I'm no fan of Dr Who but 10 year old me had a crush on Adric. so there it is.
― Trayce, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 12:32 (sixteen years ago) link
I think a lot of people sleep on precisely how awesome a companion Zoe actually was. She was like a version of Adric who actually worked as a character (although in fairness, Adric made more sense with the 4th Doctor and Romana II than he did with Nyssa and Tegan).
― HI DERE, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago) link
i think my favorite companion was the totally useless but well-meaning doctor who wore a blue blazer and was always bollixing things up, can't remember his name but he was in the ark of time

Harry Sullivan! He was awesome, plus that actor wrote a bunch of the Target novelizations of the original series.

I watched The Face of Evil for the first time this week, and now I'm feeling a bit bad about the fact I didn't vote for Leela.
But also, have started watching The Krotons, and Zoe is very good too.

Apparently the guy who played Harry Sullivan wrote a Who movie that never got produced. "The finale of the film was to have taken place on a giant pinball table, the holes in the table being portals to other dimensions."
― Tracer Hand, Thursday, 8 May 2008 00:24 (sixteen years ago) link
sounds like Douglas Adams' cricket-based Who movie.

Yes, except instead of cricket, pinball.
― Tracer Hand, Thursday, 8 May 2008 02:13 (sixteen years ago) link
well, yeah
but why cosmic sport the theme for *two* proposed terrible Dr Who movies? was hardly anything that was a feature of the series. it is a bafflement.

Doctor Who Meets Scratchman (the Ian Marter script discussed above) was something him and Tom came up with in the pub and really got quite far up in the planning stage. There was a good article about it in DWM a year or so ago.
Doctor Who And The Krikkitmen got turned into Life, The Universe and Everything; but chunks of it get reused in various places in The Pirate Planet. Ironic, really, since he stole the core idea of the TARDIS turning up at Lords from The Dalek Master Plan.
Of course, Adams' real Who crib was turning City Of Death (to a lesser degree0 and Shada into Dirk Gently.
― aldo, Thursday, 8 May 2008 10:21 (sixteen years ago) link
I read about this years ago in one of those 25th-anniversary books they put out. Apparently the idea got scrapped when they went to see Star Wars and realised that the whole level of audience-acceptable special effects on the big screen had just jumped well beyond the limits set by BBC-style budgets.

Watching the Tom Baker episodes right now (I'm about midway through Genesis) I am so down with Harry. Dude rules.
I'm not sure I really get the Sarah Jane love, she seems a bit of a blank slate to me.

What happened to Leela? Was my vote disqualified?
― The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 10:18 (sixteen years ago) link
I think the best aspects of Sarah Jane are
1) tends to be a bit cheeky with the doctor, and ribs him affectionately quite often.
2) has a Rose-like enthusiasm for the whole adventure thing, but carries it off less smugly.
3) is good at going off and looking after herself when she needs to
4) is cute.
Also surprised by the Nyssa votes, she really was a black slate. And yes, also surprised by the lack of Leela love too.

1980? They were showing reruns of older 4th Doctor stories on our local PBS station so the first episode I saw was "The Android Invasion".
