Seconded. The muted color palette is really nice.

americansuburbx is a good website, been reading a few of the john szarkovski articles and interviews this weekend.

Yeah I always check in there to see what's changing. They've got quite a few great essays that are wonderful to find online.
Before heading out to Baltimore for a few days, one more:

downloaded the Nik Color Efex 4 demo to see what it is - 99% of the filters are useless and the vignette takes some work, but the film modules are quite nice (if you eliminate the fake grain). Not worth $200, but if the student discount gets it down to $70ish, I might buy it.

i can't remember if this was the thread we were talking about ways of displaying your photos online in, but, just to revive: so many nice sites are made with indexexhibit, & i've never got around to trying it because i'm kinda satisfied with what i've got. but just in case anyone's still looking. this is a neat example: http://k3rstijanw3rdal.com/project/family/ (i googleproofed, es for 3s)

am still really on a tri-x 400 kick, since starting shooting with it a while ago; its so radiant & lovely, there's something really other-worldly about it, & it's the only v midtonish b&w stock i've ever loved:

This one was a happy accident, but it's been fun playing with my new Olympus 45mm f/1.8 :)

sweet! the 45mm/1.8 and the 12/2 inspire lots of gear lust inside me

A bit more high contrast that usual. I must have been just exposing for highlights on this. Pretty sure that if I had a lab do the scan it would look bad.

Pictures of old people asleep in public almost feel like cheating here, but I snapped this guy on a field trip a couple days ago.

Surreal. I mean, it's not that strange, but seeing that combination of things in a nice-looking neighbourhood is disorienting.

An acquaintance had some ink drawings in a showing last weekend. This guy was there, an artist of some local repute, apparently.

Lovely textures! Are those mostly out-of-camera, or have you played with curves a bit?

Millsner, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 05:55 (twelve years ago) link

I import into Lightroom, correct for the lens, sharpen a little, then export to Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 for B&W conversion.

amazing, dayo, for real, everything there
i was looking back at yr older IHKH shots a while ago & was thinking you're into a pretty like open field, generally, shooting more towards 16 - right? they're great, they look kinda 'societal' that way.

but those are all really just something else. the elevator.

thanks guys! LBI you've some great atmosphere, esp. in that second shot.

hah what does it mean shooting more towards 16?

this feels so like being BUSTED, i really don't have the vocabulary to talk about photography so was erring on the side of vagueness. i mean that your aperture is generally closer to being at 16, & leaving everything fairly visible & in focus, rather than limiting the DOF. i would stride in and say 'wide open', but i just heard someone use that to suggest what i thought of as being the opposite - as in like a v narrow field in focus - so i'm all confused. this wasn't meant to turn into a photo-vocab-digression, it's just it seems like such a crucial part of what makes those pics so good & subsequently what must be kind of an ideal in taking street photos, to some degree; that everything is contextualised by some idea of the sprawl of where it's taking place.
