Ga'an is sick

This isn't on bandcamp but it is free and also AWESOME

The Runnies are a rock'n roll organ trio hailing from Chicago. Fronted by vocal extraordinaire Mary McKane. Their sound is gnarly, the beats are totally slammin, and the leads are freaky-deaky.

The band just told me they have their page up now. They are something special. My #6 album of 2011!

Ever crave a band that's so downtuned that you can actually track the motion of the strings and feel the vibrations in your internal organs? Chile's At Devil Dirt has a doozy for you. It's hard to believe it's just two guys, as their debut self-titled album has a mammoth sludgy fuzz sound worthy of Electric Wizard, Goatsnake, Kyuss and Floor/Torche, with some pretty inventive psychedelic vocals with harmonies. On "Rocknrolla" they even bring to mind T. Rex!

This band from Argentina (instrumental stoner/psych) is a late discovery:

I upload stuff to bandcamp. Older stuff - guitar based sadcore or jangle pop. Newer stuff - more new wave. Most of it is free if you want it.

http://lingereffect.bandcamp.com/

Some great Kraut-ish jams from Indirect:

http://indirect.bandcamp.com/album/2010-direct-from-w-k-a-f-compilation

(They aren't free/name your price so I won't link them, but Fang Wizard has a fun album from TeenBeat available for download on bandcamp, and there are a couple of great post-punk-type singles by Friends for dirt cheap from the Lucky Number label on the site as well.)

This being the hub for all things Steven R. Smith (formerly of Mirza, Thuja, Hala Straana and solo artist). His latest OLD SKETE is a must-listen for rustic drone types.

And thanks for the kind words WRT The Rowell Incident upthread. There will probably be some more solo synth/drone stuff going up in the nearish future.

I'm listening to the Airs record that I linked to up above as "shoegaze with black metal elements." There is no black metal in this that I can ascertain. So if that scared you off, have no fear – this is pretty straight up staring at footwear.

i did hear something about limited streaming, i wonder what the limit is (apparently haven't hit it yet for anything).

lil urbane (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:17 (3 months ago) Permalink

Wondering how much these anti-streaming artists were making from radio airplay back in the day. I'd guess it was actually less.

Maybe this is inappropriate, but my band has a name-your-price mini album out ATM https://discozhivago.bandcamp.com/

nuumerykah (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:25 (3 months ago) Permalink

The limit is for the mobile app only, no?

Dinsdale, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 16:27 (3 months ago) Permalink

oh, that would make sense.

lil urbane (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 16:36 (3 months ago) Permalink

is there a good "beginner's guide to using bandcamp" tutorial out there for first-time users from the artist side? i have used bandcamp plenty as a consumer/listener but i don't know anything from the other side and i need to get the ball rolling.

groundless round (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 16:45 (3 months ago) Permalink

it's super easy, you just upload wav files and artwork and type words. they walk you through it.

lil urbane (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 16:58 (3 months ago) Permalink

they have to be wav files? see i didn't know that.
i don't know anything!

groundless round (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 17:29 (3 months ago) Permalink

any lossless format - wav, aif, flac. then they automatically encode the compression versions (mp3s etc).

lil urbane (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 17:32 (3 months ago) Permalink

their Help section seems comprehensive enough
https://bandcamp.com/help/

Dinsdale, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 17:33 (3 months ago) Permalink

oh ok, i didn't realize that you can control/remove the streaming limit:

By default, fans can play tracks on Bandcamp only a few times in full, after which they get a dialog prompting them to buy. As the artist, you can up this limit, or remove it entirely, from your Profile page (you of course always get unlimited plays of your own tracks, but for the curious, here’s what the purchase prompt looks like). When a fan makes a purchase, they get unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app for Android, iOS and Sonos, an optional download in a variety of high-quality formats including lossless, and of course the satisfaction of directly supporting an artist they love.

lil urbane (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 17:36 (3 months ago) Permalink

i'll gather my materials and see what i can get done by myself. ty!
