prepatch PES 2012 is sick

I had a couple of long multiplayer sessions on FIFA and PES last weekend; PES was atrocious clunky on-rails shit and FIFA was silky and brilliant

MPx4A, Saturday, 22 October 2011 17:41 (twelve years ago) link

so, PES this year is actually superb except for the fairly significant problem that the online is weirdly broken. my friend could get online with it fine the first couple times he tried, but then he just couldn't get it to connect at all, and eventually it was just locking him up on a loading screen which he had to quit out...which kinda bricked his ps3, or at least he had to look up some shit online to fuck around with the HD and the operating system to fix it. so we decided with heavy hearts to sack it off and trade in for fifa 12. i play a bit vs randoms but i mostly play against this one friend, so no point doing otherwise. we played a 2-3 hours the other night and the first couple games it was bluetooth banter as per but gradually we descended into silence. this shit is so bad. i mean, not just bad in comparison, but bad on its own merits. i am stunned that i am stuck with this POS for the year. i could not be in a worse mood about this. and seriously, under the circumstances we were desperate to give it every break we could. we realized pretty much immediately that we had to put nearly everything on manual, which is kind of making excuses for the programming being shit but yeah i can see people maybe would prefer to play like this anyway because of the freedom, but that doesn't change the fact that the core game is garbage. at this point i feel like i would rather get a new friend and trade back for PES.

This is the first year in a long time where I haven't bought either. Hoenstly, I felt both demos were better than last year's games, but not enough better for me to drop another $60 on either. I think it's going to be a waiting game for the next generation now as I don't feel like the games are really doing enough. In fact, I've re-installed PES 5 and feel like that will more than do for now.

PES is too good

was playing PSG-malaga, noticed julio baptista was getting far too much of the ball in the space betw midfield and defence. dropped my DMF a couple of mm and totally nullified the threat

playing arsenal-nancy, vermaelen making rangy runs from defence, and each time it broke down arteta was sat in defence covering

First time in years that I'm getting absolutely no fun from FIFA

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 23 October 2011 11:37 (twelve years ago) link

I'm tempted to try out PES for the first time since 2008 but since I mostly play on-line - I'm a bit worried by how the game performs on that front

don't update it, they released an update to fix the keepers and in doing so broke the shooting, dribbling, and 'feel'

ten months pass...

so, 2012 summary: pes was better, unplayable online, fifa was kind of horrible in comparison at first but actually not too bad in the end, some real garbage but you end up adjusting for it so you hardly notice

2013 so far: 1st pes demo was garbaggio. new one with tweaks this week i guess. is there a fifa demo yet? i haven't seen anything.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 12:09 (eleven years ago) link

Fifa demo comes out on the 11th of September.

Can't see anything new amidst all this EA mumbo jumbo:

Product Description
Winner of the prestigious E3 Game Critics award for “Best Sports Game”, FIFA 13 captures the unpredictability of real-world football, ensuring no two matches are ever the same. The game features breakthrough gameplay innovations that create a true battle for possession across the entire pitch and deliver freedom and creativity in attack, as well as engaging online features and live services that connect fans to the heartbeat of the sport-and to each other-through EA SPORTS Football Club. FIFA 13 is Football's Social Network, where fans connect, compete and share with millions of others around the world.
FIFA 13 with Move support enables you to enjoy a new level of on-pitch control over your team. Use the Move motion controller to draw runs for teammates in attack, assign defenders to man-mark dangerous opponents, and more accurately play through-balls, passes, and knock-on touches. Plus, it’s easier to take dangerous shots on goal or perform skill moves with one hand using gestures with the motion controller.

