing I remember about "Shades." What lingers is the insinuating, slinky groove and mood.

also
what you gonna dowhat you gonna do when i'm perfect for yougirl watch how it's gonna drive you crazyand love's gonna turn you up babygirl watch how it's gonna drive you crazy
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhWHAT YOU GONNA DO WHEN I'M PERFECT FOR YOU
etc.
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago) link
^^^ that's the best part of "Shades", & the way it transitions into the Timberlake part
― Euler, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:50 (twelve years ago) link
to me its the vocals on the chorus... or whichever part it is where they sing "whatchu gonna do when i'm perfect for you?"... the vocals on that are great, the way they're layered so thick, it plays perfectly with the "hate you now" and "your love"

Last slew of posts have all been very much OTM.

I'll spend the rest of my life defending this album to skeptics.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:00 (twelve years ago) link
i might be totally wrong about this, but it sounds to me like the harmonies on the chorus are layered in a way that is slightly out of sync, which has this great, disorienting effect.
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:02 (twelve years ago) link
i assume it's bilal & fauntelroy doing those parts?
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:05 (twelve years ago) link
I mean, if "Yesterday" was my favourite song I'd feel a bit weird promoting it for the same reason, but nor do I automatically vomit in my mouth every time I hear the same vocalist who I loved on "Forever" and "With You" and "Superhuman" and "Run It" and "Yo" and...
It certainly helps that I mostly hated Chris Brown before he beat up Rihanna; "Run It" and "No Air" was the only songs of his I actually liked before he plopped himself on my personal boycott list.

man i was listening to this album (or more specifically my LTTP/LOVElove vs. HATElove/A Telltale Heart mega playlist) all day today and marveling at these songs all over again, fun to come home and see you guys were all talking about it at the same time.
fwiw k3v the wayne & justin parts of "shades" (especially wayne) are probably my least favorite parts of the entire album and the rest of the song is probably my favorite, and i've made my peace w/ that and consider the song great in spite of its faults
― lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:38 (twelve years ago) link
lex has pointed this out but despite the fact that I've probably racked up a cumulatie of 30-50+ plays on each track, each song just still sounds so fresh and nice and unique

It's been a long time coming!
[Love that there is another secret reference to moar soul classics embedded in the lyrics. Sam Cooke what!]

I think what I really want to know is when Diddy actually learned how to rap
I mean, it's been building for a good long while now but I think he is legit good album this album, not just "good for Diddy"
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:17 (twelve years ago) link
He doesn't rise above "okay" imo, even on "Looking For Love," but that's a personal best.
He sinks again on the new Ross mixtape, alas.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:19 (twelve years ago) link
well let's be clear, "good" and "amazing" are two different levels
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:20 (twelve years ago) link
I like to think on LTTP that the company inspired him.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:22 (twelve years ago) link
even tho the whole thing was ghostwritten my favorite moment of his is still "Testimonial" from Press Play
― frogbs, stills, and nash (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:22 (twelve years ago) link
eh i always thought his rapping was a pretty secondary concern on this album -- a lot of songs he only sings, or shows up w/ one verse a full two and a half minutes in. obviously there are some strong moments within those verses (it just hit me today how good he is on "someone to love me") but i mean he's still using ghostwriters and considering how often on this album it's rick ross it's kind of lol for you to say that.
xpost

whoops - I meant "Someone to Love Me" in my example.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:24 (twelve years ago) link
Diddy's always been enjoyable as a rapper if he has someone good writing for him.
Re: "Angels" sticking out, I kind of get the impression he put it out there before he'd really figured out the direction of the rest of the album and it ended up coming along for the ride. Note that the version on the album is reworked slightly from the single to fit in a bit better: those trancy synths at the beginning, no violin solo.

i've been listening to a misordered tracklist of this the entire time
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:26 (twelve years ago) link
i swear the version i actually bought is not the tracklist thats on wikioedia and amazon
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:28 (twelve years ago) link
do you have the itunes deluxe version w/ 'first place loser' on it? it's in a different order than most version of the album, but that's the one i listen to and prefer.
― lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:30 (twelve years ago) link
nah, i bought the actual CD
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:31 (twelve years ago) link
well you would be able to consult the jewelcase to straighten this out then right?
― lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:32 (twelve years ago) link
yeah, i'm not at home right now tho
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:34 (twelve years ago) link
oh ok -- fwiw the album wiki USED to show how the itunes running order differed from the CD but doesn't anymore, iirc the most prominent sequencing difference is one has "ass" then "yeah yeah" and the other has "yeah yeah" then "ass"

http://www.coverdude.com/covers/diddy-dirty-money-last-train-to-paris-back-cover-64793.jpg
this is the tracklist i have... the one on wikipedia and amazon is totally off tho -- "looking for love" is thrown to the back half, "your love" is before "shades", "yesterday" is the third to last song
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:39 (twelve years ago) link
woah and "loving you no more" isn't on it at all?
― lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:50 (twelve years ago) link
i have it as a bonus track

gonna make a playlist and listen to it based on the other tracklist tho

ok whoa this is blowing my mind
― tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:58 (twelve years ago) link
my tracklist is what jordan posted except with "last night pt 2" and "change" inserted
i cannot imagine it any other way
i initially downloaded the leak which follows jordan's tracklist, but then i purchased the record from itunes which had 1. intro 2. ass on the floor 3. yeah yeah you would... it's really strange and not nearly as natural of a track progression as jordan's/k3vin's version. no idea why it changed.
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:08 (twelve years ago) link
putting the single upfront i presume
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:09 (twelve years ago) link
Besides that reversal, though, I prefer the deluxe tracklist - I Know --> Loving You No More --> Last Night Part 2 --> Yesterday is a really smooth run, and 'Change' belongs right before 'Coming Home' if anywhere.

Surprised "Hate You Now" got no votes. And "Last Night Pt. 2"!
"Angels" I actually love but prefer the remix with Serani.

haha 'last night pt. 2' would probably be me vote in 'didnt get any votes' poll. probably my third fave on the album tbh everytime i hear the drums start i think im about to watch a really sweet 90s video
