i have a (semi-guilty) love for spazzy, headbanging brostep breakdowns. most of the electronic music that i love is the opposite of this, and i don't seek it out, but it's hilarious and effective. also it becomes amazing if les twins are involved (though i can't see them dancing to a skrillex track; their taste in beats is impeccable, really):

this all seems like lame variations on silly industrial-goth shit that I found ridiculous back in the 80s

lol this actually makes me think I might like this

you can actually hear a pretty direct connection btween the weird rhythmic approach of dubstep & stuff like this (this is a track i heard last time at neo -- contra what i just said, i did actually shazam this one)

Skrillex-brand brostep = video game music + pop-punk melodies + nu-metal breakdowns + "wobbles" + surface familiarity with drill-n-bass era aphex & fat of the land + some superficial elements of drum + bass

yes, me and deej went dancing at this club in my first night in the chi. the cool thing is that everyone there is super into dancing since it's not a "cool" place to be in the first place.

man every skrillex song is really cool until the skronky "dubstep"-y parts

Due to the style of their music lacking a definite genre, they coined the term 'Industrial Jungle Pussy Punk' to describe their music, but later, they denounced the term

I don't get where any and all mention of dubstep comes in. To me this sounds entirely like ca. 2006 blog house, albeit with hints of Ruskoesque midtone wobble. I mean, is it that you can't latch on to "electro" as a label anymore because it longer has cache, so they just semi-arbitrarily chose some "relevant" category it kinda might be able to fit into?

Went to the Korn show at Roseland last week (kinda had to, I work for their label); the DJs weren't great. The first act was some horrorcore rap trio w/vaguely dubstep-ish beats, just kinda reminded me of shit on WordSound Records circa last millennium. But some of the later stuff was OK, especially if you just leaned against the back wall and let it vibrate your chest cavity like a massage chair. I will say that I am liking the new Korn album more than I have ever liked any of their previous work.

that's not funny. (unperson), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:02 (twelve years ago) link

The drug phrase "to drop a bean" immediately brings to mind the masturbation phrase "to flick a bean".

kashi west: late vegetarian (rustic italian flatbread), Saturday, 12 November 2011 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

cool story bro

btw all the non-dubstep dropped was rap music -- opening acts (both of which were interestingly enough african american artists -- the group Two Fresh who did like a trip-hop thing & the straight up dubstep 12th Planet, who got tons of crowd love) each dropped Waka Flocka songs into their sets ('grove st party' and 'hard in the paint' respectively). this was pretty much the only non-dubstep music that didnt get, like, a 'dubstep remix'

the other thing that struck me as forehead smacking obvious about the crossover success of dubstep is that it lets people who've grown up dancing to hip-hop dance exactly the same way -- grinding on each other front-to-ass, at basically the same tempo as hip-hop

skrillex himself dropped 'hypnotize' & let it play for at least a full verse, possibly two (cant recall) and fatman scoop's "be faithful". also "welcome to jamrock". but he didnt overdo that stuff which was good. and he did incorporate a lot of different rhythmic templates -- reggae, house, dubstep, etc. at one pt even did a remix of kris kross' 'jump' where it was basically a perfect imitation of the rhythm, but using those cold metallic textures he uses so everything sounded like pistons covering 'jump.' the only way i recognized the rhythm was because he kept one snatch of the vocal sample in there from the original

also the cheesy singalong parts are basically the same thing as when you're at a corny sports bar and someone drops 'living on a prayer'

When snap was real ... Thumbs up if you agree (D-40), Saturday, 12 November 2011 16:16 (twelve years ago) link

at basically the same tempo as hip-hop

nb this might not actually be true, iirc most dubstep is around 70bpm (or 140 bpm played at halftime) which is actually a bit slower than most hip-hop ? although rap has a pretty wide variance & i'm not even sure how fast most current stuff is

When snap was real ... Thumbs up if you agree (D-40), Saturday, 12 November 2011 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

i realize someone's probably already said as much re: hip-hop tempos but i think seeing this show connected it more closely to the 'dancing' part for me

When snap was real ... Thumbs up if you agree (D-40), Saturday, 12 November 2011 16:27 (twelve years ago) link

A lot of southern rap from the past few years is in the 70-ish range. "Hard in da Paint" is 71 bpm, for instance.

I think the difference between Skillrex and Come To Daddy is that Come To Daddy is a) a joke, b) a one-off, c) has a sense of rhythm. Heard my first Skillrex tune the other day and was kind of amazed how plodding it was, it was kinda "hey, remember rhythm? It used to be this thing..."

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Monday, 14 November 2011 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

lol yeah Come To Daddy intentionally throws rhythmic curveballs all over the place whereas Skrillex sticks pretty strictly to rhythmic conventions

Admins did ILX Haven (crüt), Monday, 14 November 2011 15:51 (twelve years ago) link

I kind of unintentionally became Cap'n Save-A-Bro on this thread: is it brostep?

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Monday, 14 November 2011 15:53 (twelve years ago) link

I don't understand how Aphex is more "rhythmic" or "jokey" compared to Skrillex. Obviously Aphex is a hero, has been since I first heard CTD at 16 y/o, but y'know, his music still adheres to 4/4 structures, recycling drum'n'bass loops, throwing in comedy samples and fucking with metal tropes.

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Monday, 14 November 2011 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

It's because Aphex has a finely-tuned sense of rhythm that he's able to get away with throwing rhythmic curveballs all over the place - cf the useless toss thrown out around that time by less competent drill and bass producers.

The Skillrex I've heard just adheres to this 4/4 plod with zero momentum in the beats themselves. Dude has no sense of groove, basically.

Matt DC, Monday, 14 November 2011 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

skrillex is machine tooled for party kids who need something new to happen at least every four measures. tiesto has been doing shorter club tracks with charli xcx, black eyed peas, etc., on the same tip. i used to grumble about this trend because i love getting lost in a groove and because sometimes i need an extra minute or two to find what to play next, but the lack of dead time in these sub-3-minute blasts really helps when you're trying to energize a dance floor.

incidentally I bet the clip mark e mentioned is after 38:00 in this video of the three of them DJing in a bus in Times Square

Ah yeah I see that now, but perhaps it's the facial hair and coupled with him tying it back now. Also the eyes are strikingly similar too - and this was obscured by Sonny's previous use of the thick rimmed glasses. Apparently Shia has long hair too now?

octobeard, Sunday, 26 February 2023 21:52 (one year ago) link

His DJ presence is just so different now with this look than back in the day when his boyish looks with his hair down exuded this enthusiasm and giddiness. I guess I'm just expressing a personal bias against his current look, as it reminds me of someone who is way douchier, which is shitty, so I'll shuffle off now...

octobeard, Sunday, 26 February 2023 21:56 (one year ago) link

his boyish looks with his hair down exuded this enthusiasm

he's 35 years old, grinning, jumping up & down and dancing on top of the decks in his shorts, waving and cheering his collaborators, doing call-and-response moves with the crowd... plenty of boyish enthusiasm on display imo :)