Key Features

Attacking Intelligence - All-new positioning intelligence infuses attacking players with the ability to analyse plays and position themselves to create new attacking opportunities. Players will work harder and smarter to break down defences, make runs that pull defenders out of position, and open passing channels for teammates. Players think two plays ahead to create, curve, or alter runs to capitalize on openings as they occur.
Complete Dribbling - Take on defenders with the freedom to be more creative in attack. Players are more explosive accelerating with the ball, and utilise precise dribble touches with true 360° mobility with the ball while facing a defender. Face an opponent to threaten attack while moving with the ball in any direction to dodge tackles, or turn and shield the ball, holding off defenders for longer stretches.
FIFA 13 First Touch Control - A new system eliminates near-perfect control for every player by creating uncertainty when receiving difficult balls. Poor passes are harder to control, enabling defenders to capitalize on errant balls and poor touches. Factors such as defensive pressure, trajectory of the ball, and velocity of the pass all factor into a player’s success. Players with better control and skill stand out. Fewer perfect touches, the potential to over hit passes, more loose balls, and greater balance between defending and attacking.
Player Impact Engine - Physical play expands to give defenders more tools to win back possession. Defenders can use their body to win possession, push and pull for position, and utilise their size and strength to force opponents into poor touches and decisions before the ball arrives.
FIFA 13 Tactical Free Kicks - Create dangerous and unpredictable free kicks. Position up to three attacking players over the ball and confuse opponents with dummy runs, more passing options, and more elaborate free kicks. Opponents can counter by adding or subtracting players to the wall or sending a bullet man to intercept the pass or block the shot.
Skill Games - Learn or master the fundamental skills necessary to compete at FIFA 13 in a competitive and addictive new mode. Become a better player, faster, no matter what your skill level, competing against yourself or friends in 32 mini-games.
Career Mode - Compete for club and country in an expanded Career Mode that now includes internationals. Play for or manage your favorite national team, competing in friendlies, qualifiers and major international tournaments. At the club level, new Transfer logic adds a multitude of new factors that shape a player’s true market value. Form, performance, and morale influence a player’s base value to begin negotiations that now include counter offers, player and cash transactions, and squad roles. Player loans, Board interactions and mid-season manager firings add to the drama. Plus, unlock new features like Edit Player or Rematch in the EA SPORTS Football Club Catalogue.
EA SPORTS Football Club - Earn rewards, level up, enjoy live Challenges based on real-world football events, and connect with friends. Everything within FIFA 13, and against friends, is measured in a meaningful way. Earn rewards to unlock items like kits, special celebrations, Virtual Pro Attribute Boosts, and Career Mode Super Scout Credits from the new Football Club Catalogue. Plus, build status as you climb 100 levels. Real-world storylines drive regular challenges so that FIFA 13 will play like the real-world season.
EA SPORTS Football Club Match Day - Match Day feeds real-world news ripped from the headlines around the world into the game. Drama such as injuries, suspensions, team form, and media gossip will be reflected through in-game commentary and play out in-game. Real-world fixtures and upcoming clashes of your favourite club in the top leagues will enable fans to play right along with the beats of the season. Player form will change frequently, so players in form, or players struggling to keep form, will see their stats change throughout the season based on their real-world performance. Plus, Games of the Week will highlight the top global matchups for fans to enjoy.
FIFA Ultimate Team - Earn, buy, trade and bid for coveted players to build a team of the world’s best football stars. Create and manage multiple squads and compete in ranked online play with seasons, promotions, and relegation. For new players it’s now easier than ever to get in the game with a re-designed navigation system and the Icebreaker Flow, enabling inexperienced players to choose a team captain-Messi, Benzema, Hart, Kuba or Marchisio-to begin a guided ultimate team journey.
Seasons - Compete in single player or new 2v2 ranked online play where you and your mate battle together in 10 game seasons to win promotion in the league divisions. Division Titles have been added to every division, and a new Trophy Cabinet enables champions to showcase their silverware. Perfect your lineup and tactics across multiple Seasons matches, save the squads, and use them for every match. Plus, new match-making options, enabling you to fine tune your Seasons experience.
Pro Clubs Seasons - The FIFA Seasons format comes to Pro Clubs. Compete with your Pro Club in 10 game seasons, trying to earn enough points to be promoted, avoid relegation, win a Division Title or qualify for a Cup tournament. Key new features include an online only Pro, with progression and growth tracked and stored online, and a Free Agent Hub, enabling Pros not currently on a club to play drop-in matches and view leaderboards.
Teammate Control - Enjoy a new level of on-pitch control over your team by using the Move motion controller on attack to draw running paths for teammates. On defense, ‘Mark a Man’ by using the motion controller to select an opponent and send the nearest teammate to defend him or guide teammates into position and jockey attackers simply by moving the cursor.
Point and Play - Accurately place through-balls and throw-ins to open space, use knock-on touches to set up shots or create separation from defenders, all with the motion controller.
Point and Shoot - Use the motion controller and with one hand create dangerous shots on goal. Flick the controller up to chip shots over the keeper or twist the controller to curve the ball around a defender and into the goal. Plus, use the motion controller to quickly and easily perform skill moves like 360 degree moves or chop turns.
Team Management - Change tactics quickly without pausing the game. Gesture with the motion controller, easily switching between tactics like the off-side trap, pressing forward or swapping wings.
EA SPORTS Football Club App For iPhone - Access your Football Club identity and friends, manage your FIFA Ultimate Team, search the live auctions and bid to win new players.

the first touch mechanic is the thing that jumps out. there is the danger that EA overcook something like this to the point of almost ruining the game. but it sounds great in theory.

Man, PES seems pretty good?

Sgt. Biscuits, Friday, 21 September 2012 18:50 (eleven years ago) link

I always thought PES had better graphics and presentation than FIFA anyway but playing the newer demo I forgot how much stuff it always did better, like offside goals being briefly celebrated and subs running off the bench for late winners; FIFA only just got round to having the players stop playing when the final whistle goes

Sgt. Biscuits, Friday, 21 September 2012 18:53 (eleven years ago) link

I guess FIFA will still turn out to be better again tho I'unno

not really feeling the demos for either tbh. it's a disappointing business.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 21 September 2012 20:56 (eleven years ago) link

I like the PES demo. The FIFA one doesn't do anything for me at all, but I thought last year's FIFA was absolutely joyless. I play offline so Konami's issues with online don't bother me, and EA's online strengths are irrelevant.

started playing 13 in the be a player mode. so painful. it seriously takes like 5-10 minutes of boring, irrelevant simming between matches just to play again. EA games menus/load times are so fucking awful these days. they shouldn't be allowed to ship bullshit like this. similar issues with nhl 13 based on the small amt of time i've spent with it.

