dude who ran negative guest list zine out of australia died last night! RIP

flopson, Friday, 3 February 2012 05:16 (1 year ago) Permalink

well, i guess no one else read that zine. it was really good!

i've been listening to the BROWN SUGAR "Sings of Birds and Racism" LP from last year a tonne lately. i didn't really get it when i first heard it, too chaotic or something and the vocals seemed too low in the mix--anyways, i'm glad i returned to it because it is a WILD WILD RECORD. i've listened to it maybe eight or ten times so far and it still not only grows on me with each listen, but totally fucking blows my mind EVERY TIME. it's like, super /punk/, too. unlike my other fav 2011 punk lp wiccans - skullduggery it's less likely to appeal only to the fan of hardcore punk; it's really fast and has breakdowns but it's much more a guitar rock record. it's got a lot of hot licks, every once in a while you can hear a saxophone (?) wailing away. i can't stress how important it is you dudes listen to this record. it's relentlessly creative, manic but not spazzy, full of surprises, totally over the top and addictive. and honestly the amount of ENERGY that is TRANSFERED INTO YOUR BODY when you listen to it is actually insane

I will probably be going to all of those, money permitting

Is this referring to live show, or just generally? A friend is trying to get me to go see them (The Men, that is), but it would require travelling over an hour, which I don't really do too much any more.

Mish Bondage from Sado Nation turns up in Scotland working for the BNP. Her current band just kicked her out of the band since this came out.

nu-kilslug still an unbelievable thing to me. played a show with them last year and they went 90 minutes, basically doing every song they knew because the crowd wouldn't let them stop. they also put out a pretty demented record this year, 11" red vinyl that plays from the inside out, in a hardcover leather sleeve embossed w/ gold lettering. the label's selling them at a loss, total labor of satanic love.

RIP pat dzieweczynski of TVBC, legendary underground band here in minneapolis, he was in the original 80s lineup alongside paul metzger and freddy votel (votel was later in the cows, now in skoal kodiak)....but they were amazing, still play sometimes w/different lineup...but definitely flew the flag for weirdo punk funk jazz post punk improv in the 80s

you can listen to their classic album Ex-Cathedra here:

I feel like a weasel asking this every year instead of keeping up with this thread, but are there any consensus best punk/emo/noise-rock/hardcore/post-hardcore albums I should be checking out this year before making my EOY list? loud monotonous knuckledragger bar brawl blooze punk. don't think I'm projecting when I say it sounds deeply Australian. this is probably gonna be silly expensive for me to try and buy on wax, I might just spring for the download

That FNU Ronnies album is very silly. The Converge record is great; one of the few I've actually heard this year. That Bits of Shit album is a hoot, too. Exactly what I want from an Australian punk band.

this band WOLFBAIT from Ireland could go in rolling noise or metal equally reasonably but I think folks here will dig it the most. it's been streaming a few weeks but I think a tape now exists, physically. should be graduated to LP at some point, imo. really REALLY killer grindy industrial bleakness ffo Swans/Buttholes/Today Is The Day/Shit & Shine while not sounding much like any of em. good review by ILX's MacDara here: http://thumped.com/music-reviews/wolfbait-wolfbait.html
