i'm just getting through those mixtapes now

i really like this weird raspy croak that he's got when he sings his hooks ("nickelodeon", "haunted house") and originally i thought his mixtape tracks were too blunted to really register for me (whereas back to the traphouse is glossy as fuck and tons of fun to listen to) but i'm kind of digging the mood but maybe i'm just projecting

i am enjoying his album even tho it is very half-assed. i feel bad for paying money for it now that i've watched him sock a woman in the face too.

goole, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 02:51 (seven years ago) Permalink

Yeah that video is fucked. I think the album is pretty great front to back though like 'half assed' is an intentional stylistic decision

there was this thread that linked to my rap blog's gucci posts which was how i found it, basically it was full of ppl saying funny shit like

all u dudes are fucking idiots. shit has never had anything to do with buzz if no good record is made. gucci doesnt have it in him. whatever its the hollerboard not the place to be talking about street rap trends.

basically there were only like 2 dudes who said they liked his music & it was all borderline-racist stuff about how funny & stupid he was & how he needed to do a rap version of 'trapped in the closet', the rest of it was a bunch of folks saying they didnt get it & didnt think he had any buzz

but now its been deleted RIP

Argh actually I felt I kind of stuffed that slightly. The time pressures are such that if you don't get out what you're wanting to say immediately you don't get another chance to say it properly. But I was pleased to be able to promote the piece.

I feel like the last show in particular was really good but it isn't online yet.

Evan R, Sunday, 16 October 2016 02:10 (one month ago) Permalink

other people like him now

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Sunday, 16 October 2016 06:22 (one month ago) Permalink

People have always liked him cornballs in the press are just super late

I'd say it's a mix of stiffer rap style and boilerplate lyrics and just a general sensation that he's not really pushing himself

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 16 October 2016 06:36 (one month ago) Permalink

= the wrong people like him now. I get that you prefer the 07-09 run, I do too. But the boilerplate lyrics accusation has been around forever, and given that he has been out for just a few months and have dropped two albums in that time, and that he sounds a lot more at home and confident and is clearly trying (and generally succeeding at) saying something about who and where he is now, speaking about his addiction and so on, I'd say he may well be pushing himself. Maybe he'll slip back into some kind of lazy default mode shortly but at the moment he's definitely trying to redefine himself. You don't have to like the direction he's going in though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 17 October 2016 06:44 (one month ago) Permalink

it's not what you say, it's how you say it

I agree with deej, this stuff is average as fuck, it isn't even close to his best 2011 or 2012 tracks.

ANU (sisilafami), Monday, 17 October 2016 11:37 (one month ago) Permalink

But the boilerplate lyrics accusation has been around forever

yeah by people who didn't know what they were talking about lol

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 October 2016 14:24 (one month ago) Permalink

i've quite liked some of his guest verses this year -- black beatles and vibin in this bih come to mind immediately -- but i agree with deej that his solo tracks have been pretty stiff

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 October 2016 14:25 (one month ago) Permalink

"The wrong people like him" is a reliable sign sure I like to think of them as negative indicators

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 17 October 2016 15:56 (one month ago) Permalink

I can't even argue with that, lol. I still enjoy this album though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 17 October 2016 16:39 (one month ago) Permalink

I think his verses are as good as they've been in years; it's the hooks that seem a little tired to me. Small quibble though. I'm just enjoying hearing him enjoy rapping again.

Evan R, Monday, 17 October 2016 17:03 (one month ago) Permalink

I like his bit in "Black Beatles."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 October 2016 17:25 (one month ago) Permalink

black beatles, step it up, champions, prolly, guwop home all p.good recent stuff

||||||||, Monday, 17 October 2016 21:51 (one month ago) Permalink

His voice just sounds like a different rapper to me now.

Tim F, Monday, 17 October 2016 22:12 (one month ago) Permalink

That's mostly because he's sober, perhaps?

Anyway, falling out of love with someone is never pretty but it can't be helped I guess. Woptober is still one of my favorite albums this year and Everybody's Looking has its gems too.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 09:05 (one month ago) Permalink

i wouldn't go as far as 'favorite albums this year' but i gave woptober a good listen & its def an improvement over everybody's looking

“Last night, me and Future met up in Atlanta," Gucci Mane told Miss Info. "We ditched our entourages, we didn’t book my usual studio, or his usual studio… It’s like we knew we wanted to fly under the radar. There was like this positive competition in the room. I’d hear him go in on a verse, and I knew I had to step up.”

Explaining his chemistry with Future, Gucci continues, “He would say the same back, and we knocked out 6 songs so crazy that I knew we couldn’t just sit on it. We talked about recording some more, adding more songs. But I didn’t want to over think it or over plan things. Even Future didn’t think we were dropping this tonight. This is the freshest it can get. These joints ain’t even 24 hours old. That’s like bringing you in the studio with us.”
