that video is great -- there are lots of recognizable places, but the parts i like best are the anonymous intersections.

some lady (La Lechera), Thursday, 22 September 2011 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

flopson, Thursday, 22 September 2011 23:27 (twelve years ago) link

The rhythmic orchestration of the rock band Cave typically unwinds slowly but steadily over lengthy songs. They are often called "roller-rinkin’ rock for the next generation."

Confused about what that phrase means? The band sat down with Eight Forty-Eight to explain what exactly roller-rinkin' rock is and why they are not your typical jammers

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Friday, 14 October 2011 18:42 (twelve years ago) link

Gonna see them tonight. So stoked.
Cooper insists that they are a funk band now. Hafta laugh.

Trip Maker, Friday, 14 October 2011 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

I'm going tomorrow night, will report back on level of funk.

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Friday, 14 October 2011 21:43 (twelve years ago) link

annoyed that they seem to have tour dates scheduled in every US city except mine.
this, still. jealous you guys are seeing them.

tylerw, Friday, 14 October 2011 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

Not to rub it in, but I'm gonna get to see them twice on this tour!
Which is cool and all, but the fact that I can't you know BE IN THE BAND and actually go on tour still kind of stings.

Trip Maker, Friday, 14 October 2011 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

crash the stage! "i'm back in the band!!"

tylerw, Friday, 14 October 2011 22:11 (twelve years ago) link

I get to every now and again.
It's the long hours in the van with the dudes that I really crave though.

Trip Maker, Friday, 14 October 2011 22:13 (twelve years ago) link

And they are playing tonight and tomorrow with ANOTHER band that I used to be in.
It's going to be really great to be in the same room with so many good friends.

Trip Maker, Friday, 14 October 2011 22:15 (twelve years ago) link

three weeks pass...

so psyched, they're playing in Denver next week! at the very same mysterious head shop as last year.

tylerw, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 17:47 (twelve years ago) link

Hey, all right.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 17:49 (twelve years ago) link

Playing in my town on Friday night!

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

they played for free on monday but i didn't go because i saw that show a few weeks ago

Yasmine Teeth (La Lechera), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 18:13 (twelve years ago) link

lol, well that was a bummer. drove an hour down to denver for this show, sat through two opening acts. then, they announce that THREE more bands are going to play at the club next door, and everyone should go watch those. Wait around, wait around, wait around, and it's 1:15am on a Sunday night and i'm literally falling asleep on my feet. last opening act still going strong. i guess i'm getting old or something, but i can't wait until 2am for a band to play! yeesh.

tylerw, Monday, 14 November 2011 15:40 (twelve years ago) link

jeez, is that a regular mysterious head shop procedure? driving back home in a few minutes, gonna blast the album once more.

willem, Monday, 14 November 2011 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

ha i don't know, they played at a reasonable hour the last time! i'm all for playing alternative venues and whatever, but this just got kind of silly.

tylerw, Monday, 14 November 2011 15:53 (twelve years ago) link

Bummer city. Sorry to hear that.
They did a cover of DJ Funk's "XTC" on Friday night, it was amazing.

Trip Maker, Monday, 14 November 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry to hear that tyler, but that would have been annoying to me too. I'm not sure I'd have even made it as late as you did on a Sunday night.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 14 November 2011 17:00 (twelve years ago) link

just got word that my friend stuck it out. they went on 1:45-ish. "it was awesome," he said.

tylerw, Monday, 14 November 2011 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

That is way too late. I'm sure it wasn't the band's decision.

Trip Maker, Monday, 14 November 2011 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

yeah we talked to one of the dudes who put the show together and he was like "i don't think cave will ever play here again."

tylerw, Monday, 14 November 2011 17:06 (twelve years ago) link

Hah, as they shouldn't. Shitty shitty thing to do to a band and the audience.

grandavis, Monday, 14 November 2011 20:59 (twelve years ago) link

i do think they got a lot of free weed though, so ...

tylerw, Monday, 14 November 2011 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

They described the place to me as less a head shop, more a speak easy. It sounded a lot like this "record store" that operated in my town called "K3v1n's World" that really seemed like a front for the proprietor to get underage kids drunk. Did you get some BBQ, at least?

Trip Maker, Monday, 14 November 2011 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

i missed the bbq! it must be more of a clubhouse kinda place than an actual place of business. though there is a sign out front now! they actually had a pretty awesome cooler full of microbrews.
night wasn't a total loss, got to hang out w/ some friends, drink a few beers. just hope cave plays somewhere slightly better organized next time!

tylerw, Monday, 14 November 2011 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

one month passes...

Cooper says there will be a Bitchin Bajas sounds and visuals event happening at the Music Box in Chicago "in weeks." Didn't see anything on their website, don't know the exact date. New LP+DVD later in the year.

Trip Maker, Friday, 6 January 2012 02:27 (twelve years ago) link

in TWO weeks jesus

Trip Maker, Friday, 6 January 2012 02:28 (twelve years ago) link

OoooOoooo!! Thanks for posting, will read the emails from the music box now. Last one announced an appearance by Crispin Glover.

