J3ff T., Saturday, 7 January 2012 06:45 (2 years ago) Permalink

One of my most-played albums of 2011, instrumental/psych/space/kraut/doom. Sabbath meets Hawkwind meets Neu!, very catchy and incredibly concise for a bunch of psychedelic instrumentals.

Yeah, and I should mention that this doesn't have to be just a list thread, people should feel totally free to post their thoughts on stuff they've downloaded. I'm listening to the Melodien album right now (Melodie), and it's GREAT.

I should probably clarify that it's DARK, heavy psychedelic prairie rock. Reviewed their latest release for Decibel, but it's one of those weird outliers that they occasionally cover, not actually metal.

The Runnies are a rock'n roll organ trio hailing from Chicago. Fronted by vocal extraordinaire Mary McKane. Their sound is gnarly, the beats are totally slammin, and the leads are freaky-deaky.

The band just told me they have their page up now. They are something special. My #6 album of 2011!

Ever crave a band that's so downtuned that you can actually track the motion of the strings and feel the vibrations in your internal organs? Chile's At Devil Dirt has a doozy for you. It's hard to believe it's just two guys, as their debut self-titled album has a mammoth sludgy fuzz sound worthy of Electric Wizard, Goatsnake, Kyuss and Floor/Torche, with some pretty inventive psychedelic vocals with harmonies. On "Rocknrolla" they even bring to mind T. Rex!

I upload stuff to bandcamp. Older stuff - guitar based sadcore or jangle pop. Newer stuff - more new wave. Most of it is free if you want it.

Some great Kraut-ish jams from Indirect:

http://indirect.bandcamp.com/album/2010-direct-from-w-k-a-f-compilation

(They aren't free/name your price so I won't link them, but Fang Wizard has a fun album from TeenBeat available for download on bandcamp, and there are a couple of great post-punk-type singles by Friends for dirt cheap from the Lucky Number label on the site as well.)

heey Cuneiform records offering anniversary name your price "albums of 2014" comp, featuring tracks from Richard Pinhas, Mary Halvorson, Rob Mazurek and other fringe ppl!
https://cuneiformrecords.bandcamp.com/album/cuneiform-turns-30-the-albums-of-2014

Cuneiform – in 2014, its 30th year – features about 400 titles in its catalogue. These releases cover a broad stylistic range, from experimental rock to avant-progressive, avant-jazz and jazz improvisation, electronic/ambient/noise, and much much more. From classical minimalism to chamber rock, Rock in Opposition to Weird Americana, jazz/pop to jazztronica, Cuneiform has explored a wide world of cutting edge music and especially, music beyond genre and genres-yet-to-be-defined. The common denominator of all releases on this uncommon, artist-friendly label is the singularity and consistent high-quality of its artists. Cuneiform's innovative composers and improvisors create music true to their unique visions and their unfettered visions often defy, reshape, and transcend prior genre boundaries, transforming the musical landscape of jazz, or rock, or New Music/contemporary classical for generations to come.

Cuneiform released 20 albums of high-quality, genre-defiant music in 2014, the largest number of albums we’ve ever released in a single year! They range from jazz/post-jazz/beyond genre (Anthony Pirog; Dylan Ryan/Sand; Raoul Bjorkenheim/Ecstasy; The Microscopic Septet; Led Bib; Ideal Bread; Joel Harrison; The Ed Palermo Big Band; Thumbscrew[Halvorson/Formanek/Fujiwara]); to avant-rock/Rock in Opposition/electroc-ambient-noise (remastered reissues of Roger Trigaux’s Present; Richard Pinhas & Oren Ambarchi; Richard Pinhas & Yoshida Tatsuya; Mats/Morgan; Sonar; Jonathan Badger; Happy Family).
