still 4-2 martinez but this is not Martinez "coasting."

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 2 October 2011 03:43 (twelve years ago) link

Martinez's KO power is legit huh?

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:00 (twelve years ago) link

apparently Noshioka-Marquez was awesome.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:00 (twelve years ago) link

Barker really fought a great fight strategically but Martinez is kind of a force of nature right now. He shows a real ability to absorb punishment & just keep fighting his fight until he gets his way. That KO punch was weird tho I gotta say

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:06 (twelve years ago) link

based on how Barker fought I doubt it was a dive though.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:10 (twelve years ago) link

HBO should have shown Nishioka-Marquez instead of that undercard Andy Lee hypefest btw.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:10 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't think it was a dive, it was just -- he hadn't been absorbing that much punishment. He'd gotten tagged some but had been so game right up into the last round that it was like - wait - the punch that beat you landed on your glove?

Everybody's saying Nishioka-Marquez was awesome, seems like we never get to see the good Japanese fighters of whom there are plenty. It was on Fox Deportes which is an extra 5 bucks a month here which I should probably go ahead and spend

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:21 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I seriously considered getting it for this month just for that fight. Roman Gonzalez looked amazing on the undercard apparently.

I wonder if we'll see Noshioka-Donaire?

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:48 (twelve years ago) link

oh man that'd smoke

some of my fight DVDs I get Asian fighters who never really got a lot of US tv time like Pongsaklek Wongjongkam, so many good light-and-smaller weight guys...HBO should put together a "Window On Japan" series or something to showcase some Japanese fighters, if they got their moment people would dig it

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 2 October 2011 05:09 (twelve years ago) link

nothing happened in boxing today

Donaire/Narvaez in about ten minutes here

Donaire looks huge

I've always wondered: how hard would it really be to just send over a couple announcers, a microphone and one cameraman? The presentation for those Japanese shows is great already, and I'm sure they'd charge a pittance for the (American) rights to the fights. There's always 4 or 5 title fights in Japan each year that are big-time battles between top 10 guys in their weight class. And if you really wanted, you could chip in some money and make even bigger fights there.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 23 October 2011 04:28 (twelve years ago) link

Omar Narvaez: please go back to Europe and your meaningless title defenses.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 23 October 2011 06:22 (twelve years ago) link

Mark Cuban's HDNET is already doing that with MMA. They send an Australian and American (Frank Trigg) to Japan with a translator and use the already existing production.

xpost.

Zachary Taylor, Sunday, 23 October 2011 06:22 (twelve years ago) link

The other thing that's been happening wayyy too much lately is the big nets (especially HBO) allowing really awesome fights to end up on Fox Deportes or Box Azteca. Serious title fights that are guaranteed action. And in their stead we get dull setup fights for HBO's favored prospects or garbage title fights that will obviously be boring.

Jesus, otm. That guy's style was terrible. I'm with Donaire, what the fuck's he supposed to do, bust ass fighting a guy who doesn't wanna fight, but still...that fight sucked

good fight on HBO in a minute here, Kirkland v. Angulo

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 6 November 2011 02:53 (twelve years ago) link

HOLY SHIT ROUND ONE ROUND OF THE YEAR.

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:11 (twelve years ago) link

fucking A everybody needs to see that. get the backstory on kirkland beforehand for maximum fuuuuuuuucck that was amazing.

crap i was about to flip that on and got distracted by "aladdin"

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:16 (twelve years ago) link

round 2 was also unfuckingbelievable

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:17 (twelve years ago) link

wait is it still on

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:17 (twelve years ago) link

whoa good last minute of that round

angulo's face is fuuucked up, he's going down next round - kirkland landed a couple really nice straight lefts

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:21 (twelve years ago) link

pretty impressed that he's still standing tbh, kirkland outpunched him like 35-7 that round

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:24 (twelve years ago) link

That was one of the best fights I've seen live. Just banging away until one guy had nothing left. Angulo pretty much left most of his power back in round one but he stayed in and kept showing up for every exchange.

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:32 (twelve years ago) link

round 1, seriously though...see it, if you didn't. just incredible.

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:33 (twelve years ago) link

rematch plz

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:33 (twelve years ago) link

they're talking Kirkland-Alvarez. Alvarez will eat Kirkland imo.

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:34 (twelve years ago) link

Kirkland sucks. Absolutely horrible defense and now he has a glass chin. He should rematch Angulo for the $$$$.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:36 (twelve years ago) link

one of the great things about boxing is that mediocre talents can make for amazing fights through good matchmaking.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:37 (twelve years ago) link

It's really a shame that Angulo punched himself out so totally. A smarter fighter would have taken Kirkland about to the two-minute mark in round 2 and then lowered the boom. Max K. is freaking out with love for Kirkland right now but I don't think Kirkland could really stand in with a disciplined fighter - he's not the only boxer who's well-conditioned, though to hear the commentators you'd think he invented training

super-otm and the reason the 70s & 80s at the Olympic Auditorium in LA saw some of the best matches ever between fighters no-one outside of southern California remembers: the promoters cared only about putting asses in seats, and that meant delivering fights that'd last a few round and provide maximum action

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:40 (twelve years ago) link

Kellerman's overrating of Kirkland is hilarious.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:40 (twelve years ago) link

it's great how HBO pinned so much hope on angulo and kirkland becoming an eventual super fight PPV but since they were both exposed horribly as mediocrities they were like "oh well, fuck it, put it on Boxing After Dark against the biggest college football game of the year"

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:43 (twelve years ago) link

btw I'm pretty sure in order to get the shot against Alvarez, Kirkland will have to fight Martirosyan. Who is too good for him.

anybody shelling out to watch manny ring marquez's bell tonight?

Matt, you're a Vegas oddsmaker. Your job is to set realistic odds that'll get as many people as possible to bet, but which will shield you from having to pay out too much. What do you give the better who wants "Marquez by decision"?

bodog will apparently give 18/1

johnny crunch, Sunday, 13 November 2011 02:50 (twelve years ago) link

I see 10/1 on bodog

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 13 November 2011 02:53 (twelve years ago) link

18/1 seems about right to me. I think Pacquiao takes it inside of 9 although when was the last time Pac was showing knockout power: 2009! He really should have knocked out Clottey. Decent chance that he just goes to another points victory unless he's under heavy fire.

Marquez is as good an opponent as Manny can/will face, so i don't begrudge either of them making an event of it or struggling to finish it. watched some poor commonwealth bouts tonight with a distinct lack of will to show knockout power but let's be honest in a bout like this anybody wd settle for outscoring the other guy

Ridin' Skyrims (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 13 November 2011 03:01 (twelve years ago) link
