lol @ taking my throwaway one-liner on why I'm not picking MIN and reading way too much into it.

As a QB with no particular track record on an 0-2 team, Tarvaris (I had no idea there was an extra 'R' in there) is going to take his share of shit. I don't really see the problem with this. If they start winning games he'll become a "game manager." QBing in the NFL is totally feast or famine right now to the point where going 15-25 for 150-something yards and no picks is actually considered praiseworthy. I agree with you in one sense--ALL the guys who put up that line should be getting some criticism sent their way. Cassel was lousy on Sunday but that's not a story you'll read very much.

that said, it was pretty awful when the fans booed the bejeezus outta t-jax, and i have no problem believing that minnesota fans are all racialist dbags

minnesota is the most racist place? worse than philly? i find that extremely hard to believe.

philly is very racist too, i mean 'most racist' really depends on the time & day. for example arizona is so racist they didn't even have mlk day for years.

People disliked Warren Moon because of the whole wife-beating thing.

It's much fairer to say that the Vikings' owners are racist than it is to say that Minnesota en masse is racist.

im gonna say right here that the OMG SHOCKING NEWS of week 3 will be the pats being seriously challenged (if not beat!) by the dolphins. the dolphins historically have played the patriots well in NE and the cassell incarnation of them is much closer to the jets that the dolphins nearly beat than the cardinals that they got torched by last week. im talking something like 16-13.

the thing with jackson is that they are still handcuffing him, and if the coaching staff doesn't show outward confidence in their QB than there is no way that their fanbase will

ilx: a miracle i helped create (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 21:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i will say, there is a long history of fickle fandom re: qb's in dc. i mean, anecdotally, i've heard about the sonny/kilmer flipflops, but when i was a kid, i remember pulling for bob holly and babe laufenberg over theisman and two short years later calling for jay schroeder's head in the throes of doug "pockets" williams-mania; gus over heath, trent green over gus; running brad johnson out of town...

really, gibbs winning the super bowl w/ three different qbs was a curse.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 21:35 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't know if Minnesota is a racist bunghole of a town or not, but I do think the criticism of Jackson has been fair. So far his career trajectory has been similar to Kyle Boller's, both of them cannon armed quarterbacks with a middling passing percentages drafted purely on potential. Those of type of players almost never pan out in the NFL.

Redskins’ fans are rooting for Colt Brennen? Weak armed system quarterbacks almost never make in the NFL either. I think Jason Campbell is going to be fine.

I would like to see FO do some research on QBs' starting performance relative to their predecessors' performance plus seasons-of-bench-warming experience under said predecessor. Barnwell had a line about Rodgers vs. Smith in re: class of 2005 explaining why he thought Rodgers would have been just as much of a bust had he gotten stuck in Smith's position.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

But yeah the Brady rule. cf. Favre, Brett.

I really don't understand why teams still try to draft their way to ghreatness at the QB position. And it's always bad teams. Chicken or egg?

Are there any examples out there I'm forgetting of rookie quarterbacks just coming in and lighting it up from Day One? Marino?

But Roffles was lucky enough to land on a team with playoff level talent. Most first round quarterbacks go to shit teams by definition. Then they are thrown into the mix much too early, only to get their brains smashed out through their ear holes... hello, David Carr. This is probably why a lot of spread quarterbacks wash out in the NFL; they're never given enough time to learn the pro game.

leavethecapital, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 02:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Peyton Manning, i guess. he broke a bunch of rookie records, right?

Gus Frerotte is Minnesota's option, which is to say not much of one. I'd probably be sticking with Tavaris Jackson. It's QB, it isn't like you can make a deal at this point to get someone else unless you are getting really desperate and calling old man Vinny.

Police said Marinovich, 38, ran from officers who tried to stop him about 1:15 a.m. Sunday for skateboarding near the Newport Pier boardwalk, where skateboarding is prohibited.

He was found hiding in a carport about 1:30 a.m., police Sgt. Evan Sailor said. After searching Marinovich, police found about one gram of methamphetamine, a metal spoon and a hypodermic needle, Sailor said.

There's some talk around about the Vikings making a play for Jeff Garcia, but I can't imagine that happening. The Bucs would be nuts to make the move to Griese permanent.

Yeah, but Chucky and Garcia hate each other.

Well the T-Jax debate will not be resolved this season: Frerotte named starter for rest of year.

Deserved recent Tarvaris hating aside, this really sucks and is all about a coach trying to not get fired.

effects:

1. replaces a chump with a chump, nothing gained
2. lets receivers off the hook when spotlight should be on them this week
3. trashes a whole pre-season of work on offense
4. completely undermines the good things about two unlucky defeats
5. damages team morale by underscoring that they are being coached by a cretin

i've never been so insulated (Roberto Spiralli), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 17:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Who's hating?!?!? I see two guys -- one a diehard Charger fan -- legitimately concerned about the mileage on LT's body, and looking at a rather frightening parallel. If anything, it's more like "pessimistic pragmatism" with a tiny dash of "ON NO THE COMMIES" paranoia.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 20:11 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm not worried abt LT, cuz i saw this coming (*goony smirk*)

for real tho, he's on the edge of 30 which is basically 90 in runningback years, and to my untrained eye he looked half a step slower last year. being half a step slower than the best RB in the game aint so bad tho, and i think with his skillset - he's wayyyyyyyyyyyy more versatile than SA ever was - he should be good for a while longer than yr typical RB, even if he isn't quite so dominant a year or two from now.
