Cookies are never silly at any time. They are serious business!

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe i will get one on my way to the train in an hour :)

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Then you will have something to taunt others with on the train. EXCELLENT

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 20:40 (fifteen years ago) link

now i just have to figure out where to buy cookies near here. it is a strange neighborhood.

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I dearly hope the cookies have been found and consumed.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 21:16 (fifteen years ago) link

5:30...

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 21:22 (fifteen years ago) link

...and all's well?

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 21:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I applaud that chap's ingenuity and persistence.

And I apologise for posting that image.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 22:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i made it! social security # officially applied for (there was a VERY crazy lady there); job applied for at bookstore in berkeley; and OMG I HAD AMERICAN MCDONALDS FOR THE FIRST TIIME AND IT WAS AMAZING!!!!!

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 22:50 (fifteen years ago) link

RR, I heart you, and yet, McDonald's. Next time go here:

http://www.in-n-out.com/location_details.asp?id=193

Or whichever other location is closest. You're welcome.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 23:51 (fifteen years ago) link

(More seriously, yay SSN and job prospects!)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 23:51 (fifteen years ago) link

sorry, ned, but i adore highly processed foods. and i have been v v good the last five weeks: i've eaten tons of super healthy vegan/veggie burgers.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 00:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh this is more than understandable, but you must treat yourself, now that you are in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 00:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think I've eaten an actual meal at a McDonald's since I was in 9th grade. I have a bad association with their food due to what was probably a stomach flu.

I have heard a lot of great things about these In and Out burgers. Mmmmmmm. Sounds so goooood...

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 01:33 (fifteen years ago) link

from what i understand in-n-out is still processed etc, right?

i did not has cookies. but. i went for mani/pedi and then joined a friend for fried chicken, cheese grits, and collard greens so i think that more than makes up for it. also they gave us a sugar daddy w/ fortune attached, and a bag like you would get from a kiddie birthday party. its contents: 2 mary janes, 2 pixie sticks (1 purple, 1 blue), and something that appears to be orange taffy. woah!

tehresa, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 01:52 (fifteen years ago) link

now i am wishing i had a treadmill at home like sara.

tehresa, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 01:54 (fifteen years ago) link

in-n-out burgers are usually the first thing we eat after we land in california, they are the best, and their fries are very great too, and their chocolate shakes.

estela, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 01:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Mmmmm chocolate shakes.

Pixie sticks! I don't think I'd had one of those since I was, like, SEVEN!

re: the treadmill - I bought it at a garage sale for $50. It's not new, and it's really noisy, but it really does work to keep me exercising, especially when the weather is too cold to be outside. If you have room for one, they are awesome. Someday I'll get one that is new and that isn't destroying my hearing.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 02:09 (fifteen years ago) link

definitely do not have room for one :( some day, though... i always wanted an elliptical machine in my house.

tehresa, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 02:11 (fifteen years ago) link

from what i understand in-n-out is still processed etc, right?

Hell no, the whole idea is that they're being cooked while-u-wait -- locations vary but the kitchen area is almost always set up so you can see it all from the counter. It's very much an assembly line deal in the best sense.

Their big ol' how-we-do-things page, which is puffery as written but they back it up.

Also! (And RR, this is v. v. important, and will show you know what you're doing.) Not all items are on the menu -- you can ask for 'grilled cheese sandwiches' (ie hamburgers sans patty) as well as monstrous combinations like the 4-by-4, which has as many patties as you might guess. And you can ask for the burgers without the bun, wrapped in lettuce, etc.

So heed estela's words of wisdom, RR -- you would trust your fellow Kiwi, right? :-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 03:40 (fifteen years ago) link

so cooked while you wait includes them making fresh patties, etc?

tehresa, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 03:51 (fifteen years ago) link

The one concession to reality, alas -- they make the patties at their own central site and ship 'em out daily. At the location across from UCI I usually see their big truck delivering everything (patties, buns, vegetables, etc.) for the day to said spot each morning.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 04:03 (fifteen years ago) link

You guys are making me feel hungry again. It's almost midnight, ffs!

I'm not sure I have ever seen an elliptical machine in person. I have certainly never tried one! Is it worth a humiliating evening at the fitness room of one of the local colleges?

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 04:39 (fifteen years ago) link

ned, in nz the mcdonald's now has an open kitchen and a policy of 'made fresh, just for you', so they don't make any burgers until you order and you see them being put together.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 14:39 (fifteen years ago) link

but the ones at the berkeley macca's are still the best i've eaten.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 14:39 (fifteen years ago) link

This is all good re: NZ's wisdom. Now imagine that quality applied to something even *better* than a McDonald's! :-D (Okay, I will stop! Remember, we are all doing this for you because you rule -- I would have told evil people to only eat at Taco Bell.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:11 (fifteen years ago) link

for someone who is 'OMG SO STRESSED SO MUCH TO DO I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU ARE LEAVING WHEN I"M SO BUSY' my boss certainly seems to know how to have chatty time w/ his friends on the phone.

tehresa, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:12 (fifteen years ago) link

I had the IN 'N' OUT on sunday and by fast food standards it is very good, expecially the shakes which are very proper and don't seem to be made of margarine, burgers pretty good although I wouldn't expect hormone free beef. Definitely best fast food burger. Also I like the simplicity, they do burgers, fries, shakes and sodas and nothing else.

On the food front, had awesome thai up in hollywood last night, ok the green papaya salad with salty crab was a little disappointing, they didn't believe me when I asked for it really spicy.

Ed, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Heheh. They are not used to non-Thais asking for 'really spicy' around here, trust me.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:58 (fifteen years ago) link

last night i indulged myself with a massive platter of enchiburritacomale insanity at Boca Chica w/FB and K. so awesome. great margaritas. wooooo.

xpost it seems shocking, but after 30+ years of thai support MN has finally broken through the barrier of O_o when it comes to not-thai ordering 5 pepper hottt

BLACK BEYONCE, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:05 (fifteen years ago) link

speaking of which, it breaks my heart that ed is coming to STPL and that the downtown Sawatdee is closed. I have an alternate within walking distance of the excel though, so life will be OK.

BLACK BEYONCE, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link
