Stone cold

Taylor Swift has the same little eyes/big mouth but not the hair.

Michelle wins vs anyone. No problem with Carey but she needs to get some good movies / roles. Oh that 'Drive' looks good.

people who LOATHE carey are pretty fuckin weird. she has poor taste in guys i guess [off colour 'hope mumford guy kills himself, that way they'd be even more similar' joek] but enh.

voted carey bc she does better work in 'an education' and 'never let me go' than i've seen from MW. who i don't dislike, but i had to look at imdb to see what she's done. there's a few things i ought to watch but im not bowled over. and im somewhat more stoked for 'shame' than MW playing marilyn.

too twee. i'm not super into girls who look like small boys. i've only seen her in lame movies and she wasn't good in them. can see where the hate comes from. although personally cgaf.

you've got male (jim in glasgow), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:28 (1 year ago) Permalink

'an education' was great, but prob not pretty and boring enough for ppl who think douglas sirk films set the high water mark for cinema.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:29 (1 year ago) Permalink

On no, actually An Education was plenty boring enough.

like MW's dead babydaddy

It came as one helluva shock to me, let me tell you

em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:36 (1 year ago) Permalink

An Education is so boring it could only have been directed by a man.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:37 (1 year ago) Permalink

Boring enough for a man, made for a woman.

Gus Van Sant's Gerry Blank (Eric H.), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:38 (1 year ago) Permalink

i have never seen a carey mulligan movie but has she been in something as horrible as Deception? (michelle looked vv pretty tho)

buzza, Friday, 9 September 2011 20:38 (1 year ago) Permalink

CM was cute in 'An Education' (and Pike wasn't dull!) but she's no Michelle Williams.

em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:38 (1 year ago) Permalink

Man, I know it's middlebrow and all, but I found An Education pretty gripping.

*ter jacket (jaymc), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:40 (1 year ago) Permalink

I don't mind middlebrow -- I mind middlemuddled.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:42 (1 year ago) Permalink

you guys are silly

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:45 (1 year ago) Permalink

Sillier than a movie that posits Skarsgaaaaaaaard (with that accent!) and Mulligan as a couple? Sillier than those scenes with her bickering parents?

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:46 (1 year ago) Permalink

I'd mind less if I didn't read a positive review which didn't praise the movie in the same terms over and over ("The debut of the next Audrey Hepburn"! "Quirky!" "British!" "It has Oscar written all over it!"). I'm sure I didn't read them all.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:48 (1 year ago) Permalink

Cracks > An Education, as far as movies about the debasement of upper class British dolls goes.

You don't buy that Jenny would fall for a sophisticated handsome older guy or that he's enough of a cad to take advantage of her?

Granted, Molina is kind of a cartoon.

there's probably some crossover there but it feels different to me since CM hasn't taken any unpleasant stabs at being a singer or comic actress yet

some dude, Friday, 9 September 2011 20:54 (1 year ago) Permalink

I feel like they provoke the same kind of "you guys" eye-rolling from women.

*ter jacket (jaymc), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:59 (1 year ago) Permalink

Deschanel's an okay actress who comes off worse because most of her roles are written as male-indie fantasies by and for men.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:00 (1 year ago) Permalink

Which must be why I don't hate her...

em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:05 (1 year ago) Permalink

to whatever extent i've even heard of anyone discuss CM it seems like she's well liked by women, although she seems like one of those """"famous"""" types who gets an Oscar nod and a bunch of roles in movies that weren't necessarily big hits before people in America really have any idea who she is and is still in the middle of that process

some dude, Friday, 9 September 2011 21:07 (1 year ago) Permalink

Zooey at least seems like she has some personality (for better or worse), instead of being a vacant pursed mouth porcelain doll

some dude, Friday, 9 September 2011 21:14 (1 year ago) Permalink

I don't usually loathe celebrities until they do something egregious or have annoying voices or something. CM is at the very distant periphery of my consciousness (until someone mentioned 'An Ed' I wouldn't have put her together with the person mentioned wrt laBeouf) and that's all I know her from; a cute film that I barely remember. She's cute. We'll see if that turns into anything.

CM in her movies isn't an ingenue exactly (she's a gamine, if that's a noun), have no idea what her 'star brand' is, but it's not like zoey's whatever it is. zo-zo's is pretty toxic at this point.

h8 sensitive dudes tho

a hurrrr hurrrr (history mayne), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:27 (1 year ago) Permalink

Gamine is a noun not an adjective.

em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:29 (1 year ago) Permalink

I haven't followed Zooey enough to see the toxicity. I'm awfully sensitive but I'm kinda lazy.

em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:30 (1 year ago) Permalink

gamine can be an adjective

anyway, CM's brand probably more towards zoey's 'your highness'* co-star nathalie portman: small, short-haired fine-featured ladies who do the acting

*a truly toxic film

a hurrrr hurrrr (history mayne), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:32 (1 year ago) Permalink

Can't remember being impressed by Michelle Williams in anything, Carey Mulligan is always pretty good but has pretty much only been in dire movies.

i liked carey mulligan when i first saw her in the Bleak House miniseries, in fact i am annoyed to realize that she doesn't somehow permanently exist in victorian london.

i watched 'take this waltz', it was really shitty, tho not really michelles fault

jennifer lawrence has stolen the squinty blonde throne imo

--niccimanewhore (some dude), Sunday, 27 May 2012 04:07 (1 year ago) Permalink

Shame = first time I sort of didn't mind Carey. I would say it must've helped her to be surrounded by such a completely horrible movie, but that didn't work when it was An Education, so she must have improved in the in between.

sarah polley is horrible, horrible, horrible. that michelle williams on baywatch thing is adorable. i hope that's still in her demo reel, not that she probably has such a thing.

she was great in SHAME but i hated the film. just for once i'd like to see a *positive*, upbeat movie about some urban geezer
who can't connect to people and bangs everything in sight.

This was an extremely drab and boring movie, BTW.

She was good in Doctor Who.
