Brown Owl at our Brownies was horrible and she wasn't even brown, more of a pasty white with purple rings on her legs.

estela (estela), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 07:12 (eighteen years ago) link

you can probably also make them from silvery thread and pins knocked into a bit of wood painted black

we have an owl who hangs out near our house, twit-twooing. he rocks.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Apparently, according to birds-of-prey experts, owls are quite stupid birds and their reputation for being wise is a fallacy. Harris Hawks however are supposed to be v intelligent.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:17 (eighteen years ago) link

they look intelligent, and sometimes that's enough.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:18 (eighteen years ago) link

True, true.

i just posted my kitty's picture because she looks like a great-horned owl. especially when she's comfy and has her neck scrunched up and her ears pricked.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:40 (eighteen years ago) link

also her eyes are owl-like!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:40 (eighteen years ago) link

My mom has a cat that has a big round head that's a bit on the big side and enormous perfectly round eyes. He looks quite like an owl. Not as much like an owl as Josh & Liberty's cat, though. It too has a very round head with perfectly round eyes.

does anyone have an owl that looks like a cat? whiskers, that sort of thing

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:02 (eighteen years ago) link

What about a cat that looks like a cat?

BarabadabaDadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:03 (eighteen years ago) link

My cat looks like a cat. He eats fortune cookies.

One late night a friend and myself were wandering across a very foggy golf course. As we approached the hedge border a white 'thing' rose up from the ground and took off at head height across the nearby road. The shock knocked us both to the ground mainly because we didn't at the time know what had happened. It was only after a couple of days did we find out that a white barn owl lived in the area.

So my answer to the question is:
They are creepy fuckers when you stumble across them eating something on the ground at night, in thick fog.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I have found the winning owl.

Teh cuet:

A group of orphaned baby owls are being taken under the wing of a new mother - which happens to be a cuddly toy.

The toy is being used at the New Forest Otter, Owl and Wildlife Park to give four tawny owls a surrogate family.

The quartet all cuddle under the wings of the stuffed toy, which has been mother to another two orphans who have since been moved on to an outside pen.

Owls kick ass. Snowy barn owls have appeared at my life (while driving, flying at my car) before two very life-changing occasions, so they strike me of PORTENT although I am not superstitious about them.

I guess Hitchcock was going to include a scene with an owl in THE BIRDS but it just ended up being to comical, so he cut it.

Abbott, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:27 (sixteen years ago) link

in UFO/abduction literature barn owls are often the subject of "screen memories" which are said to mask an alien abduction.

There was a pretty big owl sitting on an aerial opposite the post office in my village. Just chilling and enjoying the daytime hubbub.

I guess South West Texas is owl country, because every night they start their cooing that goes on all night, not just one or two, but it's numerous and endless. Tonight they are in the trees outside our window and it's driving me crazy! Owls are not cool.

JacobSanders, Friday, 13 December 2013 07:40 (ten years ago) link

It's not just one cooing sound or whatever you call these owl sounds, it's different tones and inflections, high and low, long and short and it's goes on and on all night from owl to owl and so on. Even the high school football team is called the Owls.

JacobSanders, Friday, 13 December 2013 07:45 (ten years ago) link

You should've asked your real estate agent if you were moving into an owl neighborhood.
