uhm so which blackberry is better? the curve or the pearl or what?

pearl is fine if you don't mind the condensed keyboard. but if you're going to be pounding out a lot of text get the full sized one.

Curve is the sweet spot right now, I think. I have one(my second BB) it is a great phone and great email device, web browsing is a little old fashioned though. New Blackberries are imminent, though, with updated OS, interface etc.

I think you should wait as the browser promises to be a lot better and you can actually make use of the wifi as a network connection. They are talking about a July release:

i kinda want an iphone but im not into the touch screen and i doubt my work email will work on it since i can't even get my work email on my regular mac. also the at&t plans are $$$$.

the blackberry bold looks cool but it will probably be really expensive when it comes out? but maybe the prices of the other ones will go down? i really don't need to be on the cutting edge of technology.

work email is outlook. for whatever reason, remote access doesn't work on either safari or firefox, only on internet explorer (which is no longer available for macs).

I am posting from my blackberry wireless thingy I got yesterday. So far: can't access my work email, tho I know its possible since my boss sends me 30 emails a day from hers. And I can't figure out how to get to facebook apps despite installing the facebook thing. I really need to feed my cute cat damnit! But overall its cool.

you may not be able to do full facebook stuff... certain apps probably require java or flash or i don't know what technical stuff that is not avail on a bb.

you can upload pics, write on walls, read messages, etc. though.

How do I change my ringtone? Also where is the best place to download ringtones from? I have never even had a phone where I could do this lol

You change ringtone in Profiles, you can also set ring tones for people in your address book. I have no idea how to add ringtones other than the standard ones.

I just worked it out. In the Media player application, select the tune you want and hit the menu key and choose set as phone tune.

Or, in fact, hit browse at the top of the list of tones in the relavent section of profiles and you can pick any music file loaded onto the device.

Don't. The iPhone is pretty and the iPod in it is great but it's lacking some pretty basic functionality that practically every other smartphone has like:

- copy/paste
- camera zoom
- search on contacts/emails
- MMS

The next iPhone update will add the ability to purchase and install native applications on it without hacking it; meanwhile, there are a bazillion apps for the Blackberry that you can download and install now.

I think the iPhone 3G might be worth getting in about a year. The current one is not necessary unless you are just dying to have a pretty phone.

(Oh, I forgot to mention that the default way to set a custom ringtone on an iPhone is to pay Apple to let iTunes convert a snippet of a song for you.)

I just downloaded Opera Mini for my blackberry and it's improved the thing 1 million billion percent. Now browsing the web from my blackberry is like being on the actual internet rather than an even more aggravating than usual skeletal version of it. Opera Mini is great!

What does it mean when the Blackberry is on and everything seems normal with no messages or anything but the light blinks blue?

does it always do this? it could just be that you have the LED coverage indicator turned on.

No, this is the first time I have noticed it. Usually it's either green or red.

When you beat level 34 the game loops back to level 1, but autmatically the ball goes really fast and the puzzle starts "falling" downwards. I think I made it to level 20-ish on the 2nd run-through.

Blue - Blue is for Bluetooth. A flashing blue light indicates an active connection via bluetooth. Enable/disable this feature under Applications > Options > Bluetooth > Menu > Options > LED Connection Indicator: On/Off

Green - Green is for coverage indicator. Who really wants to be continuously reminded they are in a service area? Not me. Enable/disable this "feature" under Applications > Options > Screen/Keyboard > LED Coverage Indicator On/Off

Red- This is the good one! A flashing red light indicates a new message is waiting. Check under your messages folder for any unread items. You can choose to be notified of new messages visually under Applications > Profiles > Advanced > [Select profile you wish to modify] > [Select message type you wish to modify] > Repeat Notification LED Flashing/Off

Yellow - Yellow indicates that you are running out of battery. Find a charger quickly! Thanks Catt!

Ok am I an idiot? I'm trying to install opera mini, and it says to scroll down to the bottom of the user agreement and hit the accept button. Yet I see no accept button anywhere on the paqe?

