i like this and it's better than anything on 1977 (obv) but it's blowing me away exactly as much as "love king" did when it dropped (ie it's not, though it's nice enough and i'll happily listen to it a ton)

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Thursday, 5 January 2012 09:52 (twelve years ago) link

Well that just dampened my anticipation.

Tim F, Thursday, 5 January 2012 10:05 (twelve years ago) link

the second half of this is pretty nice, kinda in the vain of whatever the segue in FMBO/bodywork was called was. the song is kinda autopilot though.

quick brown fox triangle (schlump), Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:35 (twelve years ago) link

kinda tmi at the end

nice wailing guitar solo tho

also, way to go for being rich

"fila" through to "abyss" is an astounding run that easily counteracts whatever flaws it has

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:21 (twelve years ago) link

shawty is da shit through mama is an even more astounding run and plus, has no flaws

tracy mcgr8080 (dayo), Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:25 (twelve years ago) link

the flaws on both those albums are outside those runs (well "mama" is entirely a flaw but whatever)

i'd take "yamaha" alone over anything on L/H

have listened to this three times and besides a nice minute-ish intro it kinda drags and sinks beneath the waves

this is why you are insane

Regional Thug (D-40), Thursday, 5 January 2012 14:32 (twelve years ago) link

As Terius songs go this sounds so formulaic and tossed out in five minutes it feels like I've written it in some kind of lazy parody.

Matt DC, Thursday, 5 January 2012 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

yeah this is a bit slight no doubt, but i really appreciate the overall vibe/style and it's not like a lead single or something so i'm cool with it

k3vin k., Thursday, 5 January 2012 18:55 (twelve years ago) link

Can't disagree that this sounds tossed-off, but isn't that part of his charm a lot of the time? Even his best, most-realized tracks have a just-fucking-around quality to them. My favs are the ones where he sounds like he's just having too much fun to edit himself

Evan R, Thursday, 5 January 2012 18:58 (twelve years ago) link

does anyone know specifically what it is?, i didn't get it from radiokilla & can't quite summon the effort to get involved in the shoe of the month thing. i guess he's working on the next dream record but most of what he does seems to just come out of some kind of last-minute-homework session, so it's interesting to know if it's a song on the record or what

quick brown fox triangle (schlump), Thursday, 5 January 2012 19:34 (twelve years ago) link

it's the first single from The Love IV

huh, okay. there was the kells song also kicking around, maybe that'll be a lil more exciting

exactly. i feel like there are two completely opposite types of dream fans or something

Regional Thug (D-40), Friday, 6 January 2012 03:37 (twelve years ago) link

this song rules, the only weakness is maybe the vocal performance on the voice comes off a bit thin? but definitely a welcome return of grandiose arrangements & fun silly ideas. to me this songwriting is on the level of the upbeat jams of LvM

flopson, Friday, 6 January 2012 05:24 (twelve years ago) link

you call this a grandiose arrangement? really? "sex intelligent" and "she needs my love" and the "love vs money"s are grandiose arrangements, not this.

i love the squelchy bass on this but that's about it for ideas really.

terius' casual, tossed-off side works best when he's writing for other artists ("touch my body" and "so good" spring to mind) but for himself he excels when he's really making an effort to push things out there.

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Friday, 6 January 2012 09:10 (twelve years ago) link

c'mon, something like "mr yeah" was full of hooks and one-liners and quotable wit, this doesn't have a single lyric that doesn't sound like a first-take placeholder

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Friday, 6 January 2012 09:11 (twelve years ago) link

i agree that this isn't up there with the grandiose arrangements of love king but that's exactly why i like it!

tpp, Friday, 6 January 2012 09:12 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah but this just feels so perfuctory, like he can't be bothered to stretch himself, it's about as Terius-by-numbers as you can get. Even the guitar freakout at the end feels like it's there because Terius couldn't think of anything else to do. I don't want to listen to sex jams where it feels like the singer is looking at the clock.

Matt DC, Friday, 6 January 2012 10:02 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think this sounds 'tossed off' at all, and i think your feeling about the guitar part at the end is the same feeling i had about all Terius, which is that after a certain point there's definitely a sense of diminishing returns -- UNLESS the songwriting is there. Which, in this case, I really think it is. I don't think this is particularly 'tossed off' at all, except in the way that often his melodies do seem to come from some kind of improvisational compositional style. but for this most part, this seems like one of his more well-crafted moments

Regional Thug (D-40), Friday, 6 January 2012 10:36 (twelve years ago) link

alright i'm fully behind this now, the hook is just so lush and massive

bob loblaw people (dayo), Sunday, 8 January 2012 03:59 (twelve years ago) link

this isn't like, one of his best 20 songs or anything, but it's got a tune and the production is there, it's an encouraging sign given the majority of his solo shit over the past year and a good song in its own right
