Gerry Read has been on one recently, really into his 12"s on Fourth Wave.

Wicked mix here too: http://www.xlr8r.com/podcast/2012/01/gerry-read

DJ Q Brandy & Coke on the way out on Local Action in the near future. Can't wait.

you know, i don't know if i've ever seen a Mexicans With Guns mention on ilm, but Ceremony is super dope.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:38 (2 years ago) Permalink

If you're into your lowkey beat tape stuff.

You mean witch house? Heh. Sounds great, I look forward to the release.

Kuedo's Sinking in the Datatank Mix

I expected this mix to be really rewarding to me but I'm just not feeling it. Track selection is fairly 'meh', aside from the obvious selections, and the mixing didn't really add anything.

The Palace tune(s?) upthread is outstanding though. I never really get out anymore, but at least I can imagine what it would sound like on a proper system.

viborg, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:59 (2 years ago) Permalink

That Kuedo mix is very mellow compared to some of his bits but then it is meant for a bookshop. His Fact mix from last year was maybe my favourite: http://www.factmag.com/2011/10/03/fact-mix-288-kuedo/

Photonz has another carnival sized rave banger on the way soon:

http://youtu.be/Dn6IjG1HT-k

Really into his 12" on Principle that already dropped this year.

jimitheexploder, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:43 (2 years ago) Permalink

You mean witch house

uh

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:46 (2 years ago) Permalink

lol don't worry I think it was a joke ;)

Glad people are feeling the Torus bits so far, we've had some good feedback so far. You can't beat some mellow beats once in a while.

jimitheexploder, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:49 (2 years ago) Permalink

mellow beats 4ever

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 20:04 (2 years ago) Permalink

NO JOKE, man. Witch house is nothing to laugh about.

viborg, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:02 (2 years ago) Permalink

But seriously, isn't Balam Acab/Clams Casino sometimes considered 'witch house'? The Torus doesn't sound that far off, and I mean that in a good way.

viborg, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:03 (2 years ago) Permalink

Balam Acab is too pretty to be witch house. Clams Casino is cloud rap without the rap.

Number None, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:09 (2 years ago) Permalink

Nah Balam Acab kinda got unearthed by witch house heads but I don't ever feel like he was witch house. He wasn't very gothic or dark he just shared a spaced out vibe and appeared at the same time. Clams Casino is just a hip-hop space cadet.

jimitheexploder, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:13 (2 years ago) Permalink

Oh yeah OP 'The Hope' by Scuba is on the way pretty soon it seems, since I just got the promo thru my inbox while typing the last message.

the Machinedrum track that Azealia Banks stole for her latest buzz track just came out and is a lot better without her:

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:22 (2 years ago) Permalink

well she didn't "steal" it but i agree

Number None, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:25 (2 years ago) Permalink

Yeah well thats a no brainer.

In other news Guido has some sweet tracks up for free DL on his soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/guidoproductions/

MikeQ's 12" on Fade To Mind is insane.

Mala is on one

Gerry REad gets housey

jimitheexploder, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:28 (2 years ago) Permalink

lol didn't mean literally "stole", should have thought a little before writing that

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:29 (2 years ago) Permalink

lol I think we got what you mean. She rapped on it. Do you reckon she'll do a mixtape before an album? Where we get to hear Lone and Machinedrum bringing the hype before her album is nowt but Diplo impressions... I'd kinda like that, I mean she'd at least get Lone & Machinedrum tracks out there to the odd geek who looks at the production notes who hasn't heard them before.

Accccccccccccciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid

jimitheexploder, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:46 (2 years ago) Permalink

The 3 Gerry Read 12s on Fourth Wave have been really good. I think my fave one is "Untitled" from the first one. That and the Lorca remix I'm playing a lot. Lorca's Moments is just lovely anyway.

mmmm, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 23:01 (2 years ago) Permalink

Photonz has another carnival sized rave banger on the way soon:

http://youtu.be/Dn6IjG1HT-k

Really into his 12" on Principle that already dropped this year.

― jimitheexploder

^^ true that. remarkable launch for Principe (portuguese for prince, fyi). the dj marfox 12" (eu sei quem sou) it's kuduro at its finest...

on a side note : you should really listen to sangue de cristo (photonz + tiago). a little more on the balearic side of things, but great notwithstanding.

rusty_allen, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 23:12 (2 years ago) Permalink

Nah Balam Acab kinda got unearthed by witch house heads but I don't ever feel like he was witch house. He wasn't very gothic or dark he just shared a spaced out vibe and appeared at the same time.

the only thing you can call him on are the super stock 808 drum sounds. but he's on some other shit with his vocal samples & structures, wander/wonder was really pretty and underrated.

i hear that torus stuff as being part of the shlohmo/lapalux/beat scene tip.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 23:17 (2 years ago) Permalink

Yeah Torus to us at least is on that beat scene tip. SR have always been into that vibe.

