Didn't the Stooges literally come back from touring Japan like a week ago?
Stunned. Shocked either way but moreso given the momentum, now grinding to a halt.

Oh my fucking g-d, no!!
This guy was probably the main reason I bought a wah-wah pedal. I'm now doubly thankful that a friend dragged my hermitic ass to Massey Hall last August to see him and his fellow Stooges in (Rock) action. Gonna listen to Funhouse tonight (and maybe plug in and jam along, who knows.)

I was prompted by this thread to read Ron's wiki, & discovered this curious fact: Asheton also acted, appearing with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre star Gunnar Hansen in Mosquito which came out in 1995 as well as in two other films, Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo and Legion of the Night.
The man in leaner times:

I'm still processing this, and don't really want to talk about it until I talk to D, but... Jesus. Obviously dealing with a lot of grief right now, on several different levels.

My dad saw them on Halloween in '69.
I could have seen them at SXSW a few years ago, but I didn't.
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 20:10 (fifteen years ago) link
I saw them at Roseland in 2004 or 2005; some MTV-sponsored benefit or something (for one of those orgs that's more about "raising awareness" than actually, you know, accomplishing something). The other acts on the bill were "acoustic Godsmack" and some terrible acronym-named band I can't even remember now. But the Stooges were pretty great. At that point nobody knew they were gonna record The Weirdness, though they did play at least one (and maybe two) of the Stooges songs from Skull Ring.
― unperson, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link
Never saw 'em. I wish I could post a link for a European documentary (possibly French?) that I saw on bootleg, where Ron was showing the film crew The Funhouse. I'd imagined this to be some ominous brownstone tenement, but it's a sitcom-perfect suburban home. Whose inhabitants must have been not a little freaked out to see a group of leather-clad middle-aged dudes peering through their windows. Priceless.
Sad as it is to see him go, at least Ron got to see the critical clock turn round, and play a few years of big, wild shows to committed fans around the world.

word. it's like the arthur lee thing (though maybe not to the same degree). he seemed to be having fun playing with dinosaur and stuff five years ago, but the stooges live, funhouse gigs and everything, it's a pretty neat way to end things. so glad i got to see them. hearing ron play sprawling blues guitar on all'a those tatty bootleg studio releases is testament to how great he was.

I have no respect for anyone who STILL believes in internet trolls...I mean come on people. This is 2009 not 1999!!!
By the way, I do thinkg Asheton was the best punk rock guitar player of all time. Johnny Ramone was second.

I saw the Stooges close out Bumbershoot 2005 (in Seattle). Everyone was integral to making that a fun show. Ron was the guy who stood there and made it seem so easy.

fwiw, we've re-posted an interview with Ron that I did that we ran in Arthur No. 6 in 2003. There's some good stuff in it, and a great last line.

In a 2003 interview with the Free Press, Asheton said he got great satisfaction from the recognition the Stooges had begun to receive — even if it was a long time coming.
“When I was a young guy coming up, going to the Grande Ballroom every weekend, I got to see my heroes play. Jeff Beck, the Who, everyone. I didn’t want to be a fanboy, but I’d stand there and wait — ‘I just want to say hi, this was great.’ I saw them walk by me with blank stares like they were zombies. I said to myself, you know, if I ever make it, I’ve got at least one minute for everybody who wants to say something. So I talk to people, and that’s what’s exciting now.”
