There’s never been a civilization that has rewritten what marriage and family means and survived.

I'm sorry, Rev Huckabee, but can you back that up with any relevant facts whatsoever?

Michael White, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

I hate Huckabees.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I get the sense that what he REALLY wants to say is that civilizations were destroyed BECAUSE they "changed" the definition of marriage - problem is there's no facts that back that up either.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

What civilizations changed the def'n of marriage, anyways?

libcrypt, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:45 (sixteen years ago) link

there are all kinds of polygamous "civilizations" that have survived to the present day, for one thing (Mormons, Islam, etc.)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link

These types really need to stay in church and stop running for public office. I just wrote the understatement of the year.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought he meant something like "Greek civ", but anyways.

So there are no Mormons and no Islam today?

libcrypt, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:47 (sixteen years ago) link

What civilizations changed the def'n of marriage, anyways?

Well, pretty much ALL of them, if you count by his definition of "marriage" and all its attendent expectations.

Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:48 (sixteen years ago) link

obviously he is thinking of Sodom & Gommorrah, but even so, he's still wrong.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Greece and Rome were all about the man-boy love but legally they still hewed to pretty trad-Western monogomous marriage, afaik.

this, of course, does not help Huckabee's case at all

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Greeks may have changed the def'n of love, but not marriage.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Eeeexcept for the part where you married women much your junior/inferior and then confined them to the house for years and years and took all their money and property and their fertility and decided whether the children they gave birth to should live or not. Or maybe he'd like that.

Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:52 (sixteen years ago) link

the thing is I don't think there's any civilization to-date that legally sanctioned same-sex marriage prior to the 20th century, so basically wtf is he on about

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link

The only part that really matters to Suckabee is whether marriage means same-polarity, not whether men can have a bazillion wives they treat like shit, obv.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I love that a mostly non-breeding minority of homosexuals on an increasingly over-populated planet is what will spell the end of humankind. If this is really the fruit of his capacity for reason, I don't him anywhere near the levers of power.

Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:06 (sixteen years ago) link

My problem with this line of thinking is that marriage, as yet unredefined, is finding it increasingly hard to keep population falling in developed countries already. I knew when they allowed divorce and decriminalized cohabitation we were all going to be fucked.

Michael White, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think overpopulation is really an issue, its more one of resource organization and allocation but whatevs, that's a different thread

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Because it [civil unions] really is a precursor toward marriage. Once the government says this relationship is in essence similar to or equal to a marriage—we’re not going to call it that, but that’s what it is—and you grant it the same basic rights as marriage, then you’ve effectively done it.

This is reprehensible.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:31 (sixteen years ago) link

gay marriage will only lead to the GAYEST KIDS EVER

pc user, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:33 (sixteen years ago) link

As a follow-up, I also think gay people should be able to get married, but Huckabee's line of reasoning on civil unions falls somewhere between evil and just indefensible (Why is it not okay for a gay couple to have a civil union that allow one to visit their partner in a nursing home but it is okay for a gay couple to navigate around those restrictions via a power of attorney?; That's very thin reasoning if you're worried -- as Huckabee apparently is -- about protecting the "fabric of society" from homosexuals).

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Because at least with power of attorney, there's a possibility of having a conservative, traditionalist (i.e. bigoted) judge overturn/overrule a nursing home visit. It gives more hope to maintaining the status quo than a law granting civil unions would; if such things are decided on a case-by-case basis in the courts, then at least some of them will swing in Huckabee's favor.

stephen, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:40 (sixteen years ago) link

how does power of attorney work in this case, Daniel? My dad just got it to handle my grandmother's affairs, but I don't understand the intricacies.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:40 (sixteen years ago) link

the 'power of attorney' option can really only provide for family visitation / medical / end of life issues, but doesn't provide for the tax and other shared benefits (spousal health insurance, e.g.) that go along with marriage.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Alfred: There are many different uses for a power of attorney ("POA"). It's my understanding that they're used in this context most often when someone can't act on their own behalf; the POA transfers the right to act to someone who is in a better position to take action and make decisions (e.g., they suffer from dementia and can no longer handle their own financial affairs). But POA's aren't used as "backstage passes" in the way Huckabee implies.

