I fucking adore Achewood -- got hooked after reading The Great Outdoor Fight story last winter. Ray and Roast Beef in particular are unsettlingly real to me, for internet cartoon cats. LOVED the strip a few days ago where they found the guy who invented Comic Sans.

There was recently a interview with Onstad in the Onion AV Club and they printed the first publically-known photo of him. My first thought was that he resembled some past minor Achewood character, like he had anonymously drawn himself in. But I can't recall which character.

Huh liked it better than I thought I would, but maybe that's just because there was ten people itt pooping on it. Onstad actually nailed Roast Beef, but I guess he knows these voices intimately. Ray was close to what I imagined but something is off, like the actor isn't fully committed. Philippe is whatever. Worst was that the comedic timing was weird like many have pointed out, but I still laughed at a couple jokes like Philippe's scone line.
― Vinnie, Saturday, 2 March 2013 13:44 (2 months ago) Permalink
If anything, Ray sounds over-committed to me. But once again yeah, not far off from what I had heard in my head.
― how's life, Saturday, 2 March 2013 14:14 (2 months ago) Permalink
i watched this a second time, and it just doesn't work. i *really don't like the cold, cheap animation. and again, the pacing seems off. it should be drier. don't ask me what that means: just DRIER.

This reminds me of how a few months ago I was in the mood to look up old Calvin and Hobbes strips and read them and have a nostalgia party. I nostalgia partied for a while and enjoyed it very much. Then, after about an hour, I wondered if anyone had done any amateur animation on youtube, so I went there, and some had, and they were repulsive, and my nostalgia party abruptly ended.
― del griffith, Saturday, 2 March 2013 16:57 (2 months ago) Permalink
In an ideal world, the Achewood cartoon would be entirely in scratchy hand drawn cel animation, kind of like the old MTV Migraine Boy bumpers. The current footage as it stands all feels a little too...smooth.
― Pheeel, Saturday, 2 March 2013 17:08 (2 months ago) Permalink
All these years thinking how well Onstad's non-punctuation and "uh"-prefixing of Beef's lines conveys him speaking in a hesitant monotone and it turns out that Onstad-voiced Beef does not talk in a hesitant monotone
(but yeah, Beef way less jarring than Ray, certainly)
― susuwatari teenage riot (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 2 March 2013 17:22 (2 months ago) Permalink
agreed. this computer animation is both too smooth and too weird. in the credits they mention motion capture was used, which maybe explains why it feels like one long uncomfortable cutscene.
i'm only bummed about this because a) i love achewood and b) i've always thought it had potential as an animation.

― well if it isn't old 11 cameras simon (gbx), Saturday, 2 March 2013 17:34 (2 months ago) Permalink
It's weird to me that anyone might have a problem with the smoothness of the animation itself considering that the original Illustrator vector art is about as smooth as you can get. It was off-putting when the Simpsons made the transition to that creepy all-computer razor-sharp HD art, but Achewood's always looked that way. That was part of its original charm for me, that the guy who created it was clearly just goofing off with Illustrator when he was probably supposed to be at work designing something important.
spacecadet, completely agree - I expected beef to be waaay flatter and 100% monotone.
― del griffith, Saturday, 2 March 2013 17:38 (2 months ago) Permalink
I agree with this. Re: Onstad's Beef voice, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried it flatter and in a monotone and it just didn't work for a cartoon. Another option could have just been audible mumbling and subtitles, but naaaaah. I think this is a workable compromise.

Ray sounds a lot older than I imagined him sounding. Like 10-20 years older. That cat could be purple, is what I'm saying, but not old.
I'd probably get used to it, but I'm not sure there's any reason to get used to it. I love Achewood. It doesn't have to go on forever, get animated, or even have closure. I'd like to see Onstad do something different, or just enjoy his life beyond the bounds of my awareness.
