Michelle Williams vs Carey Mulligan

i have never seen a carey mulligan movie but has she been in something as horrible as Deception? (michelle looked vv pretty tho)

CM was cute in 'An Education' (and Pike wasn't dull!) but she's no Michelle Williams.

Man, I know it's middlebrow and all, but I found An Education pretty gripping.

I don't mind middlebrow -- I mind middlemuddled.

Sillier than a movie that posits Skarsgaaaaaaaard (with that accent!) and Mulligan as a couple? Sillier than those scenes with her bickering parents?

I'd mind less if I didn't read a positive review which didn't praise the movie in the same terms over and over ("The debut of the next Audrey Hepburn"! "Quirky!" "British!" "It has Oscar written all over it!"). I'm sure I didn't read them all.

Cracks > An Education, as far as movies about the debasement of upper class British dolls goes.

Granted, Molina is kind of a cartoon.

there's probably some crossover there but it feels different to me since CM hasn't taken any unpleasant stabs at being a singer or comic actress yet

I feel like they provoke the same kind of "you guys" eye-rolling from women.

Deschanel's an okay actress who comes off worse because most of her roles are written as male-indie fantasies by and for men.

Which must be why I don't hate her...

to whatever extent i've even heard of anyone discuss CM it seems like she's well liked by women, although she seems like one of those """"famous"""" types who gets an Oscar nod and a bunch of roles in movies that weren't necessarily big hits before people in America really have any idea who she is and is still in the middle of that process

I don't usually loathe celebrities until they do something egregious or have annoying voices or something. CM is at the very distant periphery of my consciousness (until someone mentioned 'An Ed' I wouldn't have put her together with the person mentioned wrt laBeouf) and that's all I know her from; a cute film that I barely remember. She's cute. We'll see if that turns into anything.

CM in her movies isn't an ingenue exactly (she's a gamine, if that's a noun), have no idea what her 'star brand' is, but it's not like zoey's whatever it is. zo-zo's is pretty toxic at this point.

I haven't followed Zooey enough to see the toxicity. I'm awfully sensitive but I'm kinda lazy.

Can't remember being impressed by Michelle Williams in anything, Carey Mulligan is always pretty good but has pretty much only been in dire movies.

I love her though

really wish there was a clip of michelle williams singing 'i honestly love you' into nixon's tape recorder but ours is a cruel and injust world. carey mulligan seems cute enough, has yet to appear in any movie i have the slightest interest in seeing.

carey, even though I've only seen her on Doctor Who and the Bleak House miniseries. She was way more memorable in both those shows and the ten minutes of An Education that I caught than all of Michelle Williams roles put together (scrolling through her imdb page, I've seen BM, Synecdoche, Deception, and I'm Not There and pretty much forgot she was in all of them).

Williams has a depth of character and gravitas she can bring to the table that Carey doesn't yet, from what I've seen of her. Surprised at the dislike of CM. Williams is the clear winner for me.
