there is not a single role she has played that would not have been better served by Close, Huston, Bening or Keaton.

streep, but more for the shit she stars in than her acting

Streep is good in Silkwood and funny in Manhattan and Postcards from the Edge
― Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:31 (sixteen years ago) link
Sarandon for real. And voting Annette Bening is indeed crazy.
― wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:32 (sixteen years ago) link
all these ladies are great to defensible-at-least. go ladies!
even front runners roberts, moore & zellweger have done plenty of good stuff. i guess i'd vote zellweger because she's done the least good. moore seems the most irritating to me for murky and irrational reasons but she was maude lebowski so no vote there. vagina. julia roberts also highly aggravating and deserves place in hell for 'pretty woman' but erin brokovich was all right.
― gff, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:36 (sixteen years ago) link
Holly Hunter is so great!

― Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:45 (sixteen years ago) link
Angelica Huston is wonderful, anybody who sez otherwise is stupid.
I used to like Laura Linney, but I am getting tired of her now
Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Sigourney Weaver are unimpeachably rad.
― remy bean, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:46 (sixteen years ago) link
Young Laura Linney = FIT.
― chap, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago) link
Winslet-Little Children, Eternal Sunshine..., Iris, Titanic, and Sense & Sensibility.
― C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah, the movies mostly suck... but she was pretty excellent in all of them, i think.
― remy bean, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago) link
I only wish we could get some of those screwball actresses involved here. I'd vote the shit out of them.
― Eric H., Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:51 (sixteen years ago) link
My first roommate in Chicago, whom I met through the classifieds, was apparently acquaintances with Laura Linney at Brown in the early 1980s. They met in a sign-language class.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:53 (sixteen years ago) link
if we remove the "before 1980" tag the answer would be Greer Garson or Joan Crawford.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:54 (sixteen years ago) link
xp: uh, at least 3 of those Winslet movies do not suck.
Eric prefers Judi Dench to Irene Dunne, which shows what listening to too much !!! will do to ya.
Alfred's fag card under suspension.
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I was really expecting to vote Julia Roberts, but Zellweger sucks so much that now I have to consider all my options.
― John Justen, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:05 (sixteen years ago) link
Ooh, Zellweger is kinda meh but compared to Julia Roberts she's wonderful. Julia could make CW actresses look fantastic.
― Nicole, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:08 (sixteen years ago) link
Julia Roberts is awful. I think Diane Keaton sucks really bad. Irvin Welsh uses the name "Judi Dench" as a synonym for farting in his books which I think is appropriate.

my roommate on annette bening: "the poor man's diane keaton"
― impudent harlot, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:19 (sixteen years ago) link
i'd go with roberts. streep in devil wears prada was a worthy nomination even tho i kind of can't stand her either
again, Bening's best perf not nominated:
Mars Attacks!
(is yr roomie calling Warren Beatty a poor man?)
You ppl are mad re Streep, her skills are slammin', only the movies suck.
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:21 (sixteen years ago) link
the only thing i've seen her where she actively annoyed me was running with scissors
― impudent harlot, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:24 (sixteen years ago) link
her IN
I'm with Kael -- too often she creates an excellent impersonation of a human being (exceptions: A Cry in the Dark, Madison County, Adaptation, Prada).
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:27 (sixteen years ago) link
Julia Roberts, rack notwithstanding. Zellweger close second...and I have no idea who I would give the bronze medal of shittiness to.
Winslet, Frances McDormand, Holly Hunter and Helen Mirren are all untouchable here.
― B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:38 (sixteen years ago) link
I feel Winslet's being a tad overrated here. She's got talent, but not the presense or charisma of a true great.
She was fantastic in Extras, though.
― chap, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:42 (sixteen years ago) link
I instantly thought "Julia Roberts" before I even opened the thread. Seeing the JR hate on display has warmed my heart.
― Bodrick III, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:45 (sixteen years ago) link
hating Julia Roberts is so boring though. Pick a beter target -- like, say, Joan Allen.

Facts is facts.
― Bodrick III, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:47 (sixteen years ago) link
i place julia roberts firmly in the sandra bullock/keanu reeves shitpool, but somehow i think that zellweger is worse, mostly because who wound even consider giving her an oscar in the first place.
― John Justen, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:47 (sixteen years ago) link
I'm with Kael -- too often she creates an excellent impersonation of a human being
Right. This is a common problem among British actors, less so among American actors.
― Tom D., Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:29 (sixteen years ago) link
Emma Thompson's emerged from this completely unscathed, you'd think someone would be gunning for her (not me, I don't have much of an opinion either way).
― chap, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:30 (sixteen years ago) link
Anyway, I think her best work was probably made back in the early '80s, so maybe she's just the wrong age for this board.
Otm. She's been good in several films, mostly from the 80's, but I get the impression that now she's just cashing in, which is fine by me.
― Michael White, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:33 (sixteen years ago) link
Pauline Kael is dead, and so is that initial phase of Streep's career. Not that I'm defending her doing Mamma Mia.
Streep is a riot in Manchurian Demmedate if you just forget about the first version.
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:35 (sixteen years ago) link
^^^^^^^^^^ truth
I think she was the best part of okay in The Hours - over pretty strong competition from Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman. Toni Collette was the only good thing about that movie and she was only on screen for about 15 minutes.
fixed

I would have said Julia Roberts before I opened the thread, but who knew that Renee Zellweger had ever been nominated? dogshit.
Lots other overrated (or just bad) actresses there .. in fact, most of them.

compared to whom? It's not like the Academy is going to be naming Emanuelle Beart, Sylvie Testud and Gong Li every year.

― omar little, Thursday, 31 January 2008 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link
Hey, this is a board that listed 1980 as the cut-off date.
We totally disagree – she's improved, warmed, whatever. She's insufferable in The French Lieutenant's Woman, Sophie's Choice and In the Still of the Night.

― horseshoe, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:54 (sixteen years ago) link
Laura Linney is massively overrated but I don't hate her. Actually I don't hate most of the actresses on this list but I hate some of the movies they were in with a fiery passion.
― HI DERE, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:55 (sixteen years ago) link
(For example, I love Nicole Kidman to death but MY GOD "THE HOURS" WAS A GIGANTIC PILE OF HORSESHIT)
Actually the only one I really hate is Julianne Moore.

even if Linney never made a good movie ever again, I would have to love her because of You Can Count on Me.
