As long as you're not napping in it, it's all good.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 06:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Good night, fair ITR denizens. I need to get some sleep before tomorrow; I still have a bunch of wrapping to do and I have to get ready.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 16:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, just the usual holiday cheer, Ned.

Wait, did someone just call me a "voice of reason?" Whoa.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 17:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Dear ITR,

I wish you all a very merry Christmas!!! And may you all get to sleep in as late as you want to tomorrow. And there should be chocolate involved somewhere in here, too.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 25 December 2008 05:50 (fifteen years ago) link

I will be in HSTNGS tomorrow afternoon at my parent's house. There will definitely be chocolate, and also a big turkey dinner. And the kids' cousins will play with them, so I can pass out in front of the fire place.

Happy christmas all.

^^^ what he said

Sara R-C, Thursday, 25 December 2008 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

suzy, I am looking forward to a similar type of afternoon. My Dad literally went on about how "black people" are "always ripping him off" at Christmas dinner a few years ago. Very festive!

Sara R-C, Thursday, 25 December 2008 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

(is it bad that when relatives act like that, I comfort myself with the thought that they will be dead someday? It doesn't seem very Christmas-y of me.)

He can be really great, but sometimes I just want to shake him until his head falls off.

Just be glad you weren't there. I was sitting with my One Cool Cousin at the table and it was verrrrrry uncomfortable.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 25 December 2008 18:42 (fifteen years ago) link

But if you don't all have a Very Merry Christmas, I will be very angry, so let's stop talking about insane parents and just be happy because we are young and it is Christmas!!!!!

Xmas in Carmel = great as always. Whole family rolling in good gifts. In my case, this includes Criterion double-disc editions of M, The Third Man and Kurosawa's High and Low, the Jesus and Mary Chain rarities box set, Neil Stephenson's Anathem and a book on cocktails plus liquor. And bookplates and more.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 December 2008 20:59 (fifteen years ago) link

So in essence yay me. And yay you all and if you have to escape evil relatives please to do so with vim and vigor. Merry Xmas I sez I sez.

my xmas:

xmas eve pub dinner and stomp across the dunes and marshes home
xmas morning bacon and eggs
knit
pub whilst the turkey is on
late xmas lunch complements on my xmas pudding
presents, I am up in shirts with insects on them
watch 'a christmas story' round the fire
eat and get compliments on christmas cake
a rather good christmas all in all

Ed, Thursday, 25 December 2008 22:46 (fifteen years ago) link

lovely christmas everyone<3

estela, Thursday, 25 December 2008 22:51 (fifteen years ago) link

omg Indian food sounds soooo awesome, you guys.

Everyone had a good day then! (pending reports otherwise)

My day was shockingly fantastic; I think my family has been visited by Jacob Marley's ghost or something. Everyone was jovial, my Dad said disturbingly nice things about Barack Obama (ending in, "but I still don't trust him...," of course), no one said anything insanely inappropriate, and I they gave us lots of presents and a shocking amount of Christmas money.

Also, I drank two glasses of champagne on a pretty much empty stomach before lunch and told inappropriate nursing-related stories to my Dad's brother, which he seemed to enjoy.

Next up: put kids in bed and eat more!

Sara R-C, Friday, 26 December 2008 02:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Good to know, Sara -- my mom was not as vile today, but then HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE...

Meat ROFL (suzy), Friday, 26 December 2008 02:38 (fifteen years ago) link

you guys are better than me: i stopped making any kind of effort to go to family xmases 10 years ago! i don't miss them and i'm certain they don't miss me.

just1n3, Friday, 26 December 2008 04:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I have kids, so getting out of it is pretty well impossible. Besides, presents for kids plus free booze and good food isn't tooooo much of a problem. It's just when the commentary gets out of hand and pisses me off that I hate it.

suzy - hey, your Mom must have been feeling the Christmas spirit some then! (maybe?!)

Sara R-C, Friday, 26 December 2008 04:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i can't imagine having a conservative family. i'm pretty damn liberal, and talking to my mom and dad, i still sometimes feel like alex p. keaton.

Sara R-C, Friday, 26 December 2008 05:59 (fifteen years ago) link

i agree and will admit that i'm totally lucky. i can't imagine the brain-searing rage i would feel if my parents thought that me being liberal, or vegan, or riding my bike instead of driving when possible was just some phase i would grow out of when i grew up. i have become more conservative as i've aged (meaning that i don't still think that all authority is necessarily evil or that any form of government is wrong on principle), but the weird thing is that i think my dad is more liberal now than he was 10 years ago. and my mom is a political space cadet, always has been.

#NAME? (ytth), Friday, 26 December 2008 06:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, you kind of get over the brain-searing rage after a while, but it never ceases to be annoying/appalling. But whatever, they'd be bored if I wasn't around for sure. ;)
