is the new girl supposed to be like a 'we will make a show about a liz lemon type who everyone wants to fuck' show?

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 12 September 2011 18:07 (2 years ago) Permalink

Briefly, she mulls over what to do with the painting of a pair of moccasins on the wall. It came with the trailer and is so hideous and comically southwestern that at first I thought Deschanel had put it there as a joke. Irony isn’t her style, though. “I’m worried if I pull these weird things down, they’re going to be mad at me,” she says. “So I’m trying to figure out something I can put oooooover this.” She demonstrates by holding up a picture of smiling lambs she happens to have lying around.

She has a band, of course, a folk-rock duo with M. Ward. As half of She & Him, she sings Shirelles harmonies, plays piano and ukulele, and writes most of the songs—well enough that, as Pitchfork.com wrote in a stunned, positive review, she’s somehow avoided “a Hollywood archetype: the actor-turned-singer-turned-punchline.”

what, y'all don't carry paintings of the fluffiest of farm animals around with you on your various business trips, just in case the hotel art is too oogy to bear?

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 12 September 2011 18:18 (2 years ago) Permalink

tbh I do have some not-as-grudging-as-it-should-be respect for ppl determined to live their lives as if they were ridiculous sitcom characters

“Kitsch causes two tears to flow in quick succession. The first tear says: How nice to see children running on the grass! The second tear says: How nice to be moved, together with all mankind, by children running on the grass! It is the second tear that makes kitsch kitsch."

that's a pretty specific reaction to define kitsch

just saying, I don't see children running on grass when I look at plastic flamingos

I'm not going to argue about kitsch overall, but I think Kuindera's essential point is that kitsch derives from an inability or desire to deal with reality in a healthy way. I worry that Zooey may be tempted by kitsch.

em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Monday, 12 September 2011 18:28 (2 years ago) Permalink

idk if kitsch pertains to irl experiences tbqh, but it's one of those words like hipster that people use to suit themselves

the etsy-shopping kitten-loving bow-wearing set doesn't watch sitcoms, and if they do it's mockumentary shows, nothing like this zooey show

oh come on, I am about 100% certain there is strong overlap between the etsy demographic and the Mike and Molly demographic

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Monday, 12 September 2011 18:32 (2 years ago) Permalink

is this meant to be a full 23-week thing? seems like a weird career move if so.

buzza, Monday, 12 September 2011 18:33 (2 years ago) Permalink

possibly, i just barely know what 'etsy' is beyond a pejorative cultural signifier on ilx, so i'm probably underestimating how MOR that demographic is (xpost)

etsy is basically a web-based arts-and-crafts-centric version of QVC

ZD's movie career isn't exactly setting the world on fire (it says it all that The Happening is her 2nd biggest hit of the last few years), so her sister's TV paychecks probably started looking pretty good to her

ibiza bloodfarty rock anthem (some dude), Monday, 12 September 2011 18:37 (2 years ago) Permalink

i'm very confused by what the demographic for bones is:

Philip Nunez, Monday, 12 September 2011 18:38 (2 years ago) Permalink

Procedural Full Of Attractive People is probably the broadest demo in television

ibiza bloodfarty rock anthem (some dude), Monday, 12 September 2011 18:39 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah. guess it's just possible that she's a very limited performer and there's only a limited number of 'zooey d' roles in the movies. 'she's no rachel mcadams' - an hollywood insider.

all the small zings (history mayne), Monday, 12 September 2011 18:40 (2 years ago) Permalink

i'm more confused why they took all the cushions off the furniture and sat on them on the floor. the chairs and couches are like right there behind them! what the hell!

ibiza bloodfarty rock anthem (some dude), Monday, 12 September 2011 18:40 (2 years ago) Permalink

Hell, y'all can hate all you want, but if (?) I had to die and I had to be looking at one thing when I died, it would be Zooey's face.

it was weird to look at ZD's filmography and realize early in her career she did 2 back to back movies called "the new guy" and "the good girl"

ibiza bloodfarty rock anthem (some dude), Monday, 12 September 2011 18:47 (2 years ago) Permalink

That’s why it’s almost a shock when she shows up at the party in a dress that seems so much more generically actress-y than her usual sixties vintage fare.

the english language is really taking a beating these days

is there much crossover between zooey fans and barry lyndon and people wondering what happened to the kid from freaks and geeks, though?

Philip Nunez, Monday, 12 September 2011 18:53 (2 years ago) Permalink

Just to be clear, I was (mostly) quoting about want to be looking at Zooey's face when I died. I'd much rather it was...Katy Perry?

Zonules of Zinn (dowd), Monday, 12 September 2011 18:54 (2 years ago) Permalink

if i had the chance to look at katy perry in the fraction of a fraction of a millisecond between life and death i still don't think my eyes would be aiming for her face.

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 12 September 2011 18:55 (2 years ago) Permalink

how would you be certain it was zooey's face and not the more structurally sturdy one of her sister's flanked by the dude from angel?

Philip Nunez, Monday, 12 September 2011 18:56 (2 years ago) Permalink

her sister is awesome

mh, Monday, 12 September 2011 19:04 (2 years ago) Permalink
