can i just mention how much i fucking hate when people focus on fatness with a fucking vengeance when they're pissed at people for other reasons?

i mean, why dont you just make fun of their game leg or lazy eye or superfluous ear?

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

This chick has a superfluous ear! You have got to get some of that action.

Can I just say that I don't mind the ridicule of obesity, unlike Jess. However, I don't get why noisy fucking is being made out to be officially rude on this thread. If you scream, you scream. It can't be turned down. Imagine getting all horny beyond belief, and then stopping to say, "Oh, but that dipshit Yancey might be sleeping/studying/writing about us on the internet. Let's not, eh?"

Very funny thread.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Deal with it or move out. People fuck. Some people fuck loudly. You don't like it, then live alone.

I am also kind of lost as to why the weight of this guy's girlfriend was even mentioned. It doesn't lend your argument any weight and it makes you sound like an asshole who deserves to be annoyed (which you very well may be).

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am lost as to why Back to the Future was mentioned. Disrespecting Robert Zemeckis doesn't make you very sympathetic. The man won an Oscar.

there is a second option to alex's fist para: have you ASKED him to keep it down? it works, you know.

second para spot on. (although, nb, i dont think yancey is an asshole.)

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have not asked yet. I'm going to talk to him tonight. I had been waiting it out, simply because he seems to go through gals rather quickly. It seems as if this one is going to be around for a while now.

It's a nuisance more than anything. I'm not really pissed off about it. It's a bit annoying, but also funny. I'm not home very much, so I've been avoiding dealing with it, hoping it would just somehow go away.

As to the weight thing: Yeah, it was crude of me to mention (the thread title was supposed to be a grabber more than anything), but I wanted to mention this weird thing they have with food (all the junk food I found her with one night and the completely strange cooking thing they were doing earlier this week). The weight wasn't neccessary for that, but I thought it was an entertaining addition. Anyway, sorry to those who I offended with that. I'm no weightist, promise!

Yancey (ystrickler), Friday, 15 November 2002 00:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jess and Tom are right on. The fatist overtones of this whole thread make me sick. Ok, they are annoying. You're making an issue of someones weight as a derogatory statement - "300 pounds of lard banging against the wall". What you are doing is making the reader make a negative image in their mind based on a stereotype you think may already be there. You fucking cunt.

Yes they are annoying. Why make an issue of the girls weight other than to compound your point? Because you are seeking to use prejudice as a way to re-enforce your arguement.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 15 November 2002 00:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

The thought of someone yelling "FUCK YOU MCFLY" during sex is really really funny to me (for whatever reason). THAT is a great anecdote by itself and however this situation ends up you will be able to tell it over and over again and get great laughs!

I'm sorry, you can't make the statement that you're not weightist after that thread header. That was a casual insult, delivered without thought of the offence it may cause. Simply put, you cannot attack someone on those grounds unless you're prepared to stick to your guns and say "I fucking hate fat people, they revolt me". If, as I gather, your problem is more with the noisy sex then fine, that's annoying. But you can't shrug off discrimination like that with a simple "I was trying to get peoples attention". Tolerance is not selective, accept, or don't. Or possibly grow the fuck up.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 15 November 2002 00:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

He didn't say he hates fat people, he said he hates the sound of fat people having sex loudly in the next room.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 15 November 2002 00:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

That distinction somehow escapes me, James (especially given the number of derogatory descriptions of this women's weight when she wasn't fucking his housemate.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 15 November 2002 00:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Indeed, if weight wasn't an issue then he would have referred to her as "Her", rather than as "Fattie".

Matt (Matt), Friday, 15 November 2002 00:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Okay, I give up. Yancey's evil, and this thread is comparable to the holocaust.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 15 November 2002 00:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jess, are you trying to pretend the Holocaust never happened? Tsk, tsk. Hahaha

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 15 November 2002 00:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Weightism is sometimes justified as some people get fat because they have no concern for their own health which is an undesirable character trait ETC

The Fruit Loops/Ice Cream/Oreos image suggests this might be the case, and in which case FUCKING GROSS.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 15 November 2002 01:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nah, not asking if yer fat because I read above that yer not. Just wondering why the level of anger over it all. I'm just saying is that I really don't want to be fat - not while I'm in my 20s anyway - and I find fat people a bit horrible on the eye. It's like saying that bald or spotty people make you sick, it's a bit snide but fair enough. I bet there's already another thread on this 'do appearances matter' schtick so if someone can give a link then I can see how y'all think. I'm fair surprised at the animosity over this, maybe it's because I'm drunk and not thinking about what I'm posting. Anyhow I'm off to sleep.

haha so jess we doing this calvin klein shoot tomorrow or what?

jones (actual), Friday, 15 November 2002 01:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

well, ian, the animosity stems from the fact that the hate directed towards the fat goes well beyond that spewed at the bald or the spotty. my girlfriend was harassed at the mall this past spring because she was wearing a tank top which didn't suit the notion of what three or four teenage assholes felt that a "fat girl" should be wearing. now, i doubt that anyone who's ever experienced this would claim that it's as widespread or possibly even as noxious as harassment slung for being black or gay or a woman or handicapped or... but the underlying assumption in all circumstances is that these people should not exist. try living in a world where people make this assumption about you, even infrequently, and see how much it niggles under yr skin like so many bamboo shoots.

