2 weeks pass...

a video about rihanna smoking. and trippin. with a hot andro dude.

song's in the top 10.

surm, Thursday, 20 October 2011 00:50 (1 year ago) Permalink

gosh, it's already Rihanna's 15th most successful single to date! very exciting!

I was surprised by how intense the video is! Makes the hopelessness of the place seem the point of the song, rather than the finding of love. Ah I see r|t|c in fact predicted this upthread.

Isn't Britney doing a video like this too? Is UK housing estate chic suddenly a big thing this year?

Think I like this song now. It does need a big vocal climax though.

Tim F, Friday, 21 October 2011 21:53 (1 year ago) Permalink

One thing the video does quite well is to give some thematic purpose to the cheapness of Harris' synths, like: even the euphoria is borrowed, precarious, a facsimile of euphoria.

Tim F, Friday, 21 October 2011 21:59 (1 year ago) Permalink

That's generous

Number None, Friday, 21 October 2011 22:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

totally agree about the video meshing with the synths more than it does with the finding love theme, tim

surm, Saturday, 22 October 2011 00:06 (1 year ago) Permalink

That is a really super British video.

lol nice try but no

lex pretend, Saturday, 22 October 2011 06:42 (1 year ago) Permalink

how is rihanna-doing-skins NOT akin to those synths?

surm, Saturday, 22 October 2011 06:45 (1 year ago) Permalink

Surm, lex's world of pop Is one of absolutes. The evil of Harris is beyond redemption.

I don't know why but I think "Talk That Talk" is a brilliant name for a Rihanna album in 2011.

ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Saturday, 22 October 2011 09:04 (1 year ago) Permalink

tim...calvin harris is a dreadful producer. his style and his sound hasn't changed so why on earth would my opinion of him change?

lex pretend, Saturday, 22 October 2011 10:50 (1 year ago) Permalink

i agree talk that talk is a great album title though, and she's been recording with terius so i have hope that this song will be calvin harris's only presence on it

lex pretend, Saturday, 22 October 2011 10:52 (1 year ago) Permalink

I wasn't really saying you were wrong Lex.

quality stuff imo

r|t|c, Saturday, 22 October 2011 16:27 (1 year ago) Permalink

was it just me that found the quick frame of a big mouth billy bass after the first "hopeless place" so hilarious

rather found it hard to work myself up to the necessary level of intensity after that

r|t|c, Saturday, 22 October 2011 16:31 (1 year ago) Permalink

(let me just take that hopeless plaice joek away from you before you think of posting it.)

r|t|c, Saturday, 22 October 2011 16:32 (1 year ago) Permalink

really enjoying hearing this song on the radio. while i think it's pretty miraculous that the calvin harris produced single has some salvageable tastefulness & wouldn't nec look forward to an entire album produced by him & his ilk, i am kind of bored of terius/rihanna and i think a maybe tinny, shiny ravey album with dark/deep themes would be cool on a kelis - flesh tone tip

flopson, Saturday, 22 October 2011 17:34 (1 year ago) Permalink

we already had "only girl" and "s&m"

lex pretend, Saturday, 22 October 2011 17:37 (1 year ago) Permalink

every time i hear afrojack's "take over control" on the radio i think 'this should have been the new rihanna single' the same way people used to do w/ "whip my hair"

some dude, Saturday, 22 October 2011 17:53 (1 year ago) Permalink

xp of those 2 i only like "only girl," but i probably like it at least twice as much as "s&m" & maybe 5/4 as much as "we found love"

flopson, Saturday, 22 October 2011 17:55 (1 year ago) Permalink

rihanna/stargate >>>>>>>>> rihanna/terius anyway

some dude, Saturday, 22 October 2011 17:56 (1 year ago) Permalink

i mean obv they've done some of her dancey stuff but also some of her best r&b

some dude, Saturday, 22 October 2011 17:57 (1 year ago) Permalink

Doesn't seem to matter as much who produces her as what she/they are going for. Rated R packs an odd mix of producers but works as an album (and got some of the old barbados swagger out of her without going back to those producers or retracing her steps, plus just being more interesting overall. I'm thinking the new one will be more all over the place dancey stuff since that's what makes her the world's biggest.) Keeping this tempo up she will surely release another one next summer, and I hope it's full of island music

I don't know, the last three in a row have all come out in November, that seems to be her pace at this point. One a year, just in time for the holiday sales bump.

Am i the only one who keeps on hearing the intro on the radio, and absentmindedly expects/hopes/wishes teh rest of the tune to "Stereo" by Spooky to come tumbling in...?

bingo dabber acid, Monday, 24 October 2011 11:10 (1 year ago) Permalink

i'm pretty into this song but yeah it does feel like a third of a song repeated three times

the video is weird and not even in the way that it's trying to be Weird

J0rdan S., Monday, 24 October 2011 17:21 (1 year ago) Permalink

the repetition works for me. doesn't demand too much attention.

surm, Monday, 24 October 2011 23:56 (1 year ago) Permalink

it certainly doesn't

lex pretend, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 00:04 (1 year ago) Permalink

my bro's gf styled this video (everyone except Rihanna herself). I guess it's pretty Skins-y, I'm too old/fashion-ignorant to know really. Your man does look like Chris Brown, I will say that.

Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 00:06 (1 year ago) Permalink

xp the sound definitely grabs my attention, but the song structure does not feel laborious

overall, it seems like the divide btw the romance of this melody and the harshness of the synths and video mimics the blurred line btw lust and love in general as antidotes for despair

rihanna says they found love, but she also says that she has to let it go, reflecting this sort of ambiguity.
