i'm not wild about Coming on Strong, but "Over and Over" is the fucking shit and i bet the DFA produced album is great. their latest live shows were supposedly great

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Monday, 16 January 2006 05:47 (7 years ago) Permalink

This album is soooo bad... perhaps worse than The Eagles Of Death Metal.

Dom iNut (donut), Monday, 16 January 2006 06:34 (7 years ago) Permalink

the live show (back during cmj) was AWFUL, i left after 3 songs. a whole bunch of messy crap soul whining/cowbell banging singer wearing sunglasses/unattractive man wanking on some kind of microkorg-nord lead atrocity.

i can't think back to this experience without cringing.

bell labs (bell_labs), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:29 (7 years ago) Permalink

I thought they weren't bad live. It's when I checked out the album that i was unimpressed.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:18 (7 years ago) Permalink

the only track of theirs that I really like is "just like we (breakdown)" .... probably because it's sincere in its sappiness ... the joke factor of their other stuff turns me off.

Renard (Renard), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:54 (7 years ago) Permalink

Don't be mean to Hot Chip, you guys!

nancyboy (nancyboy), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 11:07 (7 years ago) Permalink

haha uh I like this a lot

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 11:15 (7 years ago) Permalink

"etc." = can't be wrong?

no, have a need for a breathy, "sincere" Ween. I have not yet tried the CD myself.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 11:18 (7 years ago) Permalink

I quite like Hot Chip. Over and Over was one of my favourite songs of the latter part of 2005.

klee (klee), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 12:27 (7 years ago) Permalink

what record are you all on about?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 12:48 (7 years ago) Permalink

hot chip, "coming on strong"

do you like it?

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 12:57 (7 years ago) Permalink

i've not heard it - has it been reissued? they were fkn great when i saw them live.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:17 (7 years ago) Permalink

DFA / Astralwerks just put it out in the U.S.

there's also the Over and Over / Just Like We single, which I guess is a preview of their second record

Renard (Renard), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:14 (7 years ago) Permalink

I have a Hot Chip cdr release from over 3 years ago. Can I sell it for hundreds of pounds?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:24 (7 years ago) Permalink

It's sad that Hot Chip gets full distribution, but Clor still can't get a U.S. deal with any label...(although maybe they've turned down offers from smaller U.S. labels as far as I know..)

Dom iNut (donut), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:26 (7 years ago) Permalink

it's all about the DFA remix of "Just Like We (Breakdown)" which no doubt should get x-posted to that sad techno thread.

imbidimts, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 19:25 (7 years ago) Permalink

Classic for getting the NME to embarrass themselves even more than usual by coining the term "slapcore."

"The Warning" has leaked </Orson>

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 05:30 (7 years ago) Permalink

i was surprised at some of the hatred for this group, but i haven't heard any of the older material. i figured this would be something the ILMassive would love. "Just like We (Breakdown)" & "No Fit State" are really standing out so far.

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 05:32 (7 years ago) Permalink

as i said before, "no fit state" is huge

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 05:58 (7 years ago) Permalink

where did it leak to? it's not on oink
and i'm excited

nervous (cochere), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:01 (7 years ago) Permalink

i figured cutty would like it.

is this gonna be on DFA?

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:03 (7 years ago) Permalink

meaning, aren't there some people that work for DFA on this board. i'm guilty of stealing, but i'd rather not be guilty of spreading

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:04 (7 years ago) Permalink

you can download the new album on slsk...been listening to it all day. i'm really digging Boy From School and Colours, though the whole album is pretty consistently good.

echodex (echodex), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:48 (7 years ago) Permalink

i'm really surprised that the original of "Just like We (Breakdown)" is more interesting than the DFA remix. looses all the rhythmic complexity.

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:51 (7 years ago) Permalink

The video for Over And Over makes me really not like them, though. the song definitely treads into the Beta Band/Ween territory. is this what all british people are like?

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 07:08 (7 years ago) Permalink

Great new album. Miles above Coming on Strong and I liked that one.

wmlynch (wlynch), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 07:42 (7 years ago) Permalink

the new remix 12 is brilliant, naum gabo and justus really doing great.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 23:52 (7 years ago) Permalink

I like the video of 'Over And Over', and the song itself is much better than the whole career of the Junior Boys.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 6 March 2006 10:38 (7 years ago) Permalink

... though the first Hot Chip album was more dud, than classic.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 6 March 2006 10:39 (7 years ago) Permalink

saw em this weekend at a live instore. was really impressed. they had all indie-nerd steretypes covered. Terry from Just One of the Guys, Alan Cumming, Napoleon Dynamite (i couldn't see the two other guys).

