can't decide yet

I agree with you, decade by decade starting with the 00s

DO NOT CALL (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:28 (1 year ago) Permalink

I'm leaning towards all-time (I guess more than a lean, because I already voted "all-time").

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:28 (1 year ago) Permalink

I def think there should be a 'no-poll' option.

speaking of which, not to derail, but what is the status on the single-artist polls?

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:29 (1 year ago) Permalink

one poll for each decade than do all-time music videos poll two years later

Bee OK, Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:29 (1 year ago) Permalink

no-poll option? you dont have to participate.

billstevejim, Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:30 (1 year ago) Permalink

I'm down but thinking about all the time it would take me to dig in my memory archives for underground gems that nobody else but me cares about makes my head hurt.

All time music video poll would probably get more people participating and it's less exhausting but we'll end up with all the common suspects. Decade by decade would probably reveal more interesting things in the lower ranks.

Moka, Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:30 (1 year ago) Permalink

iirc they resume after the 2011 albums rollout is done. xps

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:30 (1 year ago) Permalink

what happened to those artist ones from a few months ago?

billstevejim, Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:31 (1 year ago) Permalink

i dont want the no-poll option actually, i was thinking maybe some folks would think this poll along with the single-artist polls would be overload...?

dont mind me; i am thinking Moka is right and we shd do decade-by-decade

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:33 (1 year ago) Permalink

would we be limited to official music videos or can we voted for like youtube/vimeo only fan-made tribute vidz?

'ok' (Lamp), Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:39 (1 year ago) Permalink

decade by decade starting from the 00s

(i think that process would help kickstart the memory for older videos)

you have to make sure videos aren't embedded in either nomination/results threads though otherwise shit will be unloadable

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:43 (1 year ago) Permalink

― 'ok' (Lamp), Wednesday, January 25, 2012 9:39 PM (18 minutes ago)

i think official only would be the way to go but i'm open to fanmade/tribute stuff

also, as we get further back (70's 60's) do we include TV performances/ concert films?

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:59 (1 year ago) Permalink

that seems like a totally different thing - i don't think people judge live footage in the same way that they do a music video

(though i wouldn't be averse to a poll of live clips at some point, because many over the years have been pretty amazing)

OTM, I'm definitely in favour of doing it decade by decade.

(not really)

What would be considered the 'first' MV?

Obv not "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Possibly "Strawberry fields"?

Maybe even those short films people like Cab Calloway did for "Minnie the Moocher", etc.

half-decades yes really!

i think it should be 00s, 90s, and 80s with a pretty well defined idea of what a 'music video' is, and then pre-80s with a more open definition

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 12:59 (1 year ago) Permalink

Just split the polls in that case, there's probably only a handful of videos pre-MTV era whereas there are several TV performances from the 80s onwards.

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:44 (1 year ago) Permalink

There are actually *shitloads* of soundies and scopitones and early filmic presentations pre-MTV, guys. But I'm not going to argue with "pre-80s" as a grouping, I think that should work out okay.

emil.y, Thursday, 26 January 2012 18:21 (1 year ago) Permalink

I'm getting in an early lobby. Everyone NEEDS to vote for this:

emil.y, Thursday, 26 January 2012 18:22 (1 year ago) Permalink

i like the idea of a "pre-80's" poll-- we'd need a consensus on what would qualify for nomination

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 26 January 2012 18:39 (1 year ago) Permalink

ok are ppl going to be pissed if we start doing these while the artist polls are taking place?

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 00:04 (1 year ago) Permalink

No

billstevejim, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 00:07 (1 year ago) Permalink

Sex Pistols "My Way" is a good 70's video IIRC

billstevejim, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 00:09 (1 year ago) Permalink

Hm. I'd say give it a little while, as we haven't even finished the EoY polls yet. I don't tend to participate in the balloted artist polls but I'd say that this is a big enough thing to stand alone. But I dunno, maybe ask in the organisation thread?

emil.y, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 00:09 (1 year ago) Permalink

ok when should we do this

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 01:17 (1 year ago) Permalink

a) it is not a video, it is an excerpt from a feature film

Let's do this thing!

emil.y, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 18:29 (1 year ago) Permalink

shouldn't the '10s be lumped in with the '00s? or maybe there could be some kind of seperate 'youtube era unofficial videos/fan videos/mashups' poll?

Alshipleyan Goalpostmover (some dude), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 18:33 (1 year ago) Permalink

i would be ok with the first poll being 2000-present

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 18:34 (1 year ago) Permalink

gonna start campaigning for Rebecca Black for #1 right now fyi

Alshipleyan Goalpostmover (some dude), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 18:35 (1 year ago) Permalink

I was gonna say don't lump them in together, but on reflection I'm fine with it. Works okay for me.

v good suggestion but i think going by decade will keep it simpler/invite more participation

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 18:52 (1 year ago) Permalink

yeah, it's tempting to overtly craft the narrative but i think the eras are going to shake themselves out pretty clearly no matter what

Alshipleyan Goalpostmover (some dude), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 18:53 (1 year ago) Permalink

i'll submit a ballot if it's okay to only vote for one video

You sure showed me.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:43 (1 year ago) Permalink

To me it's a video.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:43 (1 year ago) Permalink

I always felt this way, but if a segment from a feature can be shown as a stand-alone clip on TV out of context and still look like an awesome video, then why shouldn't it be? I think excluding clips from TV shows or movies limits the options way too much, especially for clips from the 60s and 70s. This would mean we can't include James Brown "Please Please Please" because it was part of a movie? That's just stupid reasoning IMO.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:51 (1 year ago) Permalink

If the 2010's are going to be included, maybe do that one last so that more time can pass. I would vote against lumping them in with the 2000's.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:55 (1 year ago) Permalink

just my dumb opinions. ignore me

billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:55 (1 year ago) Permalink

The 10's are a decade of its own but maybe we should just ignore post-2010 in these polls since it's been only two years.