I rally need to dig into Photonz and those guys more. the DJ Marfox 12" has hardly been off my turn table since I got it. Big up on the suggestions Rusty.

GERRY READ! favourite new music of 2012 so far - that photonz track really good too - loved Aquarian Ball from a few year ago but had always sort of assumed it was a total one off

oh yeah, meant to say i'm utterly addicted to Terror Danjah's "You Make Me Feel".

i quite like it but it's kind of lol how terror danjah gave a 5-year-old track to hyperdub. it was originally on this comp

the carmen reece 'hey lover' mj cole remix on that is such a classic

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 14:11 (2 years ago) Permalink

Yeah I kinda like that.

Guido stuck it in his fact mix the other day too: http://www.factmag.com/2012/01/30/fact-mix-314-guido/

Well nice, can't get enough Guido.

I didn't know that Terror track was an oldie, I never coped that comp. It deserves another outing to be fair.

that Joker remix is so out there. i like all the individual pieces, might need to listen to it a few more times to see if they all fit together

Tri Angle are really hit'n'miss. They do have a way with hype tho. So its no suprise they signed Evian Christ and Vessel recently. Vessel is the hit...

jimitheexploder, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 22:12 (2 years ago) Permalink

I love this remix. Feels like an early contender for 'best of 2012.' Great male vocal bout phones and so forth w very cool sample work and bassline.

Any impressions on the new Preditah EP? I like some of the sounds so far, but it's a bit uneventful for me.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 16:52 (2 years ago) Permalink

"Circles" is the best of the bunch, I'd say.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 18:33 (2 years ago) Permalink

Circles is a banger, been waiting an age for that to hit wax.

Objekt Cactus just dropped, it's a big'un.

I heard Livity Sound Live this weekend w/ Peverelist, Kowton & Asusu. It was something else. Picked up Livity Sound #003 by Pev from Idle Hands too: http://hardwax.com/65112/ love it.

yup - are you in town?

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:04 (2 years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I thought it was funny that we both listen to and make the same general kinds of music in the same city and haven't ever met.

Unless you hang out at the DJ shop or know Wyatt Agard, I used to go to his Ableton classes.

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:09 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah that is crazy given what a small town this is, although i don't go out to a ton of shows/dj nights unless i'm playing or a friend is. i might have met wyatt once through my friend nate, but don't know him.

we should hang though, lemme know if you have a gig coming up or whatever.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:22 (2 years ago) Permalink

I pretty much gave up deejaying when I started to get serious about making beats again, I've got the Traktor setup but its been gathering dust for a while.

Need to get back on that horse soon, I guess.

At risk of turning this thread into my blog, anyone listened to the NeferTT release on Hotflush?

I've been trying to figure out who it might be, Falty DL, Machinedrum, maybe Boxcutter?

Pyramel is cool.

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 13 September 2012 01:13 (2 years ago) Permalink

It's a duo i think? Falty DL is definitely involved though

Number None, Thursday, 13 September 2012 12:33 (2 years ago) Permalink

I could definitely see this being Falty DL and Boxcutter, sounds like a halfway point between their styles.

forget what counts as dance and what counts as bobbins and what counts as bass, but a friend of mine who spins in the city a lot and constantly is putting stuff together but until recently hasn't bothered putting anything out got a track on this top billing comp. http://topbillinmusic.bandcamp.com/album/bass-bonez-compiled-by-flipperi-2

haven't gotten a chance to spin the whole thing, but his joint is 'Always Got My Back' and I've been enjoying it / think it's good enough to call folks attn to.

Having EDM artists colonize your scene has a way of making people a little musically conservative, even Ikonika is talking about listening to Legowelt. Kryptic Minds, Untold, lots of people.

The other options are what? White boy juke? Trap? Endless Burial ripoffs?

the late great, Saturday, 19 January 2013 17:37 (1 year ago) Permalink

When I started the first partisans thread I wanted it to be for everything, then a separate thread was requested. So its fine by me.

I'm fighting a perverse desire to start a rolling EDM thread.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 20 January 2013 14:02 (1 year ago) Permalink

If I recall there were originally impassioned pleas to merge the bobbins and partisans thread (since it is, y'know, pointless segregation), but the ILM massive (appropriately being dance music partisans about it) weren't having it.

Anyways, I just need somewhere to post this!

formerly EDB (ed.b), Sunday, 20 January 2013 16:20 (1 year ago) Permalink

Since I'm the creator of bobbins 2013 thread, I declare that you can post "partisan stuff" there. No need to make a new thread.
