The guy killed by the guy randomly shooting at cars in Hollywood was a good friend of my co-worker. So crazy.

oh geez :/

Changing the subject...who has eaten somewhere good and interesting recently? I need a resto rec, can be anywhere from hole in the wall to swanky. I was running down the J Gold list but actually found it a bit limiting and overly familiar.

Im going to the gorbals tomorrow which I hope is good.. I can report back.

Scottish and Jewish food, yeah - it's like they knew I was coming.

How about any of these from J Gold - Akasha, Kiriko, Mayura?

i ate half a pig's head there (and the eye)

omar little, Friday, 20 January 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

have you been to ramen jinya

omar little, Friday, 20 January 2012 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

I really liked the food at Palate, and actually thought it was kind of awesome that it was on Auto Row in Glendale. Pretty old, bourgie crowd though.

Speaking of which - we have this new-ish Italian place Maximiliano in Highland Park and it seems to attract the strangest people. I do see Marc Maron there a lot, though. It is Andre Guerrero (Oinkster) and the food is good, a little too homestyle at times but tasty. But the people are WEIRD.

xp-no, tell me

Cool, I put it on the ARList. I don't have a good noodle place.

Seconding this. I've driven by the place enough times, so I finally check it out. Good food there.

Chimu in downtown is astonishingly good, but I heard that they're in the middle of moving to a better location?

It's moving? I thought it just closed. It was good. Delicious lomo saltado

jinya is good (not amazing, but solid). the studio city one has verrry long waits sometimes.

my offer still stands for a wine/cheese/nibbly things fap. preferably next month, when i'll have more money.

nom is right. oxtail poutine ftw. my only complaint when i went there was that after the small plates we ordered an entree-ish piece of steak and it took forever to come out (and wasn't much meat for the price).

Mo Chica in Mercado La Paloma is same people/similar menu.

Head chef Zarate though isn't there - he's been busy with Picca over on the west side.

Some really amazing Indian restaurants just next to Cerritos on Pioneer Blvd (technically in Artesia)

As an alternate, you can always go to Sanuki No Sato in Gardena and get the udon.

Still I'm vaguely pleased that Orochon Ramen is opening up a new location in Burbank just up the street from me. I'm a little suspicious about the whole stunt "super spicy" ramen.

It's pretty good ramen if you don't want to torture yourself. Buncha friends and a couple people around me all did the challenge last time I was there and ended up incapacitated or throwing up, coming back out of the restroom, and blear-eyed-ly shouting "it hurts more coming back up than going down"

anything happening this weekend that's free or really cheap?

There's a couple of free Pacific Standard Time events going on. I'm going to this on Sunday:

Alt Proj looking good:

http://www.cinefamily.org/films/alternative-projections-experimental-film-in-los-angeles-1945-1980/

I can report that I found Mayura to be acceptable but unremarkable Indian food. I might go if it was closer and I had a craving, but driving to Culver City for that? No way.

Also, I finally saw Pina and it was good. I reckon I'd be a good German dancer. Also it was my first "twenty-first century" 3D movie! I enjoyed that.

My father and mother have closed the factory (admrl), Saturday, 21 January 2012 23:23 (twelve years ago) link

Next week's Alt Proj looks great, actually. I might make that one if I can. I haven't seen a fair few of those films, but the Pat O'Neill, Fred Worden and David Wilson (pre-Jurassic Technology CalArts film) pieces are all straight fire.

Cool!

"Venice Pier" is great. I would love to see a print of that again but I am not going to make that show.
