The Silent Extreme (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 5 January 2012 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

I kind of dug Section.80, moreso than Shabazz Palaces (which is not at all what I expected to happen going in)

Whiney can't you remove the bookmark and readd it & then it'll be the new title?

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 6 January 2012 00:16 (twelve years ago) link

you know what was great about the thread being called the "rolling snap thread" instead of "rolling hiphop/rap thread" is that googlers stumbling on ILM never clicked on it to share their opinions

The Brainwasher, Friday, 6 January 2012 01:07 (twelve years ago) link

DGainz is a dope producer who also shoots videos around Chicago. I've been subscribed to his fbook feed since this summer, Louie is the best rapper he's worked with by far but there are some really promising kids involved. I actually posted something he did on last year's thread iirc:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhTtDh4iiv4&hd=1

and noz posted another on Fader, which is probably why he's suddenly getting a bunch of tumblr attention.

Regional Thug (D-40), Friday, 6 January 2012 01:11 (twelve years ago) link

I would urge you guys to not think this is all the chi scene is about tho, i feel like there's an abstract perception to outsiders of a 'chicago scene' revolving around the most youtube-visible artists, but this is just one aspect of it.

Mike Will - Est. In 1989 (Last of a Dying Breed)

flopson, Friday, 6 January 2012 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

i should give setbacks another chance. it kinda glazed past me the one time i listened to it.

The Reverend, Friday, 6 January 2012 01:28 (twelve years ago) link

i like the song posted earlier, but i still don't find schoolboy q that engaging a rapper tho.

The Reverend, Friday, 6 January 2012 01:29 (twelve years ago) link

am i the only thinking that jay rock is way way way behind the k. soul & q ?

sisilafami, Friday, 6 January 2012 01:33 (twelve years ago) link

the jay rock record has some jams but for me, schoolboy q's is the best followed by kendrick, although i can see why non-rap fans might prefer the kendrick but it's a bit too arch / ambitious while schoolboy q seems perfectly satisfied making just-rap music

Regional Thug (D-40), Friday, 6 January 2012 01:53 (twelve years ago) link

pretty sure kendrick's album is way more popular among rap fans too, dude. that's a bullshit false dichotomy.

The Reverend, Friday, 6 January 2012 01:56 (twelve years ago) link

also why are being arch or ambitious inherently bad things?

The Reverend, Friday, 6 January 2012 01:57 (twelve years ago) link

you're misunderstanding bro. i'm not talking about how popular they are with rap fans at all; Kendrick is obviously the bigger breakthrough name. I'm just saying for non-rap fans, I think Kendrick is an easier sell.

and being arch and ambitious aren't inherently bad things, they're just not things i tend to look for in rap music very often, personally.

Regional Thug (D-40), Friday, 6 January 2012 02:30 (twelve years ago) link

of course ambitious is a v. broad word to use, but in this case I mean it in the Lupe/BoB sense. I mean, I really like the Kendrick record, but to me its a very very well done version of a kind of rap I usually avoid; the fact that he pulls it off is all the more impressive to me. But end of day, the schoolboy Q is def more in my wheelhouse

Regional Thug (D-40), Friday, 6 January 2012 02:31 (twelve years ago) link

I fuck with Jay Rock. think his debut album was a solid B+, didn't maintain the same tenacity towards the end, but I like him on Strange.

love the Kendrick too. ain't heard Schoolboy Q but now am curious.

Neanderthal, Friday, 6 January 2012 03:19 (twelve years ago) link

oh i think i forgot to mention that whiney sounds ridiculous hating on that action bronson song, it's not a 'hipster mash up' u goofball, hes rapping over standard '80s jukebox music in a 'jackin for beats' style
