More thoughtful and coherent and less mean-spirited criticisms of recent Jane/Joshua postings (uh, not to mention "Is it really possibly to love 150 albums that came out in a single year?") here:

im sorry he found it meanspirited -- i thought it was meanspirited that jane dark thinks t.i. isnt even at keak da sneak status but criticizing other critics is mean while criticizing artists is a bold heroic job for cultural warriors

Hercules and the Love Affair
C.f. McAlmont, this kind of capital 'S' Singing from a capital 'S' Singer always seems like a good idea on paper. Otherwise this is just Faze Action all over again, no?

maybe i dont 'get' faze action but waht

Cut Copy
This is New Pop revivalism, essentially--the next logical step from the interminable postpunk revival, but drawing on New Pop's wetter side--OMD, China Crisis. Nice blurry/yearn-y sound. Will anyone care in a year?

surely not as much as they care about grime!

choom gangsta (deej), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:13 (fifteen years ago) link

you have a mean spirit

So by my analogy mainstream rap is and has been for a little while now at its own equivalent to the hair metal era: beyond-parody videos, horrible shrill sonics. That sounds just about right from where my ears are sat, especially in re. the dominant mersh-rap sound of portentous digi-synth fanfares and lumbering beats, that brittle blare that seems pre-degraded to 128kbps mp3 or ring-tone level, as purveyed by your T.I.s and Young Jeezys.)

borderline jim derogatis here

i enjoy a spirited conversation

choom gangsta (deej), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:19 (fifteen years ago) link

i think its weird that simon r. wants to rewind 'poptimism' to the point where he basically is parroting jim derogatis

choom gangsta (deej), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:24 (fifteen years ago) link

(does Chuck really think there were 124 albums superior to Vampire Weekend released last year?)

Guffaw! The very idea!!

Lurker of Challops (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 09:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I suppose the H&LA = Faze Action equation is based on the notion that H&LA are to early house what Faze Action were to disco (arty revivalist rather than straightforward revivalist - which would be, i dunno, the DJ T album maybe).

b/c obv they sound nothing alike.

Although the comment implies it's a put down it's almost more a compliment: Faze Action could claim to be, if not the first, then among the first people to properly revive that aspect of disco in a serious way. H&LA don't feel that "groundbreaking" (last word in scare quotes cos obv all this stuff is primarily revivalist), and more just a really nice combination and blending of different ideas (though I could basically live with just the the first four tracks, subbing the Club Mix of "Blind" for the original).

anyways if I recall sr really liked the first Faze Action album.

I'm relieved that he's trying to be cautious in his discussions of his own increasing conservatism w/r/t the structure of his tastes (not so much the specific choices but his move away from pan-genre hedonism, the "scenius" of yore etc.). Too many people who go through this shift spend their entire time basically saying "it's not me, it's music in (insert this year)!"

Tim F, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 10:44 (fifteen years ago) link

i think what bothered me most about the rap thing tho was the 'its like hair metal in 2008!!' awful parallels more than just him not being into it. gold plated phooey gangsta rap, whatever that quote was.

opinions4usic (deej), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 10:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah any comparisons of anything to hair metal (unless done by people who were totally into hair metal) are just rong.

"Livin' A Lie" did make me think of "When I See You Smile" (great song!) for some reason.

Tim F, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 11:00 (fifteen years ago) link

It's the inverse of "x was our punk". Lazy thinking no matter how well it's backed up.

Tim F, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 11:01 (fifteen years ago) link

do you people seriously actively keep up with the reynolds blog? that is the most o_O thing in this thread yet

A lot of gangsta rap has had me thinking about Nugent and lesser lights for a while: still kinda good, in a quaint way now (Tiffany lampin)

dow, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago) link

But "pattern recognition gets us all in the end," as Jane D observed, before retiring from (professional) music writing.

You should! The title track in particular should be a much more widely renouned standard than it is.
