"hunting knife" was my #1!

queen latifah approximately (donna rouge), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:11 (3 years ago) Permalink

I, for one, am really shocked "Awful Bliss" didn't make the top 60. the final three is pretty much obvious now.

V79, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:12 (3 years ago) Permalink

Surgical Focus?! Really?! No way.
Game of Pricks
Motor Away
King and Caroline? Did that one already place?

3. "Tractor Rape Chain" (Bee Thousand, 1994) [765 points, 28 votes, 4 #1 votes]

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:13 (3 years ago) Permalink

I would like to hear a bluegrass take of this song

ℓ٥ﻻ ﻉ√٥υ (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:15 (3 years ago) Permalink

Awesome. I do wish Glenn Campbell had covered this instead of Hold On Hope.

righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:15 (3 years ago) Permalink

Johnny, you should reveal #2 and #1 at the same time. Once #2 comes up it will be obvious which one will win it.

righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:16 (3 years ago) Permalink

Hunting Knife is a perfect track, almost too perfect - I prefer the messier ones. I imagine that TRC would be a lot less popular than it is if the lyrics were different, which of course isn't an argument that it's overrated but IMO it's a less anthemic track than people give it credit for.

YES! <3

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:17 (3 years ago) Permalink

that said TRC is Chumbawumba-level catchy.

skip, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:18 (3 years ago) Permalink

it's a less anthemic track than people give it credit for

the way it crescendoes on "PARALLEL lines ... BETTER yet" is pretty anthemic

I listened to a long bluegrass cover of Witchita Lineman last night. I'll have to share the link with yall if you're interested

ℓ٥ﻻ ﻉ√٥υ (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:20 (3 years ago) Permalink

By the way, what is a tractor rape chain?

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:21 (3 years ago) Permalink

You don't want to know.

Jeff, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:22 (3 years ago) Permalink

I have no idea.

Jeff, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:22 (3 years ago) Permalink

oh, you know

queen latifah approximately (donna rouge), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:23 (3 years ago) Permalink

the acoustic intro of TRC is so classic, it shouldn't work as a lead-in to the song but it does! that's genius right there.

tylerw, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:23 (3 years ago) Permalink

yeah, great guitars all the way through.

You don't want to know.

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:25 (3 years ago) Permalink

Which is to say that I also have no idea.

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:25 (3 years ago) Permalink

speed up slow down go all around yeah <-- kind of stupid, but sounds good with that melody because it's only such a tune that will carry a song called "tractor rape chain" into the hearts of the people

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:26 (3 years ago) Permalink

the idea that you can "get wet" on it is what intrigues/disturbs me most about it

queen latifah approximately (donna rouge), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:27 (3 years ago) Permalink

in the first place it's probably just paranoia

tylerw, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:27 (3 years ago) Permalink

I had heard it was inspired by some news of the weird article about a farmer who tried to do autoerotic asphyxiation by tying something to his tractor wheel. Maybe that's BS, I dunno.

dmr, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:27 (3 years ago) Permalink

Ohio's motto is "the heart of it all"
It's a thing I know, it's a thing I believe in.

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:28 (3 years ago) Permalink

always thought of it as a chain of tractor's raping the earth or something? i dunno about the rest of it

bluelips, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:29 (3 years ago) Permalink

"Big School" isn't going to be appearing now :(

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:30 (3 years ago) Permalink

dmr, that story is too great not to be true; it's a thing I believe in.

dmr, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:32 (3 years ago) Permalink

so its motor away and game of pricks?
i hold on hope that Hold On Hope isnt gonna win this

nostormo, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:32 (3 years ago) Permalink

Big School was my #10. Surprised it is no where in the top 60. It always seemed to be the most requested song at shows that was never played.

Jeff, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:32 (3 years ago) Permalink

auditorium/motor away! can't separate them

bluelips, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:33 (3 years ago) Permalink

a chain of tractor's raping the earth or something?

That makes sense considering Bob's lyrical interests in "earth"/"planet"/etc.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:33 (3 years ago) Permalink

READY?!!!!!!! drumroll please...

nostormo, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:35 (3 years ago) Permalink

Jeff, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:35 (3 years ago) Permalink

and thats good

nostormo, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:35 (3 years ago) Permalink

My #1 won at least

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:35 (3 years ago) Permalink

always thought of it as a chain of tractor's raping the earth or something? i dunno about the rest of it

Yeah Pollard refers to something along those lines in an interview in the 33 1/3 book.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:36 (3 years ago) Permalink

WOW! It won by almost 300 points.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:36 (3 years ago) Permalink

same results in the Alien Lanes poll, too.

i wanna ask you a question: what is the best song in GBV's Alien Lanes?

nostormo, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:36 (3 years ago) Permalink

"Game Of Pricks" was my #1 of course, as it was the first GBV song I fell in love with! you could never be stroooooong, you can only be freeeeee....

V79, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:37 (3 years ago) Permalink

Am disappointed there weren't more bob solo tracks. Definitely deserve to be in the top 60.