To be fair, this isn't my area of the law. Someone else here may know more.

-- Dr Morbius, Tuesday, December 11, 2007 10:05 PM

Yeah. As I recall the Angels showed up in Sodom and hung out at Lot's place. Everybody in Sodom was like "let us see (rape?) these angels, guy," and he said "rape my daughters instead, they're virgins!"

And then God killed everybody in Sodom except for Lot & his daughters, either because they were gay or because they wanted to "know" the angels, depending on who you ask.

This. Remember, this shit is tribalism. Celebration & reinforcement of the in-group, denigration of the out-group. Loudly shouting to yourself and your neighbors of your stance. Repping for your team no what heinous shit they did or how wrong they are. Being part of an exciting thing that you can join in with your friends.

What happens when progressive evangelists write about this stuff:

So please stop redefining Christianity as a superficial cultural tribe that self-identifies through its particular tastes in facial hair, “relevant” fashion, political stances, and the culture war loyalty test of the week (despite what it says in the picture your friend shared with you on facebook, you really won’t burn in hell if you don’t share it with 10 other people). Instead of all the superficial tribalism, be disciples who take a stand against your own sin. Be evangelists who are acutely attentive to navigating around other peoples’ stumbling blocks and loving them into the truth. Be witnesses of the beauty you have seen in Jesus Christ. Don’t let anyone trick you into being any less.

Problem is, plenty of folks are by nature far more into marching behind a standard, any standard carried by their authority figures their entire culture, personality, and upbringing have hardwired obedience into. Works the same with a national flag. What the standard or flag means don't mean shit, it's about marching behind it.

These dudes are "Christian" as a brand name only; theyre much more into following the State Religion of the Empire than listening to some dude who said hey we should actually care about poor people. The tenets of the religion don't mean squat, group affiliation does.

Whenever rightwing doofuses pop up to make proclamations about why they're doing what they're doing, I just replace the word "Christian" with "Ohio State," and it makes far more sense.

Fiendish Doctor Wu (kingfish), Friday, 3 August 2012 15:18 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, people are complicated and plenty of smart people believe things for decidedly non-smart reasons. I know folks who believe in new age medical bollocks and libertarianism, and it's the same reaction.

"it's a christian school but i dunno some of the kids don't act very christian"

Exactly. This. The term is a marketing/tribal/brand name you use to sell shitty pop music to rightwing authoritarian followers. It has dick-all to do with the source of the name or paying attention to the teachings of some itinerant revolutionary rabbi who had some good ideas tromping around Asia Minor during the reign of Tiberius.

It's one of the reasons I don't identify myself as "Christian", but rather as "drunken Protestant" or "loosely Presbyterian"

Fiendish Doctor Wu (kingfish), Friday, 3 August 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link

idk who gets to determine what "acting Christian" means, does it just mean acting like the ideals? pretty sure people confuse "you are supposed to do this" with "you will act like this at all times because you are infallible"

Yes, and it's another skirmish for people desperately wanting to prove that they're not victims of modernity by bolstering themselves and loudly chanting their tribal affinity and righteousness to drown out any possible internal doubt or anxiety.

Check the Slacktivist link I posted a coupla days ago; American conservative/Republican/evangelical culture is _all_ about declaring the correct Stances, and ostracizing those who don't reaffirm some plank as zealously as others.

Here, this gawker bit is good:

All Meals Are Possible Through Christ: Hate-Bingeing on the Chicken

...People gathered to celebrate the wonder-working power of redemption through Christ—which, instead of what all those pipe-organ songs seem to suggest, is cause for intense, simmering resentment.

[....]

Indeed, you could be forgiven for assuming that this was solely a protest in favor of religion, but it was as much about Free Market Jesus as it was about the original version, with the poor people and the repudiation of material things. A large motivating factor for the Chick-Fil-A celebrants was aggrieved rhetoric from the far right that portrayed gay activist groups as violating or suppressing the First Amendment in two ways. One, that citizens boycotting a business constitutes active suppression of speech, and that Obama/The Gays/The Left were "criminalizing" pro-Christian speech. Two, that the original text of the First Amendment read, "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, unless that speech or assembly affects a corporation's bottom line."
