There is so much more music then what is on the radio.

Yup.

DMB fans aren't like Jehova's Witnesses

I like the idea of fans of any band riding around on bikes like the Mormons, winning people over via house to house visits.

To be fair, Sarah, you're quite correct in general. You like them and that's what matters, and you shouldn't care what anyone else thinks. But like it or not, other people will have their opinions on the matter and will disagree with you on them if that's what they feel. That's the way things work. From where you're standing, those others are not 'right,' but they're not wrong either.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

But Sarah, I've heard the first two albums. I really wanted to like them. I never did, outside of a few of the radio songs that you feel are their lesser work. It's not like I didn't try to get into them!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

i happen to love the dmb and will travel almost anywhere in the united states to see them. that is a lot of traveling as our country is much much larger than yours (unless you are in china, russia, or india) and they play in front of a full house every night so who cares what you europeans think. if you were to give them a try with an open mind then you might just like them. do not just dislike them because it is the cool thing to do on this board. and not everybody agrees with dave on everything he does because we should LIBERATE IRAQ

craig johnson, Friday, 28 February 2003 21:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

USA! USA! Go for the gold Craig!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Craig, I am embarrassed to come from the same state as you.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

does Craig realise that almost all the DMB hate is coming from his fellow countrymen, as most Europeons don't know and could give a fuck who Dave Matthews is?

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

and not everybody agrees with dave on everything he does because we should LIBERATE IRAQ

Then get off your ass and get over there and do it, cowboy.

This thread is at last finding its level!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't mind DMB, but I hate the audience at their shows, which is comprised of sorority girls and drunk frat guys hitting on sorority girls.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 1 March 2003 04:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

How about we listen to somebody with some credibility on this issue. Would you all agree that U2 is a fairly decent band? Would you believe Bono is fairly talented?? Well this have bono speak about this issue

"The first time I heard him(Dave) I thought he was a black jazz artist. The song I heard (crush) from him and his bandmates was
amazing and had a distinct soulful feel to it, the feel that you don't hear much at all today from bands. Their drummer(carter) has God like drumming skills, amazing live band their just lit from beginning to end.I just got around to picking up their new one Busted Stuff, fucking mindblowing music.
All the musicans bring somthing to the table so your always full ya know? They literally have created their own genre of music and that right there is quite a thrill mate."- Bono ,Showbiz Iraland Maginzine 3-2-03

Is this why we hate dmb?? yah dmb..they suck..riiiiiiiight

Mark, Saturday, 1 March 2003 06:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

What the hell does Bono have to do with this? And who cares if he likes DMB or not?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 March 2003 06:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Showbiz Iraland Maginzine is a great read

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 1 March 2003 09:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Unfortunately I think you just shot yourself in the foot.

has anyone noticed that a lot of these posts have been incredibly racist....

P.S(especially the non-dmb fans you white trash pieces of shit)

P.S.S(have you guys ever realize that your just dissing people you will never be i.e Accountants, lawyers, people that go to university)

another 'interesting' post. what a quietly storming afternoon we are having today.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 1 March 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh let me guess..u2 is a terrible band also and bono sucks. i would say its safe to say that u2 is one of the most established and celebrated rock bands in rock history..count the number of awards..count the number of years they have been together..etc..etc..etc...dont argue for the sake of argument you all are just digging yourselves into a deeper ditch..please be reminded i have not said one bad thing about linkin park.

mark, Saturday, 1 March 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

who cares what bono thinks..obviously not you..it just brought some credibility to this topic..do you know what credibility is??? its something you try to use when you argue with people ..get it??

mark, Saturday, 1 March 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't think you get it. never mind.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 1 March 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

dmb will only be defended by dmb fans, not casual listeners...
by bringing U2 into the topic, the depths are now being plumbed...
BTW-yeah, u2 is now among the shit bands. i don't need another Paul Simon or Billy Joel, fuck you very much.
racist?? why? because someone said "black"??? is that racist?
if so, geez, take yr pills...

eded, Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Julio - why d'you keep clicking on this link, it's obv. you don't like DMB, and you almost know what the unread posts are going to say, yet still you come in, pop a more-than-a-little-smug dismissal at The Googler, then scurry off. C'mon d00d. Bring the love. Imbibe the vibe ((c) Ronan, 2001).

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lazy HTML as signifier of disdain withstanding, that wasn't meant to be/sound nasty.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

But like it or not, other people will have their opinions on the matter and will disagree with you on them if that's what they feel. That's the way things work. From where you're standing, those others are not 'right,' but they're not wrong either. -- Ned Raggett

Ned, like I said I don't care if people like the music or not. That's their opinion. It's when people are prejudiced towards me and other fans that there begins to be a problem. I happen to hate the music of the band Creed, but I don't hate all Creed fans just because they like music that I don't. I have been treated very unfairly at times because I happen to be a DMB fan. A lot of people assume I am a pot-head and that all I do is get drunk and listen to DMB. That's not my life at all. I don't really know of many other bands or artists whose fans get so much hatred. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that DMB fans are some of the most hated fans around and I still don't understand why. Maybe someone could enlighten me?

sarah4136, Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

''Julio - why d'you keep clicking on this link, it's obv. you don't like DMB, and you almost know what the unread posts are going to say, yet still you come in, pop a more-than-a-little-smug dismissal at The Googler, then scurry off.''

