You need a three strikes rule, maybe Big Sean praise is worthy of all 3 strikes though. I wish I had an irl rap friend.

spanish guitar on "long gone"!
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 09:38 (1 year ago) Permalink
Is this good then? I was kinda braced for it being terrible given that a man with Terius's quality control was willing to give it away free.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 09:44 (1 year ago) Permalink
i'm only a few tracks in, nothing blew me away until "long gone"
"ghetto", which comes after it, is TERRIBLE. who is this big sean person
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 09:46 (1 year ago) Permalink
seems a lot more consciously diaristic than anything he's ever done before
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 10:02 (1 year ago) Permalink
which means there's a lot more of a sense of ~the real terius~
that's not necessarily a good thing :/
sounds pretty though, mostly, in a low-key way not in a "here are my epic song suites" way

YOU USED TO BE ANTI INTERNET
BUT NOW YOU'RE CONSTANTLY BLOGGING AND SHIT

i'm only on #2 but the minimalism is nice; the melody's almost like some kinda soft rhodes part & much of the song just goes in loops

<3 wedding crasher. on some love/hate sh!t imo

on first listen i think this is pretty great
― mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:46 (1 year ago) Permalink
less about the sudden left-turns of the previous two records, more about setting up an environment in which terius can oscillate for 5 minutes at a time. swampy yet translucent r&b.
― mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:48 (1 year ago) Permalink
Getting heavy Drake and R. Kelly vibes from the first few tracks.
more about setting up an environment in which terius can oscillate for 5 minutes at a time is absolutely right. Holding back on an opinion for now.

Wedding Crasher aside this is sounding like the collection of shitty offcuts it probably is.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 17:44 (1 year ago) Permalink
^^ could barely get through the first 4 songs. 1977 is alright too.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 17:50 (1 year ago) Permalink
Grinning like an idiot as I listen to this. I recognize that this is probably rail material, but I'm too damn delighted to care.
Rolex music! Damn.

Casha has a nice voice for a ten-year-old boy.

i'd never heard the original "silly" but if yall aren't familiar with deniece williams you really must hear "free"
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:11 (1 year ago) Permalink
and indeed, here it is
i'm fond of the whole this is niecy album that it's from
The rawkout at the end of "This Shit Real N***a" is just NAGL for Terius.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:12 (1 year ago) Permalink
At least he hasn't put something like that on a real album. Yet.
― Number None, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:16 (1 year ago) Permalink
at least it wasn't the whole song
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:18 (1 year ago) Permalink
lol i was going to ask jokingly if "silly" was a deniece williams cover -- really don't wanna hear this shit now
― lil dawg (some dude), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:36 (1 year ago) Permalink
I posted that last message only halfway through and it got better almost immediately after that. And then radically worse. Only real keepers are Silly, 1977 and maybe Wedding Crasher. Otherwise it's really sub-par in terms of both songwriting and production - the one with Pharrell that explodes into rock guitars is fucking awful.
The rest is kinda like an hour's worth of Sex Intelligent except not really that good.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:40 (1 year ago) Permalink
I think it works best as a zone-out listen. If you put it on and don't ask anything from it, it's a nice little treat. But there's not a single track on here that matches anything from L/H, LvM or even Love King.
― Evan R, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:51 (1 year ago) Permalink
^officially scared to listen to this

i like "wake me when it's over" & "wedding crasher" as much as anything on LK outside of the suite

― D-40, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:55 (1 year ago) Permalink
what does "terius leak" mean?
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:56 (1 year ago) Permalink
I dunno, it meets a need for me. I feel the same way about the Trey Songz "Anticipation" tape; the songs don't really bowl me over, but it's got a good vibe to it, and whenever I need something pleasant (and a little unobtrusive) to listen to, it's there for me in my iTunes
― Evan R, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:57 (1 year ago) Permalink
xp is there solo terius music that i do not like? aside from a song here or there, not really, no
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:57 (1 year ago) Permalink
i think the album needs to be met on its own terms -- comparing it to his previous three albums doesn't seem right to me because i think it's designed to do different things
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 31 August 2011 20:01 (1 year ago) Permalink
kinda hate that line of crit-talk tbh, does it bang or does it not bang, that is the questeon

― D-40, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 20:03 (1 year ago) Permalink
is it better than either of his three albums? no. that said, i don't think it's that far off of love king, which i think is a solid level or two below his first two albums anyway. but i don't think my post is crit talk anyway, i think terius would agree w/ me. i don't see anything wrong w/ trying to understand the artist's intentions.
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 31 August 2011 20:04 (1 year ago) Permalink
still cant believe ppl find love king to be a step below love vs. money
