the only reason to go to mr ramen is if you dont want to wait 30 mins to get into daikokuya

As an alternate, you can always go to Sanuki No Sato in Gardena and get the udon.

Still I'm vaguely pleased that Orochon Ramen is opening up a new location in Burbank just up the street from me. I'm a little suspicious about the whole stunt "super spicy" ramen.

It's pretty good ramen if you don't want to torture yourself. Buncha friends and a couple people around me all did the challenge last time I was there and ended up incapacitated or throwing up, coming back out of the restroom, and blear-eyed-ly shouting "it hurts more coming back up than going down"

anything happening this weekend that's free or really cheap?

There's a couple of free Pacific Standard Time events going on. I'm going to this on Sunday:

Alt Proj looking good:

http://www.cinefamily.org/films/alternative-projections-experimental-film-in-los-angeles-1945-1980/

I can report that I found Mayura to be acceptable but unremarkable Indian food. I might go if it was closer and I had a craving, but driving to Culver City for that? No way.

Also, I finally saw Pina and it was good. I reckon I'd be a good German dancer. Also it was my first "twenty-first century" 3D movie! I enjoyed that.

Next week's Alt Proj looks great, actually. I might make that one if I can. I haven't seen a fair few of those films, but the Pat O'Neill, Fred Worden and David Wilson (pre-Jurassic Technology CalArts film) pieces are all straight fire.

Cool!

"Venice Pier" is great. I would love to see a print of that again but I am not going to make that show.

i am... staying in and watching it's garry shandling's show on dvd. it's not pst or cinefamily, but it's got a similar sense of the absurd.

admrl (or anyone else) do you know if any of those culver city galleries are by-appointment-only? planning on doing some gallery-hopping next weekend.

donna rouge, Saturday, 21 January 2012 23:48 (1 year ago) Permalink

It depends on the gallery, I think. Most of them have open hours during the week and have appointments on the weekend. I admire your appetite for art and culture, I'm too fucking exhausted to make half of the stuff you do! What's the secret?

speaking of culver city, this is opening tonight:

Oh while I am on this thread I have the following question.

When I am driving along the 110 thru Highland Park into South Pasadena, I can see people running and cycling along the bed of the Arroyo Seco. I wanna ride my bike down there, does anyone know how/where you get in???

Also - any good recs. bike routes in Northeast/Eastside LA would be most welcome.

Here's the whole flight as I saw it:

I was trying to follow it close up and lost it on the final run to the target, so I didn't see the finale and don't think I got it on video. Haven't looked at my footage yet.

i forget whether i mentioned re:composition here -- i definitely posted about it on facebook.

LOS ANGELES (January 18, 2012) - Coming up next week, SCI-Arc hosts the Los Angeles showing of the Kaleidoscope of Pacific Standard Time (K-PST)’s RE:COMPOSITION, a two-city thematic program of four new performances dedicated to the liberating spirit of California-native John Cage, in honor of his centenary in 2012.

Conceived and produced by independent curator Julie Lazar, RE:COMPOSITION considers how current compositional practices are enabling artists in a variety of disciplines to re-conceive and reconstitute aspects of their art production.

RE:COMPOSITION will run in Los Angeles for two nights only, with the same program presented on Friday, Jan 27 and Saturday, Jan 28 from 8-10pm.

Did you see Anthony Bourdain Layover Los Angeles? sort of interesting, even if he didn't go much East of Atwater or South of Koreatown.

so the zola jesus/EMA thing is in march but this week's first fridays at NHM features the soft moon and light asylum (haven't heard former, not crazy about latter) and a performance by julia holter (who i <3)

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Monday, 30 January 2012 23:42 (1 year ago) Permalink

Saw Julia Holter at the Welcome Inn Time Machine thing in Eagle Rock yesterday. Playing a little Korg synth in a couple James Tenney pieces. Overall I liked the show, but there was a whole lotta nothing between the occasional somethings.
