See that poster upthread? Stare at it for ten seconds, then decide if you want to see the film. It's a pretty accurate advertisement for the movie.

see, it's the kid that worries me

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:00 (twenty years ago) link

that poster is hilarious, i'm actually incredulous that the movie could possibly live up to it

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:00 (twenty years ago) link

but the kid

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:01 (twenty years ago) link

that said, the kid never makes that expression throughout the entire movie. I warmed to the kid, but no, he wasn't initially all that welcome.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:01 (twenty years ago) link

but stare into that elf's face. Therein lies the key.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:02 (twenty years ago) link

The kid ruined the trailer for me.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 30 November 2003 08:07 (twenty years ago) link

how much gilmore girl is in this?

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 30 November 2003 08:40 (twenty years ago) link

her not being in the poster is an ominous sign

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 30 November 2003 09:02 (twenty years ago) link

i mean, they put the kid in and not lauren graham? and they want people to come see this?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 30 November 2003 09:02 (twenty years ago) link

she was very endearing on conan

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

I took Adam's advice, I wanna see this film!!!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:10 (twenty years ago) link

There's something about a film that goes out of its way to be utterly appalling that makes me want to see it in the worst way. Bad Santa is a demonstration of this. Whoever greenlighted this is a genius, and all I've seen is the trailer.

I saw it at a matinee, and four elderly people walked about halfway through - I guess they were expecting The Santa Clause - missing the redemption. I like how Zwigoff is the anti-Alexander Payne, it would be too easy to be misanthropic with the characters and topics he dealt with.

The ending isn't as bad as I'd been led to believe, and for once the really-dark ending wouldn't have satisfied me.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 05:07 (twenty years ago) link

Oh yeah I saw this in Chicago, it wasn't as funny as I expected. But it was ok.

I really, really liked the black comedy aspect. So much so I resented the redemption and rehumanization aspect.

Has anyone seen the DVD release with the x-rated footage they cut out? Is it worth renting? Because I thought it was about the funniest goddamn thing I saw last year. "You're not gonna shit right for a week!"

badder santa isnt worth getting - i could only pinpoint about 2 extra scenes, one in a strip club. so if you like to go out of your way to check out some extra titties on a dvd, this ones for you.

billy bob's performance in this movie kind of reminds me of jeff bridges in the big lebowski, this sort of don't-blink absurdist deadpan character study. i love that!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:33 (nineteen years ago) link

This looks good. Is it getting a UK release?

I love the movie. I especially like it as a companion piece to Shakes the Clown.

Did you ever see it, jel? I've watched it twice in the last week. Still don't know what the talking walnut might be. The Christmas present the kid gives him is quite insane.

four weeks pass...
Seen this! We sat back and watched it on Christmas eve, and I nearly wet myself. I wasn't expecting the language to be quite as 'strong' - I'm glad we didn't watch it with Kevs parents as was our original intention.

"Are you fucking with me kid?"

The scene with the draughts was hilarious. No, I didn't get the talking walnut part either, and I didn't get what the guy in the bar/car park was all about. "I am not gay."

Re Acid House - I remember seeing "Screenplay by Irvine Welsh" and thinking "Uh-oh"

Rightly, as it turned out. Being a bunch of short stories, some were OK, but when they were bad, they were very bad.

Mark G, Monday, 21 November 2016 22:29 (seven years ago) link

there's only 3 of the short stories from the book in the film, it is a bad film
