you know, some doggies do

santiago is SOOOO puppy-ish, i think if you treat them like puppies (lots of picking up and cuddling) they keep acting like puppies

it probably helps that as a miniature he is going to look like a puppy, forever

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:23 (twelve years ago) link

nice! Well, Max will be 5 in November but he's still frisky and happy. Andrew & I are rather childish people who are happy on the ground giving belly rubs (he goes NUTS if you rub his arm pits! We call it "the arm thing" as in "Max, do you want to do the arm thing?") so hopefully we'll keep him young.

eternal puppies are the best, gordon is still v much a pup

I basically want to leave work and go cuddle, arggghhh

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:30 (twelve years ago) link

this is true for me every day, sometimes i feel embarrassed because my doggy is basically like a living teddy bear for me

cuddling the puppy is the first thing i do when i wake up, the first thing i do when i get home from work, and the last thing i do before i go to bed

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

i am cuddling my puppy RIGHT NOW haha suckers

;_;

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:40 (twelve years ago) link

My husband & I have different schedules, so every morning when I wake up I pick Max up off the floor and tuck him into my spot. Bugger spends 90% of his day being cuddled or sleeping, life's not so bad for old Max!
3 more hours til I see his waggy little tail.

Does any other dog that y'all have do a kind of breathy panting thing when you rub him? Max goes whole hog, it's pretty funny. Hard to describe over text, sadly. But it's so intense and adorable.

I didn't realize that yr dog was called gordito and I was trying to figure out what 'gordito pants' were

waaahhhh

I want a puppy

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:28 (twelve years ago) link

he was crawling on his belly toward me with his tail wagging but then he suddenly yawned and rolled over on his back and start wiggling (wiggling on his back in hot sunshine being one of his favorite hobbies), i caught him midyawn and pre-roll

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:30 (twelve years ago) link

Awww. I want to rub all the bellies. and santiago and gordito are great dog names! Max mostly becomes 'The Maxster' (and I am 'the Mom') which is - in my justification - ever so slightly less creepy than me just calling myself Mom.

Mr Veg and I already have our dog name picked out, for the imaginary dog that we will one day own

his name will be Stormageddon Dark Lord of All, Stormy for short. (Doctor Who ref bc we is NERRRDS)

I want 2 St Bernards, and I'll name the other one Woolla.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:34 (twelve years ago) link

LOL the nerdier the better, IMO. Though I tried realllly hard for 'Killer' because he's such a little cotton ball, but I was vetoed :(

i'm planning to get santiago a girlfriend so he's not so lonely when i'm not home, was thinking of naming her BELLA BELLY because dachshund bellies are the best

Adorable!

I've think I've decided that, unless I end up going to school outside of the country, I might get a french bulldog puppy a year from now.

Sort of curious as to what, and what commitment, is actually involved in raising one.

EDB, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

A friend of mine has one. He has trouble breathing

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 19:18 (twelve years ago) link

yeah they are cute but i'm not sure how i feel about the ethics of owning such an over-bred dog, i've heard they have trouble giving birth too

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

then again i own a dachshund and 1 in 4 develop spine problems so i'm not one to talk

my inlaws had a mastiff (he died last year, sad sad sad) but he was about as big as that first photo and I swear a week later he was up to my knee. Those big doggies grow like freaking mushrooms!

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

I'm familiar with the health issues of French bulldogs (along with all other breeds I might consider - but really how many breeds are there that don't have some sort of significant health or other issue?), I'm just curious about what sort of time, money, and energy is needed in actually raising a dog.

EDB, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:24 (twelve years ago) link

time = not quite comparable to a child but getting there

money = so, so much money. like $1000/yr or more

energy = actually find dogs give you energy rather than the reverse

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

i guess the difference between my dog and a child is i can leave him at home unsupervised, but when i am with him it is like having a toddler around who has no hands.

the money thing might be on the high side, i tend to pay out the nose for medical expenses cause i'm a sucker (it's not good enough to remove weird bumps, i have to get them biopsied too) but then again i don't pay any kennel fees and some of my friends pay like $20/day because they don't want their little buddies sitting bored at home all day by themselves

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:34 (twelve years ago) link

see I'm not willing to get a dog til a) at least one of us can be at home with it and b) we have a big enough backyard for running and frollicking. which sounds more and more like a crazy utopian dream

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

if you get a little enough dog you don't need a big backyard, but yeah, leaving them at home by themselves is so ;_;

i guess at one extreme there are people who get like chemo and organ transplants and super-expensive doggy day care for their dogs and at the other extreme there's probably people who spend $0 on their dogs, just tie 'em up w/ a rope and feed them leftover human food

get one of these five pound beasts, they'll get like lost and disoriented in a 500 sq ft apartment
