I am black you fucking idiot so those kind of lame jokes wont work.

Actually they do work because you're a scumsucking self-loving hippie-dipshit westerner.

Sorry I didn't notice the tongue in your cheek Lovelace. I just react terribly to "End of discussion" - I don't like being told when to stop talking about something ;)

Anyway, the lesson of the thread is, there is no answer, no universally loved artist.

Except Kelly Osbourne.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:07 (eighteen years ago) link

mr dean: wow. all that because I so vehemently argue that bob marley is the most popular artist in the world? you need to relax and stop being a boring internet comedian. it's been before and so much better.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:08 (eighteen years ago) link

haha, boring internet comedian vs. bob marley fan with his finger on the "pulse" of Africa.

THE JAMES DEAN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT (ex machina), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:09 (eighteen years ago) link

who said I was a bob marley fan? holy shit...

Lovelace (Lovelace), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:10 (eighteen years ago) link

All black people love Bob Marley.

So was it it a study abroad program then? You don't seem the type that was going around vaccinating babies, eh?

THE JAMES DEAN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT (ex machina), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:12 (eighteen years ago) link

I never said or even implied that. You're the one who constantly bring out the color issue.

No, my parents are from Ethiopia and my uncle was an Ethiopian ambassador to two West African countries(Ivory Coast and Ghana).

I think Marvin Gaye wins, unless I missed something. Although I don't really believe anyone who says they dislike the Beatles...

Richard K (Richard K), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't dislike the Beatles, I just don't really give a toss about them.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Al Green is the only real answer, probably. I know people who don't like Marvin gaye, I don't know anyone who doesn't like Al Green.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Monday, 27 June 2005 23:33 (eighteen years ago) link

what about portishead's first album. seems like everyone can get into that. a friend remarked that if portishead were played on public transportation the world would be a much nicer place.

AAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!! It was so worth trudging through all of this entirely pointless thread just to see those Bono pictures. Hilarious. Thanks James Dean!

DoG67, Friday, 6 January 2006 03:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Damn! I gotta admit I did the trudging as well. What? No Zombies? CCR?

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 6 January 2006 05:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Its impossible to hate AC/DC. Surely?

The Velvet Overlord (The Velvet Overlord), Friday, 6 January 2006 07:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Willie Nelson wasn't mentioned in this thread, was he? he should have been! everyone loves Willie Nelson!

gear (gear), Friday, 6 January 2006 07:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm indifferent to Willie, myself.

I betcha it'd be easier to achieve a consensus if the thread was retitled "Bands That NOBODY Hates".

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 6 January 2006 08:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, it's quite easy to hate AC/DC if you have an IQ in the three-figure range.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 6 January 2006 08:12 (eighteen years ago) link

You know what I love about this thread?

David Bowie wins it by a mile.

Go back and read the whole thing. He's mentioned early and over three years never gets slammed.

Even if you try now, it doesn't matter.

David Bowie gets the official nod, as he should.

jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, 6 January 2006 08:23 (eighteen years ago) link

aged twat who's released just enough good songs over a 40 year career to fill up a single listenable disc of hits. fuck that guy.

gear (gear), Friday, 6 January 2006 08:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah sorry jsoula. He is a twat and all is music is rubbish, except for the Laughing Gnome, and that's not enough to make up for Ziggy Startdust et al.

Not even Bowie dancing gayly in a street with Mick Jagger can save him.

mei (mei), Friday, 6 January 2006 10:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Heh heh, ya hadda go and mention 'im, didn't ya jsoulja!
(I don't hate Bowie myself. But I'm not displeased that there are apparently some who do.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 6 January 2006 15:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Repeated, as obviously a few of you missed it.

Sorry, haters. You missed your chance. Everybody loves David Bowie, which means if you don't- you're NOBODY.

jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, 6 January 2006 16:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm not a Bowie hater, but not a lover by any stretch. Gear OTM. Even his best stuff doesn't get me that excited.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 6 January 2006 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I certainly like Bowie.

But in addition, does anyone on ILM dislike Super Furry Animals?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Um, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but saying you don't like David Bowie, especially saying you actually dislike David Bowie, given his MASSIVE influence on music and other assorted social implications (i.e. don't think for a second that DB didn't single-handedly cut a serious chunk of anti-gay preconceptions out of mainstream rock radio in his career), is kind of like saying you're really not all that with it, know what I mean? It's ok if you don't, but, you know, you're saying a lot of other things there, too.

It's like saying "I don't get Kraftwerk". The only response to that is I bet you don't get a lot of things...

jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I try to get into Bowie every now and then, but I get rather bored with the music.

If I want glam I go T. Tex instead. If I want proto-new wave: I go Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt and Eno and Roxy Music. If I want theatrical art-rock I go Peter Hammill and Vandergraaf. If I want a record that is better proto-punk than Bowie I go Nadir's Last Chance. If I want weird psych-folk then, again, I go Tyrannosaurus Rex or even Tim Buckley. If I want orchestral, showtune weirdness then I go Scott Walker. If I want the best street-wise rock I go VU's Loaded. If I ever want guitar madness then I go the Sweet Sister Ray bootleg. Not to mention Alex Harvey, Steve Harley, Alice Cooper, the Cockettes, and Jobriath all fit in here somewhere.

Call us folks who don't suck Bowie's dick clueless but everywhere you turn are artists with greater vision than Bowie whom he cannibalized so he could turn himself into some mythical rock star legend.

As for the the "gay issue" so to speak, the Cockettes are super-esoteric but they challenged anti-gay stereotypes more radically than Bowie ever did.

i hate them a LOT.

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:33 (eighteen years ago) link

xxpost - I don't know what I'm saying other than there are a lot of things I prefer to Bowie from every style and period he belongs to. I get him just fine, just not that into it. You could fit every Bowie song I like on one CD and probably still have some space left. And I'd play that CD once every 3 years.

I only dislike Super Furry Animals a little.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:39 (eighteen years ago) link

when has david bowie ever had fun?

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:40 (eighteen years ago) link

(serious question)

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:41 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm overstating my case up there, since i own and really, really like several bowie albums. there's a little devil's advocate in that post. i don't hate him. but he's boring much of the time and even his two disc hits comp really starts to suck ass after the early-'80s. i think his place in the canon is overstated to a large degree but then again that goes for the beatles and the stones and hendrix and all those canon guys.

gear (gear), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:50 (eighteen years ago) link

my mom hates ac/dc :(

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:52 (eighteen years ago) link

i just went through this whole thing and didn't see sly and the family stone, which is odd. but now that geir's here that might get shot down.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Call us folks who don't suck Bowie's dick clueless but everywhere you turn are artists with greater vision than Bowie whom he cannibalized so he could turn himself into some mythical rock star legend.

Ok, this is pretty much spot on, and he's admitted as much, but that's part of his brilliance. Musicians are almost always the product of their influences- it's what influences they choose and how they build from them that defines their greatness. Bowie's choice of influences were exceptional, and in the process of chasing them he created his own unique vision.

As for the the "gay issue" so to speak, the Cockettes are super-esoteric but they challenged anti-gay stereotypes more radically than Bowie ever did.

Yeah but they never cracked mainstream pop and rock radio the way Bowie did. Disco-bashing, gun rack sporting, "Stones Rule!" "Stairway To Heaven is the best song EVER!" guys grew up listening to Bowie tracks and still loved him enough to keep him in that arena, despite all those rumors that he and Mick Jagger were playing leap frog, despite the fact that DB's stage persona had some serious ponce leanings.
