I was in a friends' basement getting high.

I went to meet some friends, but I couldn't find them - as everywhere was so packed . I walked around a bit. I went home. I think I was on a train when y2k started.

I was too drunk anyway, Stence - I'd have made out with you and never remembered it.

oh, you'd remember it.

I think Ned, sometimes-poster Stripey, and I got together at our place and made some dishes, ate, had some drink, and just hung out... the anti-celebration/anti-panic if you will.

Yup, pretty much. Watched MST3K's Hamlet as well.

Thinking about 20 years ago - clover 'neath bare feet, ponies, the twinkling eyes of the towheaded child = endearing

Remembering five years ago = depressing

And seeing old newscasts from the 90's (when they talk about the Oakland fires, for instance) and the lame hairstyles and clothes is really depressing. The 90's sucked.

andy ---, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 16:59 (nineteen years ago) link

The 90s were fine. So was five years ago.

after staying up all night the night before while driving to s. carolina (well, riding there. didn't wanna snooze cause too afraid drive would follow suit), took ecstasy, sat on beach with bunch of other people and watched fireworks. didn't kiss anyone, cause kissing is like totally icky.

I ate a gourmet dinner (caviar included) prepared by a chef-in-training friend of mine, followed by a massive blunt and many, many drinks. I ended up falling asleep in my housemate's chair after failing at my attempts to:
a.)Seduce a girl I knew who had crashed the party
b.)Drag a couch off the porch to burn in the vacant lot across the street.

It wasn't the worse of my life, but the New Years party I went to was excruciatingly lame. The guy who put the party together was for some reason convinced that Kenny Loggins' "Footloose" was *the* millenium party song, and played it three times. I didn't know whether to sigh and be sad for him, or throttle him.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Ate crab, drank champagne... just like every New Year's. Also wondered why the millenium was starting a year early.

Kenan, I trust you went for the throttling...as a purely humane gesture of course.

i was sober as always and watched fireworks from alamo square park and played with some dogs. BORING like all new years of mine since I cleaned myself up.

I was doing guard duty in the barracks with my partner, I forgot his name, watching over 50+ trainees who were sound asleep. Shifts were two hours long, 4 shifts a night, I made sure I got signed up for the midnight one. A few guys told me to make sure and wake them up for it, even though there was no ball dropping, no TV, no lights but our flashlights, and no sound but whispers, just two guys in uniform and a few others in briefs and brown t-shirts, chilly, watching a clock manufactured by the blind tick past midnight, wondering if shit was going to go down or if anybody would bother to tell us if it did.

The next morning we were all up at 0530 per usual, as I recall.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, so NOBODY here saved up some lentils and gatorade and bandaids and shit? I'm sure there was at least on bock-bock-chicken that was storing mormon goods, securing the perimeter, and monitoring CNN. CONFESS.

andy --, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

I didn't do shit. But remember the Nike ad they ran on, like, January 1, with the guy running along happily while planes fell out of the sky and missiles launched? That was an awesome ad.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:46 (nineteen years ago) link

My dad was camping, listening for signs of doom on his transistor radio, probably expecting to be referring to the overhang he was holed up in as "home" for the forseeable future.

I vaguely remember thinking how funny it would be if the 80,000+ people at that big Phish show in Florida were about to become the last vestiges of the human race.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:55 (nineteen years ago) link

"... listening for signs of doom on his transistor radio..."

Now that's what I'm talking about. "Earth Abides" sort of shit, one last survivor forging a new world from the ashes of the old, boldy establishing a new order like THE POSTMAN.

andy --, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 18:01 (nineteen years ago) link

I think he was a little disappointed in/worried for me, you know, not acknowledging the impending end times. I think he was kinda looking forward to the guerilla Appalachian post-apocalyptic Swiss Family Robinson future where we raised the younguns as hunters and fisherman and lived in houses we built in the trees and created our own new tribal society.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

is that charlton heston on the cover?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Kelsey and I were at my parents' house. We just watched TV. I flipped through the Rolling Stone issue with Christina Ricci on the cover. One of the boringest New Years I've had in the last ten years, to be honest. We went to the White Hen in the morning so that Kelsey could buy a newspaper for her mom, as a collector's item.

Actually, a small part of me wanted there to be a catastrophe if it meant that I didn't have to finish my senior thesis, which I was in the grueling middle of.

Nick - like your father I look forward to the earnest world of the post-apocalypse as well - bartering, making mocassins, growing corn for fuel, etc. Maybe if we attack North Korea we'll get our wish.

Neither sleet nor hail will prevent Kevin Costner from getting out the mail. Has anyone seen both Waterworld and The Postman? (I've seen neither)Please compare/contrast. He was on a real post-apocalyptic mission there for awhile.

I also remember really liking the Simpsons' take on the whole thing, what with Dick Clark being a robot and disintegrating and such.

About the only preparation done besides stocking up on booze was my dad informing me which guns were in the best working order in our house. The fucker even laid claim to the 9mm.

I had a big party at my house, and because all my friends had faffed around so much, no one had plans, so they all came over. We dragged mattresses out to the back courtyard and lay around by candlelight, all trashed off our noggins, some people inside watching (and yelling abuse at) the Matrix on dvd, my ex bf turned up, tripping his balls off, and fell face-first into my lap passed out.

Yeah it was pretty good. I narrowly avoided pulling a graveyard shift at the ISP I worked for. We had people on shift assuming everyone's pooters/routers/networks would fall over. And of course nothing happened. So I'm glad I didnt bother with that.

To be honest, it would be quite interesting to look back on your attitudes to these weird arbitrary things, I think.

emil.y, Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I've gone back and forth about it. I just know that there is no way I would have filled this out sincerely because that is just WAY too much info about my personal thoughts to share with anyone. But to read the thoughts of someone who was less guarded/self-conscious about sharing the answers? I'm going to keep my eye out for these in thrift stores from now on.

Romantic (and a little bit of platonic) relationships, with dual focus on fantasy (traits of your ideal mate - woman, etc) and history (what's the furthest you have traveled to see a love interest?)
Also, pursuit/being pursued.
