My dentist falls all over himself to tell me what great teeth I have every time I go to the dentist. This makes me inordinately proud of my teeth. I mentioned this at my last appointment and he said, "You should be proud! You have great teeth! That's because you take care of them!" etc.
So, I am very proud of my teeth. Also I had my front two teeth bonded when I was in junior high and even though that's only supposed to last five years tops, it's still going strong.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 14 October 2011 01:27 (1 year ago) Permalink
It's more about the configuration of teeth than their health. Jenny, you have square straight strong teeth.
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Friday, 14 October 2011 01:28 (1 year ago) Permalink
Some people have thin wafery clear teeth.
Thank you. I have never had braces. I have good teeth genes.

well I had braces when I was 11 or 12. and a palate expander. after they came off they revealed that I have an underbite. the orthodontist told me that to fix it, I would have to get a tooth extracted and the rest of my teeth pushed around to fill the gap - is that even possible? they also installed a permanent wire.
this other kid I knew had a big gap between his front teeth but after he hit puberty, it all straightened itself out and he had perfect teeth!
I always wonder what my teeth would have ended up like if I had let nature take its course.
presently, I think my front teeth are slightly uneven and my incisors are slanting inwards.
― 2001: a based godyssey (dayo), Friday, 14 October 2011 01:29 (1 year ago) Permalink
also I have like 7 cavities, all gotten within a 5 month period of munching on jelly bellies when I was maybe 13. I brush twice a day with a sonicare and I also use a waterpik.
my teeth are sensitive to temperature, sugar and (I think) acidity. after I eat a tart apple, I will feel tingling and slight pain if I chew gum. I live in fear of getting another cavity.
― 2001: a based godyssey (dayo), Friday, 14 October 2011 01:30 (1 year ago) Permalink
My teeth are disproportionately large for the rest of my mouth.I like uneven teeth a lot -- esp when the front ones slant in just slightly.
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Friday, 14 October 2011 01:31 (1 year ago) Permalink
I also had a lot of cavities (also possibly b/c of jelly bellies!) and a verifiably sadistic orthodontist who is no longer practicing.
But I want to see teeth, not talk about their health or trauma to the teeth.
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Friday, 14 October 2011 01:32 (1 year ago) Permalink
jed you have small squares with a hint of crooked. i like them.
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Friday, 14 October 2011 01:33 (1 year ago) Permalink
I like crooked teeth. I think they make people look interesting. I also like a nice front tooth gap, like Gwen Harper here:
I had a BF in college who had an underbite fixed. He had his jaw broken and wired shut for awhile.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 14 October 2011 01:34 (1 year ago) Permalink
i am a bit of a teeth snob. i had orthodontics in high school from age 12-17, so that's prob a part of it, this painful quest for some kind of correction->perfection. and my teeth aren't even 'perfect' - they were never bad anyway, more of a jaw alignment issue that was corrected(ish). they did extract one molar when i was 12 or 13 and i still don't think they should have, bc i think it caused slight asymmetry of my face. but what's done is done! i'm not going in for jaw surgery that's for sure. i floss every day and don't have cavities, though soon will need a gum graft on a few teeth :/
but anyway, i have many friends who have imperfect or outright messed-up teeth, and i don't care, i mean, that's part of who they are. and yet a nice straight set of teeth is an amazing and intriguing thing to me. i have def said to people "you have great teeth!"
xps to LL - hahaa okay!

ty La Lechera, i'v never had a brace or any kind of cosmetic dentistry, which is surely evident, but they are pretty straight at the top and slightly squinty and overcrowded at the bottom front. they are ivory coloured and i would like them whiter. i have A LOT of amalgum fillings which i can't afford to replace atm and you can see one of them at the top left of my mouth.

xp I think it probably reflects a value for affluence - braces are expensive so if your kids have perfect teeth, it's a non-ostentatious and health-justifiable way of showing you've got some money. Ditto regular dental care. Dental plans cost extra money so having well cared for teeth is a sign of affluence.

I was so bummed about Bowie's teeth fixup when I discovered it in high school that my friend made me a poster of "The Original Choppers of David Bowie." It was an 8.5x11" piece of paper on which she glued printouts of every internet pic she could find of his true awesome mouth.
I was really bummed when I recently discovered Marin Gore had done the same thing.
Why come you can wear bondage suspenders and leather shorts on stage but are self-conscious about your teeth???

I was really worried when my wisdom teeth grew in that it would fuck things up for my mouth. When I finally got around to seeing a dentist, he told me there would be room in my mouth for four more teeth needs be. This is empirical evidence that I have a big mouth.

― conrad, Friday, 14 October 2011 01:55 (1 year ago) Permalink
I had braces from age 8 to 14. They pulled 10 baby teeth to put those suckers on me. When they came off my teeth were perfect but started to shift soon thereafter. I couldn't sleep through the night with the retainer they gave me so hardly wore it and I grind my teeth so badly that it made them shift even faster.
I hate my teeth now and am very self-conscious of them. I had to search for like 10 mins to find a pic of me smile with my mouth open. IRL I smile widely and often and don't think about it too much but I'm aware of it in pictures. I really want invisilign but I don't know if that'll work because of the grinding.

x-post - I have several gaps in the top row and a slight overbite. The bottom row is totally crooked too but I don't care as much about that one as it's not as visible.

ally sheedy has long crowded pointies
i was supposed to get braces but my parents couldn't afford it - or so they said - but then for my younger siblings they somehow found the money. a dentist told me the inside of my mouth is unusually small and all my teeth are crowded in, overlapping each other. my top two front teeth overlap, which i really only noticed for the first time about 4 yrs ago when i saw a photo of myself caught laughing unawares. now i'm extra aware of it and i'm convinced they're becoming more and more overlapped.
