Happy birthday ILX! Plus it was sweet nostalgia clicking Tom's link and reading all the August 2000 NYLPM entries.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 26 August 2005 23:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Happy birthday ILM, you're cuter now then you ever have been. Now does anybody feel like giving presents? Or at least posting pictures of presents?

And yes, reading about hearing "Bombs Over Baghdad" for the first time seems the best way to celebrate ILM's fifth.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Saturday, 27 August 2005 01:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks for setting it up Tom -- your blog spin-off has had a big influence on my life. Pretty sure I was there that first day, and I had just started reading NYLPM. Were they even called blogs then?

whoa tom on a LOREN MAZZACANE CONNORS album!

three years pass...

Hey-ooooooooo

Woah, it's almost ILX bday time.

kshighway, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 03:59 (fourteen years ago) link

This thread was started on the first day I was at college. Freshman year. Insane.

kshighway, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 03:59 (fourteen years ago) link

That's cute. So I was right that you graduated this year, ksh?

jaymc, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, this May!

kshighway, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Welcome to ILE, big man.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:01 (fourteen years ago) link

I think this is still on ILM, Hoos?

jaymc, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:02 (fourteen years ago) link

The idea of this place being ten years old next year is a little nuts.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, we're on ILM.

kshighway, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:03 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, Ned. What's weird is thinking that I've been around for nearly 75% of the board's existence.

jaymc, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I was there since day 1! So was Dan and DJ Martian, I think.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Looks like Tim Finney and Alba and Sundar and Ally all posted in the first week as well.

jaymc, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Does Tom even still post here anymore?

kshighway, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Well that's embarassing.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:16 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost Very rarely, but he did a few days ago:

This is an interesting topic for me cos I just finished a big "decade in pop" essay piece for P4K (look out for it next thursday 'popism' fans)

Two things seem obvious to me. 1. No music now is as popular as some music used to be. 2. Some music now is still a hell of a lot more popular than other music now. I don't think (1) means (2) isn't interesting.

jaymc, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, Tom checks in here and there but he's mostly busy with Freaky Trigger, Pitchfork, his regular job and raising his kids. Not necessarily in that order.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks, jaymc & Ned. Still learning who's who.

kshighway, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:17 (fourteen years ago) link

the "name that song/mp3" game is one of my earlier FT/ILM memories.

bnw, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I was there...that first day ILM started.

Mark, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:20 (fourteen years ago) link

The B.C. era, if you like.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, I meant to mention you, Mark!

jaymc, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:27 (fourteen years ago) link

But unlike almost everyone else in those early months, I didn't know anyone from Usenet. Somehow I started reading Freaky Trigger/NYLPM a few months before, and then a post mentioned the board.

Mark, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:29 (fourteen years ago) link

So we've about a year to organise that big 10th anniversary WorldFAP then?

TuomasFAPWAF will have to do.

Hmm, search tells me my first ILM post was in December of 2001, but that was by an a-hole who liked to go around pretending to be other people. I actually showed up in May of 2002 to call shenanigans, and have hung around ever since (originally posting with my real name). "Johnny Fever" was born in September of 2003.

I take this place for granted most of the time, but I've really had a good time here the last seven years. And I've learned a hell of a lot.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 09:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Happy birthday you dear old thing. And a massive thankyou to Keith & the backroom people for making everything so much smoother and more usable without losing its essence at all.

(I find ILM too addictive and tempting to even lurk mostly - I rely on people to pass the good stuff on - but I've been enjoying the P2K reaction threads.)

But ILX has aged a lot better than me.

debateable.

10 bloody years.
i think i first found this place by accident about 9 years ago.
not sure i should celebrate it, gien this thing has at times nearly lost me my job.
of course, i jest. bravo to all those that keep the machines a ticking.

mark e, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 14:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Here from very nearly the beginning - I posted on a thread called The UK Music Press: Has It Ever Been Good? on Aug 31, 2000. It wasn't a very good post but Stevie T made a better one immediately afterwards to which I responded "I agree with Stevie". I should have mostly stuck with the latter approach.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 14:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Needs Stevie to say something first though.

Mark G, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 15:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Not really.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 15:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I agree with Stevie and Michael Jones.

hahaha good times

I was scanning back through AMA via Google Groups a few years ago and realized exactly how many of those folks made the jump over here; it was kind of frightening! (Also made me wonder what happened to folks like ML Compton and Mark Bartlam.) I also stumbled across what was probably my first Usenet post, back in September 1991 on rec.music.industrial... and it was answered by donut bitch!

ML's still around, just saw him earlier this year at Sparks.

About the only a.m.a. regulars who never turned up besides ML and Mark were Persi and G*ndola B*b.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 15:38 (fourteen years ago) link

hahaha oh the reflexive googleproofing

Did JackieBlue come over here, too?

About 'justifying' time spent here and all (and don't worry dog latin, I'm not singling you out or anything!):

In a segment of the interview series I did with Scott Woods the other month I predicted there would be some 'argh where did the time go' handwringing of sorts -- not the most radical of predictions and I'm sure a number of posts like that are functioning more in a sense of 'wow time did fly' or light humor rather than deep angst or anything like that.

I'd simply suggest this -- ILX functions as a constantly archived mass conversation, but at base is just that, a conversation. It is no more something to justify than the conversations we all have with others who inspire, amuse, engage or even annoy us in any number of contexts. For some it's a necessary outlet when no other one seems available, for others it's just part of how we communicate with others in general, there's no one answer.

And as such, these conversations are part of how we learn and reflect and act, continually. The archiving may be new in terms of human history, the many distances crossed similarly, but it is simply a continuing of that which has been a hallmark of language and humanity in general. It's only something to justify, or a waste of time, if you think it needs to be.

There are plenty of things I've regretted saying or writing or thinking over all my years on this planet, there's plenty of things I'm proud of. There are arguments and discussions I wish I hadn't been caught up in, there were others I was thrilled by and wished wouldn't end. ILX is just a subset of that -- and on balance, it's a damned good one, a resource, a comfort zone, a chance to connect, more besides. People stay in conversations and discussions, people leave them, people leave and return and leave...that's no different from the rest of life. Neither are the sometimes wonderfully ridiculous in-jokes.

I think that's all the justification anyone needs, really.

very pleased to read this. hope you're well.
