i'm keeping my personal hats out of this spiritual poll, but i voted early and i voted for thembi hat

there is going to be a lot of ilxors going 'wtf' at all the mentions of 'spiritual hats' on ilx.

you dont have any spiritual jazz hats?
You have mainly secular jazz hats?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 3 September 2011 00:04 (twelve years ago) link

dude we can see the thread title, it's sitting right there

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Saturday, 3 September 2011 00:04 (twelve years ago) link

I want to vote for Thembi but i feel i'm voting for the full ensemble rather than the hat alone. Sun Ra one is not a hat imo.

Number None, Saturday, 3 September 2011 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

If we descend to the level of arguing whether a given headpiece is a hat or not then we all deserve to die.

ice cr?m, Saturday, 3 September 2011 00:09 (twelve years ago) link

most of my hats are spiritual but not religious
also i like to wear scarves on my head and general headdresses

is a headdress a hat?

If you don't think it's a hat, don't vote for it. But the consensus on the poll thread was in favour of considering Sun Ra behatted.

dubplates and monster munch (seandalai), Saturday, 3 September 2011 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

i voted for sun ra, if that shit transcends hatness then that just makes it even more spiritual

ice cr?m, Saturday, 3 September 2011 00:16 (twelve years ago) link

think abt it

ice cr?m, Saturday, 3 September 2011 00:16 (twelve years ago) link

Feel like Lonnie Liston Smith's contribution to the genre is being underrated here.

dubplates and monster munch (seandalai), Saturday, 3 September 2011 00:25 (twelve years ago) link

it matches his hand-knit sweater
that is extremely spiritual

I Swear i have seen this video of Thelonious Monk where after a solo he very pointedly takes of his hat, puts it down on the piano bench a does a little dance around it.
youtube is not finding it though..

voted for the 1st lonnie liston one there. hella funky but not outlandish enough to get you immediately committed if worn in public.

I voted for the 1st Lonnie hat too, looks awesome but practical, plus I have fond memories of hippie girls in the 90s wearing hats like that.

Scrolled down on phone. Saw the first Lonnie Liston Smith one, clicked that option. Scrolled down further, saw Sun Ra, clicked that one instead. Scrolled down further, read thread, agreed that it's more of a helmet than a hat, changed vote back to Lonnie Liston Smith's first one.

OK, I just gotta post this here. From "Space is the Place" (the bio), here's Sun Ra's interview with the extremely condescending TV talk-show host Alan Burke:

Ra: My message is that the reason that America is in turmoil today is that there's a nation missing among the nations, a nation from an ancient world. And because that nation is missing, we have a void among the nations.
Burke: What nation is that?
Ra: The nation of the ancient Egyptians. The Egypt that is there now is not the real Egypt, and these people have been deplaced, and some of the people down among the so-called Negroes are ancient Egyptians, and the American people are mean to these people, and they're going to have to turn them loose in order to have peace upon this planet.
Burke: What is that, that you're playing with?
Ra: Well, this is just a hat.
Burke: It's a what?
Ra: It's a hat.
Burke: A hat? Would you put it on for us?
Ra: I use it sometime when I'm playing in my band, playing space music.
Burke: Space music?
Ra: Yeah.
Burke: Do you have a message for us?
Ra: Yes, the message is that you should study, and at least you should try an understand about the ancient Egyptians. We hear that the Negroes are in need of help, and they aren't getting any, and the Negroes are getting riled up and everybody is saying that they're poor, and that they don't have anything, but the ancient Egyptians are never mentioned in the press or anywhere else. They've come to America from the Middle East.
Burke: Do those ancient Egyptians of which you speak have a spokesman other than yourself?
Ra: Well, who should be a better spokesman for the ancient Egyptians than I?
Burke: Well, I...just don't know, Ra.
Ra: That's the way it's written, and as it is written, so it is.
Burke: Well, I'll just have to take your word for it. I, uh, thank you for coming up and good luck in your pyramid.

I saw a lot of spiritual hats last night at the ~world premiere~ of the Chicago Underground Duo with Pharaoh Sanders, but none of them were on PS's head. He wore no hat!

cross over the mushroom circle (La Lechera), Sunday, 19 October 2014 14:42 (nine years ago) link

perhaps he wore a hat so spiritual it exists only on another plane!

example (crüt), Sunday, 19 October 2014 14:46 (nine years ago) link

There was also a very tall man who appeared on stage 3x to do some deep-voiced ululation (?) and provide inspirational words, but he was not introduced. He just walked out, said his stuff, disappeared, repeated at the middle and end of the set, and then disappeared back behind the curtains. He had to be at least 7 feet tall. Pretty much all I could see of PS was his glowing white hair and goatee.

[Pharoah Sanders'] "Thembi" obstinately refuses to move us, a bland and strangely mechanical run-through of the familiar/ethnic/free cliches of the period, with an over-emphasis on small instruments and not enough on straight playing.