That confused me too, but I don't remember what I did exactly. Could it be that you scroll, then hit the menu button and there's the "accept" option?

hey y'all, finally got one. Classic late adopter. I wanted an organizer phone so I didn't have to use my clunky planner all the time. Also honestly I just felt left out with all my fellow law students using them, lame as that is.

I wonder how it compares to an iphone. I don't think I could live without my iphone (hah!).

I got given a free Blackberry Storm the other week and within a few days went back to my old Curve. The touch-screen keyboard just seemed incredibly difficult to use and unresponsive, which kind of defies the point of the device. It looked great but I'm not sure whether it's objectively worse than the iPhone I just don't like touch-scree interfaces.

The old-skool Curve is classic for all time though. Also it has a much better version of Brickbreaker, which is all important.

I'm not that crazy about the Blackberry browser, but in a way it's a good thing internet isn't too easy to use on it so that I won't be wasting time on it all the time. The planner function, the ability to get e-mail and the keyboard are all great.

i need to get a blackberry this week. what kind should i get? i'll want to use it for typing a lot so no touch-screen keyboards. and where should i get it from, to get the best deals? says i need to alter my browser configuration but every time i change it to "internet browser" it resets itself automatically to "vodafone live" - why the fuck does it keep doing this??????

Mine did that for ages - I think you need to changeit in both Browser Configuration and General Properties. Still, Twitterberry works fine on mine, and it's exactly the same as yours, so no idea what's happening there.

but i changed it in general properties first as per the instructions! and it just keeps switching back automatically.

it also won't let me log into twitter AT ALL while browsing. AAARGH i hate this stupid machine.

Try whichever one you aren't doing.

So that would be Options -> Advanced Options -> Browser, and then change the default browser configuration that way.

I have a second hand Blackberry in a drawer. I broke my current phone at the weekend and spent all Sunday afternoon trying to figure out all the hows/whats/whys of it before I decided to just give up and stick my SIM in an old Nokia 3310

Pretty happy with the new Blackberry Curve (I think mine is 8330). The newer browser is a huge improvement. I kind of don't want an elaborate gaming/music/app device so much as just a good way to check and send e-mails on the go and occasionally get directions or a quick food recommendation. I find the BB well-suited to this and I like the BB keyboard (probably the main reason I didn't switch to another brand). My stubby fingers and touch screens don't get along.

what are the best settings? i find that when the list of threads comes up its in real tiny text so i zoom in but then have to select 'column view' to be able to read it properly, same with each thread too. is there a way of setting the blackberry browser to do this automatically?

Saw a review of BlackBerry yesterday by Matt Zoller Seitz, who I like as a TV writer. Didn't read it, but I've seen the film now and will. I know he liked it--surprised.

I found the three principles so hard to take--one yells and scowls nonstop; one is a cartoon geek; the David Foster Wallace guy wears the same dopey expression the entire film--I wanted out after about half an hour. (When Saul Rubinek appears, he puts those three actors to shame just by acting human-like. Rich Sommer--Mad Men's Harry Crane!--does all right too.) The soundtrack is much better than Air's, but to little effect. (Didn't get "Waterloo Sunset" at the end for a few seconds, but then, duh, I figured it out.)

I've never owned a cell phone, but I associate the BlackBerry with Obama in 2008, so having everything falling apart at that exact moment (a bit earlier even) was somewhat confusing.

It was all right enough as a film, a watchable trifle but the leads are indeed one-note aside from Beruchel. I gotta give credit to makeup/costumes departments though in that I didn't recognize either Cary Elwes or Michael Ironside, and their names are right there in the credits.

I'm sure it's not my thing, but Glenn Howerton screaming is, so I'll still give it a watch

I completely missed out on Blackberries. They definitely had a pop-culture moment in the mid-2000s, when someone like Paris Hilton would be widely known for using hers. Some called them crackberries because they were apparently so addictive. But what features did they have that garnered that much attention? Was it just their web-browsing and texting capabilities? Throughout their heyday, I was on old Nokia bricks and flip phones. When I graduated from those, smartphones had already been a thing for several years.

According to the movie, phone + web + texting was revolutionary. But, as Paris Hilton might say, I am so not the person to answer that.
