Sorry I didn't notice the tongue in your cheek Lovelace. I just react terribly to "End of discussion" - I don't like being told when to stop talking about something ;)
Anyway, the lesson of the thread is, there is no answer, no universally loved artist.
Except Kelly Osbourne.

I betcha it'd be easier to achieve a consensus if the thread was retitled "Bands That NOBODY Hates".

David Bowie wins it by a mile.
Go back and read the whole thing. He's mentioned early and over three years never gets slammed.
Even if you try now, it doesn't matter.
David Bowie gets the official nod, as he should.

Not even Bowie dancing gayly in a street with Mick Jagger can save him.

Repeated, as obviously a few of you missed it.
Sorry, haters. You missed your chance. Everybody loves David Bowie, which means if you don't- you're NOBODY.

But in addition, does anyone on ILM dislike Super Furry Animals?

It's like saying "I don't get Kraftwerk". The only response to that is I bet you don't get a lot of things...

If I want glam I go T. Tex instead. If I want proto-new wave: I go Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt and Eno and Roxy Music. If I want theatrical art-rock I go Peter Hammill and Vandergraaf. If I want a record that is better proto-punk than Bowie I go Nadir's Last Chance. If I want weird psych-folk then, again, I go Tyrannosaurus Rex or even Tim Buckley. If I want orchestral, showtune weirdness then I go Scott Walker. If I want the best street-wise rock I go VU's Loaded. If I ever want guitar madness then I go the Sweet Sister Ray bootleg. Not to mention Alex Harvey, Steve Harley, Alice Cooper, the Cockettes, and Jobriath all fit in here somewhere.
Call us folks who don't suck Bowie's dick clueless but everywhere you turn are artists with greater vision than Bowie whom he cannibalized so he could turn himself into some mythical rock star legend.
As for the the "gay issue" so to speak, the Cockettes are super-esoteric but they challenged anti-gay stereotypes more radically than Bowie ever did.

Ok, this is pretty much spot on, and he's admitted as much, but that's part of his brilliance. Musicians are almost always the product of their influences- it's what influences they choose and how they build from them that defines their greatness. Bowie's choice of influences were exceptional, and in the process of chasing them he created his own unique vision.
Yeah but they never cracked mainstream pop and rock radio the way Bowie did. Disco-bashing, gun rack sporting, "Stones Rule!" "Stairway To Heaven is the best song EVER!" guys grew up listening to Bowie tracks and still loved him enough to keep him in that arena, despite all those rumors that he and Mick Jagger were playing leap frog, despite the fact that DB's stage persona had some serious ponce leanings.
