i could teach that class

La Lechera, Friday, 6 January 2012 18:11 (2 years ago) Permalink

re: talk to anyone anywhere

1) who signs up for that class? how many students? ages? gender distribution?
2) what does alan salami do to break the ice in the most socially tense room in chicago?
3) what do the students think of the class after they take it? do they feel more able to talk to strangers?

La Lechera, Friday, 6 January 2012 18:19 (2 years ago) Permalink

i bet changing your name to "alan salami" is a good way to start conversations.

q: 2) what does alan salami do to break the ice in the most socially tense room in chicago?
a: introduces himself "hello, my name is alan salami. alan salami is my name. and if i can go through life with this name, you can learn to talk to people too"

La Lechera, Friday, 6 January 2012 18:29 (2 years ago) Permalink

though most of those conversations will primarily consist of "wait, your name is alan salami?"

there are only seven results for a google image search for "alan salami," and none of them are pictures of a guy

i've wondered about that place. i thought about taking classes there - how to do photoshop, for example.

Would that be worthwhile, do you think?

amanda how do you find out about new music?
i need to find new mp3 blogs that are well-curated. most of my new music sources are dried up.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 6 January 2012 20:42 (2 years ago) Permalink

I'm gonna put my best-of-2011 playlist up on Spotify this weekend. Although it looks like Spotify is missing 11 of the 88 tracks. 12 if you count the "Edge of Glory" radio edit (they have the album version).

Bon Ivoj (jaymc), Friday, 6 January 2012 20:44 (2 years ago) Permalink

hmmm good question
i'm not sure i find out about a lot actively so much as stumble on it? i still have an emusic account so that's my "try something new" allotment for the month, also keeps insane downloading under control.
really i am not an obsessive keeper-upper with stuff. i should probably read a magazine or something.

i was thinking of going to see YOB/Anatomy of Habit at the EB on Wednesday 1/25. should be a good show, but is on a weeknight :-/

La Lechera, Friday, 6 January 2012 20:50 (2 years ago) Permalink

also like i went to that metal ensemble thing at the MCA and saw the awesome harmonium player dude there and then looked him up
totes recommend if you like that sort of thing! (organic/synthy soundscapes that sound inspired by nature)

just fyi by "new stuff" i mean new-to-you stuff, not necessarily new releases

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 6 January 2012 21:13 (2 years ago) Permalink

I've liked this guy lately, he's mostly into Michigan stuff but also branches out. A lot of hardcore, screamy sludgy crusty to whiny and emo. I've found some good tracks there.

oh well new to me, i just go with my <3
what am i in the mood for

for instance, i said that i would enjoy more poppy music this winter to keep me in a good mood and it has been working!

La Lechera, Friday, 6 January 2012 21:22 (2 years ago) Permalink

I ate at Freshii yesterday and they were playing an entire Pitbull album. Excuse meeeee

gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Friday, 6 January 2012 21:24 (2 years ago) Permalink

but i mean you can say "i would enjoy more poppy music" but then how do you know specifically what albums to get?

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 6 January 2012 21:30 (2 years ago) Permalink

i dunno, i think of something i like, and then find more like it
you know how to do this, why are you asking me?

La Lechera, Friday, 6 January 2012 21:33 (2 years ago) Permalink

(not being hostile btw -- just that i know you know how to find stuff you like. you just have to want to look around for it)

La Lechera, Friday, 6 January 2012 21:33 (2 years ago) Permalink

like i read that flying nun book and then have gone down a rabbit hole of flying nun, which has been v enjoyable!
i listen to "crush" by tall dwarfs every single time i get into the car and it's like a ritual now.

boom boom boom boom boom
tap tap tap tap tap
la la la la la la
how does it feel when you find out that everyone LOATHES you?

and then the song is over and i am on my way to my destination

La Lechera, Friday, 6 January 2012 21:35 (2 years ago) Permalink

also lastfm radio stations are good for finding new things, better than pandora because there's more international music ime

La Lechera, Friday, 6 January 2012 21:36 (2 years ago) Permalink

I would like to get back into the habit of exploring music that is not primarily new and buzzed-about stuff, but there is so much of that stuff that I am rarely left wanting. Sometimes I just think, like, what if I am a huge fan of (say) Rickie Lee Jones, and I just don't know it yet?
