Scrolled down on phone. Saw the first Lonnie Liston Smith one, clicked that option. Scrolled down further, saw Sun Ra, clicked that one instead. Scrolled down further, read thread, agreed that it's more of a helmet than a hat, changed vote back to Lonnie Liston Smith's first one.

Sun Ra rocked many a fine hat, but I always liked his chain mail wig things the best

OK, I just gotta post this here. From "Space is the Place" (the bio), here's Sun Ra's interview with the extremely condescending TV talk-show host Alan Burke:

Ra: My message is that the reason that America is in turmoil today is that there's a nation missing among the nations, a nation from an ancient world. And because that nation is missing, we have a void among the nations.
Burke: What nation is that?
Ra: The nation of the ancient Egyptians. The Egypt that is there now is not the real Egypt, and these people have been deplaced, and some of the people down among the so-called Negroes are ancient Egyptians, and the American people are mean to these people, and they're going to have to turn them loose in order to have peace upon this planet.
Burke: What is that, that you're playing with?
Ra: Well, this is just a hat.
Burke: It's a what?
Ra: It's a hat.
Burke: A hat? Would you put it on for us?
Ra: I use it sometime when I'm playing in my band, playing space music.
Burke: Space music?
Ra: Yeah.
Burke: Do you have a message for us?
Ra: Yes, the message is that you should study, and at least you should try an understand about the ancient Egyptians. We hear that the Negroes are in need of help, and they aren't getting any, and the Negroes are getting riled up and everybody is saying that they're poor, and that they don't have anything, but the ancient Egyptians are never mentioned in the press or anywhere else. They've come to America from the Middle East.
Burke: Do those ancient Egyptians of which you speak have a spokesman other than yourself?
Ra: Well, who should be a better spokesman for the ancient Egyptians than I?
Burke: Well, I...just don't know, Ra.
Ra: That's the way it's written, and as it is written, so it is.
Burke: Well, I'll just have to take your word for it. I, uh, thank you for coming up and good luck in your pyramid.

I don't know who the people in the last two pics are, but those look more like LARP hats than spiritual hats.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 07:00 (twelve years ago) link

I imagine a world where we all wear spiritual hats and tuomas never feels compelled to tell me that he doesn't know who those people are

let me save you some time - yes, you are probably anti-semantic (jjjusten), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 07:05 (twelve years ago) link

Confusingly, a balaclava is listed as a type of hat (if you define it as "any type of headgear") here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hat

Wouldn't that mean that wigs are hats too?

I saw a lot of spiritual hats last night at the ~world premiere~ of the Chicago Underground Duo with Pharaoh Sanders, but none of them were on PS's head. He wore no hat!

perhaps he wore a hat so spiritual it exists only on another plane!

There was also a very tall man who appeared on stage 3x to do some deep-voiced ululation (?) and provide inspirational words, but he was not introduced. He just walked out, said his stuff, disappeared, repeated at the middle and end of the set, and then disappeared back behind the curtains. He had to be at least 7 feet tall. Pretty much all I could see of PS was his glowing white hair and goatee.

[Pharoah Sanders'] "Thembi" obstinately refuses to move us, a bland and strangely mechanical run-through of the familiar/ethnic/free cliches of the period, with an over-emphasis on small instruments and not enough on straight playing. [b]This was more about wearing funny hats than making music.[b] - The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings, Ninth Edition (Richard Cook & Brian Morton)