"The sound of 300 pounds of lard banging against the wall..."
"I can hear Fattie screaming. And I can hear him slapping against her flesh. It's the worst sound I've ever heard. It's unbelievably revolting."
"his awful girlfriend"
"USE NAPALM. I love the smell of burning fat in the morning."
"Can I just say that I don't mind the ridicule of obesity"
"Fat people are gross. The thought of fat people screwing is even grosser."
"I find fat people a bit horrible on the eye"

So despises is a better word, Aaron? Perhaps loathes?

geeta (geeta), Friday, 15 November 2002 03:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Only Spack has made the hateful, ad hominem attacks. And some of the lines you quote are clearly ironic or sarcastic.

Visually/aesthetically obesity can be unattractive. It's wrong (or presumptuous) to blame the fat person for being fat, however, and then to hold it against him. But if I note an attitude of carelessness on that person's part with regard to the weight problem, I will find it unbecoming in the same way I find a person's abuse of drugs unbecoming. Lazy, reckless, indulgent behavior. But ultimately just a character flaw like any other, not some sort of damanble offense.

Aaron A., Friday, 15 November 2002 03:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's a much less unappealling character flaw than exhibiting general nastiness and insensitivity, Aaron. Finding someone unattractive is A LOT fucking different from mocking them and making it clear that you find them to be disgusting. Also I don't think any of the lines I quoted were ironic or sarcastic (although the napalm is probably not completely at face value, it doesn't seem as though s/he is joking about finding fat people revolting.)

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 15 November 2002 06:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not to defend the riducle of fat people per se here, but consider two things: hearing people have sex is irritating, hearing people have sex and thus imagining this going on when you find one of these people gross looking is another -- i.e. if his roommate were dating some slim supermodel hearing her have sex wouldn't call to mind the same images, and thus might not be as much of an issue.

Second: He hears the slapping which I assume is caused by the sex act itself and not ass-slapping over the course of this. But in either case this slapping noise would be louder with a heavier person, again adding to the annoyance factor.

In other words, I don't think we should just be like "fuck fucking fatties dumb fat fucks" (/cartman) but y'know there was actually some relevance to this information.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 15 November 2002 06:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't know if it's been scientifically tested but the loudness-of-slapping thing sounds like nonsense.

Making too much noise doing anything in shared accomodation *is* rude if it's in the middle of the night - sex is no exception. I think there's an added thrill of faux-illicitness in trying to keep it quiet, anyway, but my tastes don't run to "FUCK YOU MCFLY!"

I'm with Jess and Alex on the fat thing, generally. Anti-fat prejudice does not however equate to the holocaust - I wish people would think before posting stuff like that cos it's waving a big sign around saying "HEY EVERYONE DONT TAKE ME SERIOUSLY!". Mind you that's what Ian, Aaron etc. have been doing too, so fair's fair.

Sumo guys aare actually healthier than alot of people because they exercise alot. They're hearts are the correct size for their body weight.

Not that they aren't gross...

In any case, second hand smoke is overblown, I already said I was OUTSIDE, and as such only making myself less healthy.

SO. She's a fatass, and should be treated as such.

Fat people nowadays somehow trying to ride the coattails of actual minority groups to make themselves feel good about their fattness disgusts me even more than seeing them teach their children to be fat.
Does that sentence need a semicolon?
THEY SHOULD NOT FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEIR PHYSICAL SELVES. Unless they've actually stuck to a prescribed dietery plan given to them by a physician, exercised, and somehow were still unable to lose weight.

seven months pass...

I've just been drawn to this thread as I've been woken up at 5am in the morning by one of my housemates moaning somewhat too loudly.

I think Gilded... has a point in that obesity is one of the largest problems we face in society today. There is a precisely defined medical cut off line for obesity and any person who is clinically overweight should learn the following- firstly how to develop a healthy mindset so that they may deal with scenarios which may bring their obesity and body image into question; secondly, how to actually combat their obesity (if you are clinically obese this is NOT a healthy body state and you may be shortening your lifespan considerably); thirdly the consequences you have on other people, most importantly your children if you have any. If an obese parent is lazy enough to instill the same attitude towards food in their children they are effectively destroying their own child's life.
In summary, if you are clinically obese, DON'T try and pretend it's fine and dandy by accusing people who raise the issue of insensitivity.
If you're not and you think you're fat, listen to the men in your life who say that you're not. They are right when they say you are beautiful.

Back on topic, while I was writing this comment (accompanied by the oh so disgusting sounds of my housemate in the next room), said housemate's parents came over to visit. They were let into the house and came straight up to her room. Suffice to say that the words "This is your mother. Your father, grandmother and I shall be waiting downstairs for you" have probably scarred her for life!

Also, issue sorted!

j0n, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I am really disappointed this thread title wasn't literal. I've dropped 50 lb. bricks of lard onto tile floors before and it makes the most fascinating SCHLOPPPP sound. So I thought, 'Wow, this will be a great description! Three-HUNDRED pounds of lard, hurled with enough velocity to hit a wall. That sound's gotta be EPIC!"

I don't care about others' weight, it's none of my business. And I find hearing roommates' sex, while not exciting, revealing and somewhat entertaining. For example, once my roommate was fucking a waitress in the next room over (he went through waitresses pretty fast and soon ran out of breakfast joints). She kept yelling "I LOVE YOU!!!" and he shouted back "I KNOW!"

Abbott, Sunday, 27 April 2008 21:09 (sixteen years ago) link
