I love Doremi Fasol Latido and In Search Of Space, but that's all I've heard. Everyone seems to love Space Ritual, is it worth me checking out given that I generally don't like live albums much?

a ludicrous cover of The Stones' 'Gimme Shelter'! Thankfully, the latter isn't the same collaboration between the Hawks and Sam Fox that graced the 'Putting Our House In Order' EP last year!
The only other time I am aware of Hawkwind employing a female vocalist was at the Hawkestra gig when Samantha Fox (former topless model who supported the ultra conservative capitalist Rupert Murdoch during the Wapping strikes back in the late 80s) peformed Master of the Universe.

Lemmy is a truly great bass player, Nik Turner is a truly rotten sax (and flute) player - and Nik Turner got Lemmy thrown out the band!

yes. it's not really like a live album, anyway, consider it a giant collage of everything great that hawkwind did played by the band at their best, and it's like uh a total experience you know?

I've got an Orgone Accumulator
It makes me feel greater
I'll see you sometime later
When I'm through with my Accumulator

It's no social integrator
It's a one man isolator
It's a back brain stimulator
It's a cerebral vibrator

Those energy stimulators
Turn your eyeballs into crators
But an Orgone Accumulator
Is a superman creator

It's no social integrator
It's a one man isolator
It's a back brain stimulator
It's a cerebral vibrator

I've got an Orgone Accumulator
And it makes me feel grater
I'll see you sometime later
When I'm through with my Accumulator

definitely best live album ever. orgone accumulator is excellent, but master of the universe has been, is, and probably always will be my favorite.

Everyone seems to love Space Ritual, is it worth me checking out given that I generally don't like live albums much?

Also, before CD bonus tracks and all that jazz, Space Ritual was basically the only place to hear classic songs like Silver Machine (without seeking out the original single) and Orgone Accumulator.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:05 (eighteen years ago) link

but Silver Machine isn't on Space Ritual! (WHY by the way?)

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Silver Machine is on Choose Your Masques... CD certainly.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:10 (eighteen years ago) link

It's not?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:13 (eighteen years ago) link

nope, it's not. very odd, since that's what the SR concerts all built up to, right? the studio version's on the reissue of in search of space.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:14 (eighteen years ago) link

OK, never mind then. Orgone Accumulator wasn't on any studio albums though right?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, I know. I'm thinking of the BBC album that has a live version of Silver Machine.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:16 (eighteen years ago) link

On the reisuue CDs (which are great), "Silver Machine" is tacked on the end of "X in Search of Space" IIRC.

The single version was built up from the sketchy version on the the "Glastonbury Fayre" triple.

NB that there is one of those dodgy live comps out, w/the complete concert for one of the 2 gigs the made "Space Ritual" from. It has the bit cut out from "Masters of the Universe", which = the best cut on S.R. for me.

The missing bit from S.R. is the live version of "You Shouldn't do That" which was on the '70's "Roadhawks" comp. THIS CUT IS FUCKING AWESOME.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:21 (eighteen years ago) link

This album is never loud enough!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, that bonus track of You Shouldn't Do That is incredible.
Stasis: The UA Years collects all of the early singles and
has a side or so of Space Ritual tacked on at the end. There's also a really crappy live take of YSDT.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh man. Did this thread ever make my day!

I owned this years ago on disc because I got all crazy for Monster Magnet, and went back to the source. Then I got poor and sold tons of CDs, and Space Ritual was one of em.

And then one day, the pull was great. Space Ritual was beckoning me. I was dreaming about it. And thinking about it all the time. Then I bought it at Aquarius in SF and listened to it tons and tons and wondered how I could possibly get rid of a record so monolithic and time-travelled.

I'm going to listen to it tonight real loud.

yes. it's not really like a live album, anyway, consider it a giant collage of everything great that hawkwind did played by the band at their best, and it's like uh a total experience you know?

-- el sabor de gene

OTM. It doesn't even SOUND like a proper live album - all the songs are performed without interruption, linked by narration or electronic squiggles, so you don't even hear the audience till the very end. And there's no 10-minute drum solos or anything. Best live LP ever? - sure, why not?

As for the Dave Brock vs. George Clinton thing, Clinton wins easily - but Space Ritual still beats P-Funk Earth Tour (a pretty great live LP itself.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:36 (eighteen years ago) link

The only place I've been able to find "Silver Machine" on vinyl at least is on the "Roadhawks" LP comp, which is a dog's breakfast of various stuff, but hey it's got "Silver Machine" on it, the single version, or whatever is the most well known version.. so that makes up for it alone.