La Lechera, Friday, 6 January 2012 02:46 (twelve years ago) link

From Drag City email:

Drag City and the Music Box are crossing streams for a one night only screening of Dragonslayer, the award winning documentary from director Tristan Patterson and executive producer Christine Vachon. That’s a whole lotta trouble makers right there. But we couldn’t just slap a couple of moving images on the wall and be like, “Hey! Show up to this shit#!” So we’re gonna make an event of it: On January 18th the folks at Rodan in Wicker Park are letting us squat their place and throw a party from 7-10pm with some semi-talented people making music while we preview the film. Then the night of the screening Bitchin’ Bajas will perform with visual artist Olivia Wyatt as people gather in their seats. The organ player reduced to dust! Plus, since the dee-slayer is a certain shade of rock and roll, Mayor Daley will jam some tunes before the curtain opens on what may very well be the best documentary about skateboarding or the suburbs ever. To add just one more thing to make this event unforgettable, the director of the film, Tristan Patterson, will be answering questions via Skype after the movie is over.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 6 January 2012 03:07 (twelve years ago) link

That sounds like fun. I'm glad Mayor Daley is still a going concern.

Trip Maker, Friday, 6 January 2012 03:27 (twelve years ago) link

three months pass...

I'm making the trip up to Chicago tomorrow with the Columbia, MO, band (Hott Lunch) that is opening for Cave at the Empty Bottle tomorrow night. My dear old friend,Jeremy, is back in the band; the dirty rotten milk man has moved on. Should be an interesting time. Free if you RSVP!

There's a ton of Bitchin Bajas action in the works, too. The quadrophonic presentation of the latest film and music collaboration with Olivia Wyatt was really great.

Gonna be a good weekend.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 15:53 (eleven years ago) link

Heeeey I'm going to that show and so are some other ilxors!

two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Friday, 20 April 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

Awesome! Sunday is Cooper's birthday. Really looking forward to seeing my old friends. It would be cool to meet some ilxors, too.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 15:56 (eleven years ago) link

oh man i really wish i could go to this show, but we've had some pretty bad news at home that will keep me in this weekend. have fun for me though!

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 20 April 2012 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

yes i should be at this show too with my (very occasional ilxor) wife

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 20 April 2012 16:51 (eleven years ago) link

wish i was going to be at this show. jealous :'(

tylerw, Friday, 20 April 2012 16:54 (eleven years ago) link

tell the band i'm still mad about my last denver experience with them. gahhh!

tylerw, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:05 (eleven years ago) link

Permanent Records putting out a comp of pre-Cave (and every other Columbia band) the Pows for Record Store Day. Only 100 copies, which is not very many, but the one song i heard was cool. you got any other info Trip?

mizzell, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:06 (eleven years ago) link

WTF? I am probably on that thing. Holy shit. That was a project Cooper was working on years ago that I thought he gave up on.
I don't have any info. Wish I did!

Tyler: They told me all about that Denver show. That weird head shop morphed into something even seedier in the time between their two gigs there.
Said they would never play that place again.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:10 (eleven years ago) link

ha, yeah, there were definitely some bad vibes that second time around! i'm not really mad, just bummed i didn't get to see them. they can play at my house next time, i am a cool guy.

tylerw, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

Oh I see, it's a Pows comp. Ha ha, it's sweet how much Liz and Lance love the Pows.
The main songwriter from that band, Zach (also of HEATER), is living in Vermont on going to Carpentry school.
He hasn't given up on rock, but who knows when or how he'll make his next move.
I think the record Permanent is releasing is the very first Pows session from when Rex and Zach were maybe 15.

xp I knew you weren't really mad, Tyler.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

The project I was referring to previously was a comp of a bunch of area bands that would have featured the (extremely rough) demo recordings of MOST HIGH, the best band that I was ever in, which feature Dan and Jeremy (now of Cave) and a dude named Drew who lives in Portland now and plays in a group called Loose Values.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:16 (eleven years ago) link

I don't have any info. Wish I did!

the last permanent records email had a long description of it - i'll ilx-mail it to you!

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Friday, 20 April 2012 17:46 (eleven years ago) link

or actually, just check it out here: http://www.permanentrecordschicago.com/news.php

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Friday, 20 April 2012 17:47 (eleven years ago) link

Cool, thanks, Z_

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:49 (eleven years ago) link

i never even saw the pows play, i only saw the cover show that lance + liz did in Maude Vintage that one time in como

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Friday, 20 April 2012 17:50 (eleven years ago) link

Man, they really were good. They were just kids.
That description is kind of cryptic in that Lance never says what is actually on it.
I guess it's probably selections from both Pows records, maybe some Saber Tooth, maybe something from that first recording session?
Curious.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

does lance write those descriptions, or liz? liz wrote me an incredible letter of recommendation to help get me into grad school. i'll always owe her big time for that?
