LOL just noticed that the gurl in front of me in the bus is doing the leggings, foofy boots, croppped sweater thing. The one thing saving her (a bit) us that said leggings seem to be made of scuba suite-like material (?) And are therefore v opaque.

Ugh typos dumb phone.
Can we introduce jeggings to this thread? I am unsure how I feel about them, but I HATE the word jeggings. As much as grellow, even.
― rocognise gnome (remy bean), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:47 (twelve years ago) link
The word sucks, yeah. Last week I saw "treggings" used which I guess was supposed to be trouser leggings. :/
― ☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:51 (twelve years ago) link
redundant, surely

― beachville, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:53 (twelve years ago) link
they sound like medieval torture devices.

Grellow is a terrible word.
Jeggings are tighter with a very narrow leg opening--cut like leggings, styled like jeans in denim-looking fabric--whereas pajama jeans are cut like jeans but made of cotton/poly/spandex and thus stretchy and soft.
I have a pair of Levis that are made of pajama jeans-esque material and srsly they are A+++.
― gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:01 (twelve years ago) link
Really? I like the way jeans look, but my wife likes comfortable clothing. Those Levis sound like they might be a good compromise. Is there a specific style or model number or whatever?
― beachville, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:08 (twelve years ago) link
Saw a girl (late teens or early twenties) rocking this look at the weekend and her leggings were on INSIDE-OUT so you could see the label as well as her bum.
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:12 (twelve years ago) link
They are called 512 (tm) Perfectly Slimming (for straight sizes) or Shaping (for plus sizes) and they come in various colors and leg widths.
― gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:16 (twelve years ago) link
NYDJ sells good looking pajama jeans (their jeggings are crazy soft) but they are also $$$$.

The thicker and more opaque leggings get, the less I hate them. I remember some years ago, though, maybe it was before the leggings "comeback"? When there weren't a lot of versions on the market yet so the young fashion things were wearing tights. As pants. This is probably where my real disdain for the whole thing comes from. And now thanks to the lazy and unobservant people described in this thread, we're right back where we started.
― It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:43 (twelve years ago) link
I don't know, some of the college girls I see near my office building put way too much effort into the rest of their clothes and accessories to really be THAT lazy and unobservant about their tights. I'm fairly certain its a distinct choice in some cases.

Perving by crepes is exactly why I'm so embarrassed for women in translucent leggings. They're basically naked, which would be just mildly unfortunate except for people who actively enjoy someone else's possibly-accidental state of undress.
― It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:58 (twelve years ago) link
Oh come on how can this possibly be accidental?!

― beachville, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:03 (twelve years ago) link
No no, that last one prob isn't accidental, obv. Earlier posts were about people in more worn versions that you could see through.
Also frankly the schoolmarm in me can't remotely fathom why anyone would wear these if they realized men everywhere are looking at their asses this way. But I'm a hundred years old and headed for a convent so ymmv.

I mean, I have never worn tight black leggings, but my sense is that when you put on a garment you have some vague idea of how form-fitting it is. Not to mention that you perhaps own a mirror, or have friends, or any number of other ways that you might be informed of what it is you're wearing and what it looks like. Not to say I haven't worn a few things that looked way stupider than I thought they did, but it'd be kind of hard to wear something that hugs each and every curve of flesh and not just feel that, right? Or are they so tight that they cut off circulation and shut down nerve endings? I dunno.
xpost oh okay, that makes sense then
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:05 (twelve years ago) link
I think girls wear them becuase they're comfortable tbh! Not nec because they are so form-fitting specifically.
― It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link
I'm guessing the cameltoe in that last picture is entirely accidental?
― Rapper rejoins fat man's co-op (NickB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:08 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, I think you're right that there's a difference between "these are worn out and became see-through" and "these are really tight and form-fitting," it's just that the latter, in combination with the Uggs (and, yes, usually the long sweater) is a trend right now. So I think the people wearing it know what it looks like, having seen it in magazines/TV/friends, and are totally going for it. But I might just be rationalizing because I think it's so pretty.
But, I mean, I have long been a totally indefensible sucker for Uggs in a way that I can't explain. I think I love the incredible bottom-heavy imbalanced-ness of them, it's this awkward oversizing that I can only compare to Megaman, or maybe to just the 2000s general love of the incongruous join, the massive meeting the miniscule. It's like a LOLcat fashion.

I'm sorry but I have a really hard time believing all the girls prancing around in leggings worn or stretched so thin that you can literally see their ass cheeks are doing so intentionally. I think most know they're tight obv but not transparent. I think maybe they since they get dressed indoors where the lighting is diff they don't realize exactly how much is on display.

Maybe - I still think they are a trend because of the appearance/aesthetic - but would you agree that you'd have to be aware of the form-fittingness if you were wearing them? Again, I haven't worn a lot of these things myself. (i'm male btw)

do nudists even exist anymore? when my grandpa died, my grandma tried to date a little bit and one of her dates took her to a nudist colony, just like in that golden girls episode. the 70s were a wonderful time.

Long sweater would be fine!!! Looooong sweater. One that covers YOUR ASS, FOR INSTANCE. Also that is not camel-toe, that is a NORMAL HUMAN CROTCH, and that is exactly why the too-short top is a problem.

― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:14 (twelve years ago) link
Yes, the reason this look works with the long sweater is that there is something left to the imagination, it isn't all on display. Its like boots and big, baggy sweater are v formless but theres just this hint of shapeliness between the calves and mid-thigh that sets it all off. I don't know, really trying to describe why I like this without sounding pervy and its kinda difficult.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:14 (twelve years ago) link

I sort of like the giant moon boot shape in contrast w a close-fitting leg, it's space-suity from the future and/or kind of a super-hero look that I can dig. Those clunky video-game boots are out there, and if people like that look THEY SHOULD GO GET SOME from their local techno goth-serving emporium.
Uggs are just slovenly.
― It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:15 (twelve years ago) link
Sometimes though, the long sweater comes off a bit like they were in a rush and forgot to put pants on.

I think the leggings with sheer-ish cut out panels by the knees or wherever are pretty cool. Lots of stuff has “perforations” now, but nobody has made cool patterns with them yet.