Otherwise, while i like Hawkwind (the first album), it's really not indicitave of FUCKIN' HAWKWIND as we know and love them, but it's worth investigating. I think Hall Of The Mountain Grill is great though. Robert Calvert's presence is usually a good sign with most Hawkwind releases. Robert Calvert's initial solo stuff is great too.. if for anything the Gremlin songs... "EYE FOOOOOOOKUSSSED ON THE MAHG-NIFYING GLAHSSSSS THAT BRAUUUGHT THE DOWNFALL OF IKKARRRUS!!!"

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Silver Machine is on Choose Your Masques... CD certainly.

that's the drum machine and synth remake. not the best.

'silver machine' wasn't on 'space ritual' because the band couldn't stand it. it was the record label that picked it from the outtakes as a single and got lemmy to re record the vocals. i saw hawkwind about a half dozen times in the early 80's and they NEVER played 'silver machine' live.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I think I've only ever seen them not play it once. Usually it would go something like this:

dave brock or nik turner: i suppose you want us to play bloody "silver machine" again, eh?

audience: nooooooo...! play something else

hawkwind: (launches into silver machine again)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Hawkwind, and I say that as Neu! fan, Neu's stylistic innovations notwithstanding. Hawkwind just outrocks them by a mile. Neu! is like a neat fixture in a museum, Hawkwind is a drug fueled odyssey into the deepest desert under a starry sky and wind on you face.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:44 (eighteen years ago) link

so er I guess I'd better flag this one as "nsfw", eh?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Quark, Strangeness, and Charm is their most underrated record, IMO.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:46 (eighteen years ago) link

you know, I don't really like "silver machine" much either - the chorus, um, sounds like Van Halen to me - which is not a bad thing AT ALL, but I don't think it sounds good in a Hawkwind song

plain ol' jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:43 (eighteen years ago) link

classic studio albums -

in search of space
doremi fasol latido
in the hall of the mountain grill
warrior on the edge of time
quark, strangeness and charm
astounding sounds, amazing music

bear in mind that those last two sound like a completely different band and many people don't rate 'astounding sounds...'. don't listen to them!

if you like 'quark...' and astounding sounds....'. also check pxr5 and the hawklords '25 years' which are also much maligned but much loved in my house.

anything post '79 is pretty iffy though 'leviation', 'sonic attack' and 'church of hawkwind' have their moments. after that, pretty much forget about it.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Doremi is probably the first one to get. The self-titled album is really good too in a looser more hippieish way. It's less about space though and more about BE YOURSELF.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:48 (eighteen years ago) link

There's a 3CD comp called "Epoch Eclipse" which if you're lucky you can find in Fopp for five quid. Admittedly, the third CD is a slippery slope of diminishing returns. But the first two have a lot of the top tunes from the studio albums Stirmonster lists, plus the "Silver Machine" and "Urban Guerilla" singles, the latter of which is a cracking powerpop ditty with Calvert on fine form, albeit probably not on the BBC playlist these days.

The original "Space Ritual" double is compiled from 2 gigs on the tour, one at Liverpool, one at Brixton. The "sundown vol 2" disc is the Brixton gig, complete and not overdubbed/mixed. It's interesting (rawer sound quality, you get the bit off the end of "Brainstorm") but not worth paying much $$ for. Be warned that this recording is available under multiple different titles.

A list of them here:

three months pass...

I shelled out for the new (Dutch) reissue of Space Ritual. The restored "Brainstorm" kicks much ass. Bonus "Orgone Accumulator" and "Time We Left this World Today." 2 encore takes of "You Shouldn't Do That." And a fucking PAL DVD audio version with videos for "Silver Machine" and "Urban Guerilla." I have no self-control.

i have held back from buying any HW knowing that if i got one album i would definitely need to get the complete set (of the UA era), so the boxset does the job perfectly.
these are new remasters, with the extra tracks/single edits etc that were on older editions are collected together on a seperate disc which is the best way to do it if you ask me.
so far i have heard HW and now onto Doremi.
needless to say, this is fucking insanely good.

Not 100% sure I need three double live sets (Greasy Truckers, Space Ritual and The 1999 Party) but what the hell. At that price it's impossible to go wrong.

Yeah you guys are probably right it's just I've been spinning it over and over while playing Dark Souls so I'll be rocking out for a solid 30-45 minutes and then "Sonic Attack" happens and suddenly what was once righteous droney space metal is a guy talking about "You will feel the need to vomit" and "There will be bleeing from orifices". Which I guess is probably appropriate for Dark Souls but whatevs.

And yes Hawkwind can do whatever the hell they want, obviously.