I like Geoff. I only play online where the injuries take about thirty seconds to run off so he just pops up to reassure me that everything is going to be ok. I've enjoyed FIFA 13 so far - seems a little faster and possibly less realistic in some ways but lots of fun.

Feel free to add me as sv80

i couldn't bear either demo. it is the first time in a decade i haven't bought a new fifa or pes, or madden for that matter.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 15 October 2012 13:27 (eleven years ago) link

I play the new PES almost every day. The improvement in ball physics and AI is huge, and it differentiates between good and bad teams quite well. I like the new FIFA too, but it doesn't differentiate as well nor have as good computer controlled AI. If I played online I'm sure I'd play FIFA, but I don't so the AI is crucial.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 15 October 2012 13:44 (eleven years ago) link

picked up FIFA 14 for the 360. how do you get your man to jump for a header? the AI does it all the time and it's killing me on corner kicks. Hull Tiger City will not be denied.

brownie, Monday, 16 December 2013 14:01 (ten years ago) link

From memory, press B and a direction and you should head it out. Try to change to the appropriate player with the left bumper a fraction of a second beforehand.

Ramnaresh Samhain (ShariVari), Monday, 16 December 2013 14:21 (ten years ago) link

yeah ok, thanks. i'm having better luck now, dunno what i was thinking. got Hull City two wins in their first two matches. playing ten minute halfs. not a lot of corner kicks so far, not much crossing, most of the games have been played from the middle.

this scouting stuff is getting tedious. i just want to overpay on the transfer market tbh.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 20 June 2014 12:21 (nine years ago) link

Half-tempted by the World Cup edition of Fifa but €40 is too much for what is mostly the same game with some extra international teams.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Friday, 20 June 2014 12:23 (nine years ago) link

I bought FIFA 13 a year after everyone else and couldn't get on with it. I think I'm done with football games - the endless tweaking to someone's idea of the perfect rendition of the beautiful game has taken all of the fun out of it.

I think graphical improvements have made games look worse - like a cartoony FIFA 10 Messi looks more like Messi than a 2014 1080p Messi_HD coz you can see all the things that aren't quite right. Players also feel kind of detached from their environments - like in those driving games where the cars feel pivoted on a central vertical axis.

The next-gen FIFA 15 demo is very good

the ball control feels a lot more variable and realistic, and dribbles with scampering technique pixies like Silva and Sterling feel v different this year

the graphics still aren't remotely impressive compared with e.g. the 2K Sports stuff though, sort of embarrassing how uniformly textured and waxwork the players look

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Sunday, 21 September 2014 13:27 (nine years ago) link

starting to feel an urge to pick up FIFA 15 - 4 years after getting off the wagon

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 10:18 (nine years ago) link

on the fence about whether this actually good or not

seem to endure >5 immaculate no-look AI backheel through balls, a patently ridiculous penalty/red card and at least one serious injury every single fuckin match

also, a player with three years left on his deal saying "even though I want to leave you can still select me for the team if you want" and not being able to batter him

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 14:17 (nine years ago) link

The PES demo blows the FIFA one out of the water. I'm sure I'll once again end up owning both at some point, but PES looks like where I'll start this year.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 14:26 (nine years ago) link

one month passes...

think the thing in FIFA where two balls get on the pitch and you get to wait for someone to toepoke the second one out of play at a glacial pace before you take a throw-in might be the worst feature that's ever been intentionally coded into a video game ever

it's completely skippable but even so

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Saturday, 22 November 2014 22:36 (nine years ago) link

Picked up PES. Best football AI I've ever seen. Not perfect, but they'll at least try to play.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 23 November 2014 03:21 (nine years ago) link

try the PES demo. It's not perfect or anything, but it's fun and the AI doesn't make you want to throw your controller across the room.

Went PES this year; setting up the real teams is a ballache for the 30 minutes it takes, but it's much funner to move the ball around than in FIFA, with its beach ball passing and seemingly horrendously botched new set piece system

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Monday, 3 October 2016 21:00 (seven years ago) link

friend is trying to drag me back in. i basically quit this shit entirely maybe 3 years ago when both pes and fifa were disgraceful. but were still getting great reviews of course. can we get some ethics in games journalism, please.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 3 October 2016 22:23 (seven years ago) link

Why are these things a) so fucking hard to satisfactorily play? and b) so long-winded to even set up a match? Like in a world where the Fifa games are literally less user-friendly than Football Manager what is the fucking point?

don't even see how this was a duck (Noodle Vague), Monday, 3 October 2016 23:18 (seven years ago) link