It's not that I don't like them, its just that I haven't heard a single note from them.

some of the comments are idiotic (if bono likes 'em that must mean something...).

But you know I do the 'smug' thing most of the time anyway cozen, and especially so at the weekends since this place is nearly dead.

You are right. I'll restrain myself.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 1 March 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

If Bono likes 'em, it must mean something. Not necessarily an interesting something, tho'. And yeh, I haven't heard a single note from them, either. That's weird, right? They're massive in America - surely there is some bleeding into Britain?

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 1 March 2003 19:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

But Sarah, I've heard the first two albums. I really wanted to like them. I never did, outside of a few of the radio songs that you feel are their lesser work. It's not like I didn't try to get into them! --Dan

OK. So you don't like them. I'm sure I don't like some of the same music as you. But that doesn't mean we can't get along, and that is my main point.

sarah4136, Saturday, 1 March 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I never said it didn't mean we can't get along! The meanest things I've said on this thread have been direct responses to idiots (direct responses to individuals) and saying that the violinist looks like The Predator (which he does, really).

I don't really know of many other bands or artists whose fans get so much hatred.

Pretty much EVERY band's fans has negative stereotypes. I've spent most of my life deply into Prince (ergo I MUST be a bisexual, hyper-promiscuous fop obsesed with Jesus) and The Cure (ergo I must think I'm a suicidal vampire fairy). Ask fans of The Smiths what people thought of them, or the Sex Pistols, or Marilyn Manson, or pretty much any band or artist out there.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 1 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lord knows I love hearing it, but I'm still confused why that guy looks like the Predator. Maybe somebody could put pictures up for us to compare.

I got enough crap for liking REM in elementary school, I can't even IMAGINE what I would have gotten for Prince-appreciation (save for the Batman soundtrack, which was cool because it was about Batman). Maybe that's why I didn't really go nuts about pop until college (even though I watched it all the time on tv I only purchased "alternative" albums).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 1 March 2003 20:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ahhh, it's the hair that does it. Thank you (I was thinking more about that mouth and don't see much comparison there). Maybe Danny Glover raped the Predator at the end of Predator 2. Hee hee snort!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 1 March 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

''If Bono likes 'em, it must mean something. Not necessarily an interesting something, tho'.''

I was being sarcastic as it isn't interesting.

band x likes band y.

that band x is U2 is nothing to me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 1 March 2003 20:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh vienna!

(hi ned)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 1 March 2003 20:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, I know, julio.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 1 March 2003 21:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well done, Anthony. ;-)

please be reminded i have not said one bad thing about linkin park.

Uh, yay? (To make it clearer, Mark -- I don't care how many awards they've won or how long they've been together or all that crap, what matters about U2 or any other band is what I think of their music. That should be all that matters to you as well. Or do you seriously go around rating bands based on those extraneous factors rather than their music?)

Ned, like I said I don't care if people like the music or not. That's their opinion. It's when people are prejudiced towards me and other fans that there begins to be a problem.

Fair enough, and as Dan has illustrated, that's something that is pretty commonly felt no matter what you're listening to. I will say though that you were 'irritated' when people judged Mr. Matthews and company on the basis of what they had heard via the radio songs -- so clearly you do care somewhat! ;-) I'm not saying that's a bad thing at all, we could all say something similar. And as Dan notes, his response (and mine) aren't to say, "We can't get along because you like DMB," it's to say, "We're not going to agree on this subject -- that means nothing else about anything else, though, or doesn't have to be." Which it sounds like we're all saying anyway.

ergo I must think I'm a suicidal vampire fairy

You don't, Dan? But but but I do! Oh wait...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 March 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

if you know the Cure at all, all liking them means is that you're pretty fucking sappy at times.

being a fan, I'm allowed to say that.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 1 March 2003 21:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

''Yeah, I know, julio.''

oh, sorry

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 1 March 2003 21:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

pretty fucking sappy

Seen as a verb phrase instead of a adjectival one, this suggests wonders.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 March 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

bucking for Dan's job, Ned?

ooh! another accidental double entendre!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 1 March 2003 21:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

who cares what bono thinks..obviously not you..it just brought some credibility to this topic..do you know what credibility is??? its something you try to use when you argue with people ..get it??

Listen junior, not only have I invariably seen U2 more times than you've had hot dinners, I've actually sat down and talked to the man, so don't try to school me about his cred. I don't care if JAZ COLEMAN espouses the music of the Dave Mathews Band. Lending creedence to an artist just because someone you respect or admire likes them is no way to establish merit. Hell, I'm a massive fan of Julian Cope, but the records he cites on his website as 'crucial' I usually find nigh on unlistenable. What I can tell you is that to these ears, the music of the DMB is dead fucking boring and deplorably overrated by a nation of whistleheaded frat schmucks who don't know any better. I couldn't give less of a flaming fuckin' fig if Bono likes them -- he likes fuckin' Patti Smith too, and ya don't see me charging out my door to go buy her fuckin' crappy albums.
