Is the American sitcom ready for a hipster sweetheart?

symsymsym, Saturday, 17 September 2011 20:44 (3 years ago) Permalink

Had to put up with this as required viewing of this week's flights. Couldn't bear to turn up tge volume, but seriously just looked like mind-meltingly hott chick with awesome perfect hair wears black-rimmed "nerd" glasses and lives with three brahs yet has issues.

Apparently in this universe, Nerve.com never broke wide online dating so she has apparently no recourse but to suffer thru life as no dude could possibly handle her "quirks"

I read that Atlantic article, and subconsciously hi-5'vd myself for not buying the issue

It's something like a 3 page diatribe on why America "needs" an "alt" icon. And just sorta serves as obligatory hype to aforementioned show.

Soooo, what quirky hipster band is Zooey gonna like on her new show? Will it be Belle and Sebastian like in 500 Days of Summer? Will it be something quirkier? I'm reminded of Ted Mosby's love for The Unicorns on How I Met Your Mother

that's cute, but it's WRONG (CaptainLorax), Monday, 19 September 2011 04:54 (2 years ago) Permalink

Well, I saw her list of favourite bands, albums, etc. in some Music magazine, and it seems she has similar tastes in older music as our Alice.

So, hmm..

Yeah how dare grown men be into a 31 year old woman, fuckin' pedos.

Esp. if they're younger than her, that's just not right

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Monday, 19 September 2011 12:05 (2 years ago) Permalink

So, older is OK, right?

Mark G, Monday, 19 September 2011 13:09 (2 years ago) Permalink

think bi,son's point was that most dudes seem to think of her as like nine years old which is weird

k3vin k., Monday, 19 September 2011 13:10 (2 years ago) Permalink

Well, as I say, she's sort of like Alice, who's 11. Then again, I don't 'fancy' Zoo, but then again, I'm not 18 or whatever...

Mark G, Monday, 19 September 2011 13:11 (2 years ago) Permalink

She's 31

I don't really know anything about the woman, tbh, but that dark hair/ blue eyes combination is nice (OK you can post those pictures of Hitler now)

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Monday, 19 September 2011 13:16 (2 years ago) Permalink

Well, I don't really pay much attention to the stuff she's acted in, so I'm not too knowledgable about her personality, I just think she's really, really pretty. I'm sorry if being attracted to a 31 year-old is uncomfortable to you m bison.

ILX really, really hates women.

Mark C, Monday, 19 September 2011 13:28 (2 years ago) Permalink

She's just very cutesy and child-like in a lot of ways which is maybe what M Bison is objecting to? Feel like she was exactly what the author had in mind when writing this: http://julieklausner.tumblr.com/post/6331886267/dont-fear-the-dowager-a-valentine-to-maturity-an

NB I love a lot of cute things and am unapologetically guilty of at least a couple things in the article and take issue with some of the points therein. That said, I think it makes a couple good ones and is perhaps relevant here.

ᒓᴥᒔ (ENBB), Monday, 19 September 2011 13:31 (2 years ago) Permalink

See I guess I've always thought of her as more cringe-inducingly "quirky" than cringe-inducingly "child-like".

ᒓᴥᒔ (ENBB), Monday, 19 September 2011 13:33 (2 years ago) Permalink

Sadly I know more than one irl female over the age of 28 that would probably say something similar.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 19 September 2011 13:34 (2 years ago) Permalink

1) she is very attractive
2) she was pretty ace in Almost Famous. Perhaps the best thing about it besides F. McDormand.
3) literally everything else i've seen her in (which is admittedly not much) has been aggressively mediocre to outright terrible

7 Crazy Chinese Mothers (will), Monday, 19 September 2011 13:35 (2 years ago) Permalink

I would like to reiterate:

Briefly, she mulls over what to do with the painting of a pair of moccasins on the wall. It came with the trailer and is so hideous and comically southwestern that at first I thought Deschanel had put it there as a joke. Irony isn’t her style, though. “I’m worried if I pull these weird things down, they’re going to be mad at me,” she says. “So I’m trying to figure out something I can put oooooover this.” She demonstrates by holding up a picture of smiling lambs she happens to have lying around.

100% hilarious

sick yr finger up his butt (DJP), Monday, 19 September 2011 13:35 (2 years ago) Permalink

I really have no opinion on her at all. I think AF and ELF are the only things I've ever seen her in and she was OK, I guess. Never listened to her band. She's very pretty in a very non-threatening way which is fine. I just immediately thought of that article when reading through this thread.

ᒓᴥᒔ (ENBB), Monday, 19 September 2011 13:36 (2 years ago) Permalink

Yeah the lamb picture thing killed me when I read it.

btw enbb you are v pretty in a v threatening way

fyi on her new show her character comes across less like an infant and more like a nerd who is unaware that she is pretty

sick yr finger up his butt (DJP), Monday, 19 September 2011 13:38 (2 years ago) Permalink

I saw her in "Hitchhiker's Guide", or rather I saw about 24 minutes of it and she was in it somewhere. I don't remember ever seeing her in anything else. Non-threatening pretty?

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Monday, 19 September 2011 13:38 (2 years ago) Permalink

run jaymc & jam-master jaymc (some dude), Monday, 19 September 2011 13:41 (2 years ago) Permalink

hmm, that article sits uneasily with me, particularly the idea that women do it in part to attract men (??) and that women who are into cute/twee stuff aren't educated or bright.

i forget what thread it was where someone questioned whether girls could be hipsters -- feel like zooey/the type talked about in ENBB's article is essentially hipster

toy and candy planet (reddening), Monday, 19 September 2011 13:44 (2 years ago) Permalink

what is the grown-ass dude version of this syndrome? sitting around talking about thundercats? nostalgia for the days of osh-kosh corduroy overalls? i feel like there's gotta be an analog.