Moka, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:59 (1 year ago) Permalink

I was thinking, poll the other decades first.. If people want to do the 2010's by the time all the others are finished, then go for it.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 22:01 (1 year ago) Permalink

should we even bother polling the 90s when we know this video will win?

getting stoked for noms threads!!!

ok we can't all agree but how about we start with:

1st poll: 2000-Present
2nd poll: 90's
3rd poll: 80's

then figure out if we wanna continue decade by decade or just do a 70's and earlier thing

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:31 (1 year ago) Permalink

i want to do 90s first so i cant actually vote

What you suggest sounds fine, gr80. I'm most excited about anything pre-80s but I'm happy to wait.

emil.y, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:37 (1 year ago) Permalink

i doubt ive ever seen more than 20 80s music videos!! and i dont really have a good sense of music videos post like 2003 either

BJ O (Lamp), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:39 (1 year ago) Permalink

I never got why people still made videos in the era after mtv was playing them but before youtube

iatee, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:40 (1 year ago) Permalink

i think allowing enough time for ppl to watch nominations they may not be familiar with will be croosh

like lamp bro i know your role around here is niche nerdy expert but maybe you'll learn something from the others this time~~

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:45 (1 year ago) Permalink

oh yah im excited to see the results roll out even if i dont vote but 90s videos are just something that have ~~~opinions~~~ abt

BJ O (Lamp), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:47 (1 year ago) Permalink

oh def but maybe you'll see enough in the noms threads that you decide to vote idk

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:50 (1 year ago) Permalink

youtube is gonna make like five million dollars off this poll

iatee, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:50 (1 year ago) Permalink

Just had a thought - should we get people to just post up the short links that don't auto-embed? Otherwise all the threads will be a massive pain to load. Or should we just figure that people will know those threads are youtube-heavy and 'enter at your own risk'?

emil.y, Thursday, 9 February 2012 00:48 (1 year ago) Permalink

short links arent a bad idea but it being a music video poll i feel like we should go w/ embeds

pr0 tip: you can always turn images off in settings to avoid loading 700 youtubes

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 9 February 2012 00:51 (1 year ago) Permalink

maybe short links in noms thread and embeds in results?

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 9 February 2012 00:51 (1 year ago) Permalink

Oh yeah, I'd expect the results thread to have embeds! The noms threads will have way more videos posted, though.

emil.y, Thursday, 9 February 2012 00:54 (1 year ago) Permalink

I agree with short links in noms...if there are multiple videos I want to watch in a thread I'll usually open them in new tabs anyway as otherwise I'll forget there's something playing and navigate away.

two lights crew (seandalai), Thursday, 9 February 2012 01:07 (1 year ago) Permalink

embeds are gonna be a pain even in the results thread tbh - it's not that hard to click on a link surely?

I never got why people still made videos in the era after mtv was playing them but before youtube

how long was this era though? i remember seeing tons of music videos in the early 00s on mtv or its offshoots. can't remember when youtube really started but this must only have been a couple of years

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 9 February 2012 10:41 (1 year ago) Permalink

There was that era around 2000-2005 when videos were tagged onto CD singles so people could watch them on their computer. I suppose as well it was still a necessary promotional tool for those acts who couldn't make it to Romania or wherever.

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Thursday, 9 February 2012 11:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

i know this only applies to the musical 1% but fwiw TRL was on the air till 2008

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:02 (1 year ago) Permalink

haha i totally looked that up on wikipedia after i posted the other day cuz i felt like trl had continued post-carson but i wasnt really sure for how long. 2008 was... much later than i had expected.

BJ O (Lamp), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:54 (1 year ago) Permalink

lol i loved enhanced cd singles :)

teledyldonix, Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:58 (1 year ago) Permalink

maybe now would be a good time to point out that youtube embedding sucks ass and it's not too late for the mods to overturn the dumbest decision they ever made

Alshipleyan Goalpostmover (some dude), Friday, 10 February 2012 02:43 (1 year ago) Permalink

auto-embedding, i mean

Alshipleyan Goalpostmover (some dude), Friday, 10 February 2012 02:43 (1 year ago) Permalink

disagree

⚓ (gr8080), Friday, 10 February 2012 02:44 (1 year ago) Permalink

why couldn't they make it so any image URL you post automatically becomes an image in the thread with no BBcode formatting required? that would actually be super useful all the time and wouldn't make loading threads a pain in the ass, unlike youtubes.

Alshipleyan Goalpostmover (some dude), Friday, 10 February 2012 02:46 (1 year ago) Permalink

2 months pass...

Any more thoughts on doing this, gr8080? If you're not up for it, I'm willing to take over... though it'd be my first poll-running experience, so you'd doubtless be the better candidate.