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:17 (7 years ago) Permalink

The guy on the right looks like Vinnie Jones!

jaxon referencing terry from just one of the guys just made my day.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:42 (7 years ago) Permalink

I'm starting to think that the only Hot Chip tracks that really do it for me are No Fit State, The DFA's remix of Just Like We (Break Down), and Over and Over. It seems like the more I listen to other tracks from The Warning and Coming On Strong the less I like them. I really enjoyed those tracks live, but at home they put me to sleep more or less. So aside from the big 3 mentioned above, I'm apathetic...but maybe time will tell.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:41 (7 years ago) Permalink

it's a classic conundrum - great live band, dud on record.

hearts, Thursday, 9 March 2006 00:01 (7 years ago) Permalink

chantilly, i know what you mean. while i was all gushing about their new 'un on the other thread, my enthusiasm for the record has steadily dwindled and now i often concede, letting my eager skip finger goes blang blauh several times.

its still way way fun and i can still feel it with my hands and my tongue but something seems a bit temporary about it all. (god, jaded about an album not even released for another 2 months - someone cut me up soon.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:31 (6 years ago) Permalink

mmm... anyone who hasn't seen them live or seen them earlier when they were a 3-piece, check that out...

they were fan-fuckingtastic at Sonar

I'm very puzzled by the "temporary" comments people seem to be making - of all the new artists 2000-onwards, these guys are one of the few that get constant replay - probably the album I've listened to most this year, never really outstays its welcome. if a better record comes out this year it'll be shock.

yeah definitely my favorite album of the year. i'm going to be at that seaport show too, duh, they rocked it when i saw them at cmj last year (before having heard any recorded output). plus since i'm reppin astralwerks for the summer its like a responsibility

i'll bump this thread on fri so kids can maybe pre/at-show meetup

"over and over" has some good moments, like the synth freakout (freakout maybe too strong a word, but it's cool), but then not too long after it they start singing again and it's like, if you're talking about repetition and making me think about the wonderous qualities thereof, i think i'd rather put on a house/techno/whatever dj mix where the music won't get interrupted every 4 or 5 minutes. i guess that's why i don't appreciate indietronica or whatever it's called

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 02:39 (6 years ago) Permalink

There are loads of nice touches throughout this - I'm all about the guitar solo and the disembodied girl's voice over the final track at the moment.

Also is the "I don't play no gabba" dude during Night And Day supposed to sound like Tricky?

Matt DC, Friday, 22 June 2012 09:00 (11 months ago) Permalink

amazed that this is gaining such traction - the production is improved in places but they're still as awful at ballads as ever and his voice is WORSE than ever. found it a real chore to listen to.

star-spangled david banner (lex pretend), Friday, 22 June 2012 09:04 (11 months ago) Permalink

Hah, I was thinking that a proper R&B singer could have made a hit out of 'Look At Where We Are'.

Matt DC, Friday, 22 June 2012 09:46 (11 months ago) Permalink

(I mean as a cover, not just singing over the same backing)

Matt DC, Friday, 22 June 2012 09:46 (11 months ago) Permalink

If an R&B singer who wasn't The Weeknd or Frank Ocean or Beyoncé covered it, it would be entirely ignored by the entire world.

star-spangled david banner (lex pretend), Friday, 22 June 2012 09:50 (11 months ago) Permalink

no way, ppl love that shit

remember when solange covered the dirty projectors

just sayin, Friday, 22 June 2012 10:05 (11 months ago) Permalink

I could imagine Brandy singing it. I agree it's a good song let down by his voice but when I had it on in the car my daughter, who ignored the rest of the album, said "I love this song. It's beautiful." So maybe the reedy slow jams are for the 5-year-old girl market.

― heiswagger (rennavate)

This is what he does. I was reading an old Robyn thread the other day and every other post was him telling everyone how much he can't stand her. This was going back to 2005 and five years later he's posting the same old shit, I can't believe he doesn't get bored of it.

Finally got to see them in Minnesota last week. They were great but the set seemed so short. Looking at the other recent setlists it seems they had to cut Hand Me Down Your Love and Let Me Be Him. Pretty gutted they didn't do Motion Sickness either as that has become my favourite on the new album.

Just saw the other day Look at Where we are is the next single. It's a great song but surely Don't Deny Your Heart is the obvious hit on the album?

Kitchen Person, Friday, 20 July 2012 19:04 (11 months ago) Permalink

they were great at pitchfork, i thought

the new songs sounded really good but they haven't really stretched them out or messed around w/ them like the older songs.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 21 July 2012 04:35 (10 months ago) Permalink

SO AMAZING. Chromatics were way better live than on record (and I love them already), and Hot Chip deserved everything I've heard about their live show. They did a Fleetwood Mac cover, they dropped Prince's "If I Was Your Girlfriend" into "Look At Where We Are," and made some tweaks to "Night and Day" that I really wish had made it onto the album- generally streamlining it, also adding this kind of...rattling/scratching sound (like Dennis Bovell's matchbox on "Newtown") and an ooo-weeee-ooooooo theremin-sounding synth line on the chorus.

muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Sunday, 22 July 2012 04:04 (10 months ago) Permalink

So "Let Me Be Him" is the best thing ever, amirite?

heiswagger (rennavate), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 19:10 (10 months ago) Permalink

Let Me Be Him is indeed excellent but think I would put Motion Sickness, Don't Deny Your Heart and Flutes ahead of it.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 20:00 (10 months ago) Permalink

3 months pass...

So they've finally put out the obvious single from the new album. The video is quite brilliant and very bizarre.
