Hopkins is in his 40s, he wasn't going to knock Calzaghe out so I think he was making sure he did everything he could to take it the distance. To be fair he came back in it in the last couple of round after his ball break. He's a smart boxer, as is Calzaghe, they both changed their game as the match went on and I think Calzaghe walking forward and throwing more punches edged it. I don't think he came close to hurting Hopkins.

he should come to the uk for a rematch. put his money where his big mouth is and fight instead of running away.
― Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 20 April 2008 03:21 (sixteen years ago) link
It was close though. Dunno how that judge had Calzaghe 5 ahead.
― Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 20 April 2008 03:25 (sixteen years ago) link
Weird that with Hopkins actually being there he seemed to see a different match from everyone else. Maybe if he'd looked for that right-hand more than the grapple he'd have built on his excellent first three rounds. Jumping inside and holding doesn't sell rematch tickets. He's now lost (I think) as many fights as Frank Bruno :)
Not sure Calzaghe should fight at this weight again. I know he struggles to make super-mid but if he isn't carrying enough power at light-heavy to hurt a 43 year-old man who's running away he's going to struggle. I think Roy Jones (who he hinted at) would take his head off.

I think you are right.
― Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 20 April 2008 03:28 (sixteen years ago) link
I do feel the weight is just too much for Calzaghe.
― Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 20 April 2008 03:31 (sixteen years ago) link
and whatever that judge was drinking was too much as well
― Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 20 April 2008 03:32 (sixteen years ago) link
I scored this so wrong, I had 15-12 Hopkins.
― jim, Sunday, 20 April 2008 03:34 (sixteen years ago) link
N.B. I know nothing about boxing but watch every big fight and at least I wasn't drunk this time.
― jim, Sunday, 20 April 2008 03:35 (sixteen years ago) link
you saw 27 rounds? You didn't half score it wrong!
― Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 20 April 2008 03:35 (sixteen years ago) link
Haha, 115-112 even, or was it 115-111? Anyway it was heavy wrong.
― jim, Sunday, 20 April 2008 03:38 (sixteen years ago) link
I had Hopkins with all a 40-35 lead after four rounds so it's hard to see how anyone could give it to Joe by more than a couple of points, particularly with Hopkins having his fair share of the last three.
As I see it Calzaghe didn't "finish Bernard Hopkins" as he claimed and Hopkins certainly didn't "take Calzaghe to school" as he claimed.
Calzaghe was the more adventurous fighter for most of the fight and Hopkins was cagey enough to prevent Calzaghe having much of an impact.
Both of them have had their best successes as counter-punchers. It didn't suit Joe to go forward and Hopkins never had any intention of going forward so it didn't make for a good fight.
― onimo, Sunday, 20 April 2008 03:49 (sixteen years ago) link
i don't think either one acquitted himself very well. this was my first time seeing cal - dude's pretty dirty, even in contrast with hopkins. his swings are incredibly amateurish. if bhop had more than one speed he could've run away with the fight in the second half - overall he landed less but i thought when he did land his shots were a lot cleaner. cal couldn't hurt him at all, he was just slapping away at bhop the whole time. i don't have a problem with the decision, it was a close enough fight, but calzaghe came off like an incredible punk.
― cankles, Sunday, 20 April 2008 05:19 (sixteen years ago) link
Thank god Hopkins and Hatton could never match weight.
― milo z, Sunday, 20 April 2008 05:29 (sixteen years ago) link
Of course he came off like an incredible punk, he's a boxer.

Let's get it on!

British boxing: pretty good for a nation of white people that isn't Russia. Or Germany. Or Denmark.
Having said that, Froch's beating this Polish OAP into a coma at the moment, so it's not all :-(

So Hatton wins. Anyone pay to see it or go to pub to watch it? (i didnt)
― Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 24 May 2008 23:14 (fifteen years ago) link
Sopcasted it. I think it may be safe to say Hatton will never be a P4P top 10 fighter ever again. His inside work looked like shit and he's quite clearly not gonna be able to keep up the pro-ana weight loss routines before every fight from now on.
― Dom Passantino, Saturday, 24 May 2008 23:17 (fifteen years ago) link
He will make a fortune from another Mayweather fight, which is probably the only thing that keeps him going.

Khans inexperience showed, but his brilliance won in the end. Don't think that will be enough to win a world title yet though.

and we're back for one last Calzaghe fight. What time are we expecting them in the ring?
I dreamt last week that Calzaghe took Jones out in the first round. So not gonna happen. I'm going for Calzaghe with a very late stoppage.
― Cool Hand Tiller (onimo), Sunday, 9 November 2008 01:05 (fifteen years ago) link
oops. Calzaghe with as good a start as he made against Hopkins.
― Cool Hand Tiller (onimo), Sunday, 9 November 2008 04:51 (fifteen years ago) link
Then wins the next 11 rounds. Good fight but neither boxer at his best. Calzaghe seems to have lost a bit of power or he's protecting his dodgy hands. Jones seems to have lost a bit of everything.
Rematch in Cardiff or Joe's retirement?
― Cool Hand Tiller (onimo), Sunday, 9 November 2008 05:41 (fifteen years ago) link
Rematch in Cardiff, because then I won't have to give up in a pathetic attempt to keep my eyes open until early o'clock.
